But maybe, that wouldn't actually be that bad, Grosjean is much better now. He made a really good overtake around the outside on Giovinazzi in the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, and his early DNF in the 2019 Russian Grand Prix, in my opinion, was only partly his fault, as I think it's the fault of all three who were involved in the early crash (Grosjean, Giovinazzi and Ricciardo (“I was like, sandwich between two cars!”)).

@UCYBd38zyNQ8ZGEducSMK52Q Or on a lesser scale, Austria 2000. After a dominant McLaren 1-2 (yep, McLaren again), the stewards found the gearbox seal on Mika Häkkinen's winning car was broken. This was a clear breach of technical regulations, but there was zero evidence the broken seal had resulted in any performance advantage. In the end, Häkkinen kept his 10 Drivers' championship points, while McLaren lost the 10 points in the Constructors'.

Drivers are part of a team, if they screw up, the team suffers. If the team screws up, the driver suffers. Imagine a football referee saying, "I won't give a penalty because it would be unfair to punish 10 players for one players mistake." You win as a team, you lose as a team.
@bigsav1984
@bigsav1984 4 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Stummer couldn’t have said it better myself, part of winning is getting the right people around you. Mercedes wouldn’t win anything with couple of crappy pay drivers and Hamilton wouldn’t be a 5 times champ driving a McLaren
@gautambose5200
@gautambose5200 4 жыл бұрын
Yes 100%. While I do find the concept of all the drivers rotating teams interesting, I do agree that one of the things that makes F1 great is the fact that the teams are still very much sporting teams even though they have all the workings of a corporation (HR, Legal, Business, R&D, etc.). Win as a team, lose as a team. The punishments are actually brilliant given that they affect both driver and team. Even a 10K fine for a team -> that's 10k less resources you get spent on on the things that make your car fast.
@dillonkian559
@dillonkian559 4 жыл бұрын
yes agree for what is a team without a team?
@alazrabed
@alazrabed 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the reciprocal commitment of drivers and teams is interesting and here to stay in F1. But this doesn't mean it's a principle that has to be immutable, no matter the discipline, until the end of times. If you take football and allow players to touch the ball with their hands, you end up with another discipline, involving a different complex of abilities and depending on a different mapping of strategies. It's not necessarily better or worse, it's just different. The concept of a team can be malleable to achieve a similar exploration. In some settings of some Real Time Strategy games, players can change what the teams are as the game progresses - allowing for different strategies to unfold. Exploration is good - at least as much as exploitation.
@y_fam_goeglyd
@y_fam_goeglyd 4 жыл бұрын
But there are many examples of a team getting punished for its actions during a race (let's forget any "this went on all season, how couldn't the driver have known?" scenarios) without the driver being affected. I give you Singapore and "Crashgate" as a prime example. Alonso kept his win and the points, but the team were punished (plus all the extra stuff that happened later. I'm more concerned about race day and the immediate aftermath, rather than months down the line). That's not even close to being a lone action, many other times teams have been punished but the drivers haven't. Though it rarely works the other way around. Race day punishments for drivers _usually_ affect the team negatively too.

I would love to see a racing series where drivers rotated through all the cars. You could have a driver's championship that didn't depend on who had the best car and a constructor's championship that didn't depend on who had the best drivers. The problem is it creates a tension between the driver and constructor when one of them does something wrong. Some of the ideas in this video might help with that.

For the team penalties instead of having a point system like you suggested could you not have a % system so for a minor rule break maybe have 10% and for a major 50% making it more fair. So if Mercedes has 400 points and they to something major and lose 50% they will lose 200 points. But if Williams have 10 points and break something major and lose 50% they will only lose 5 points. Then they both lose a massive chunk of their points but it’s dependent on how many they already have which I think would be more fair. Please not that I used 50% to get my point across and if the FIA had a system like this it would probably not be as high as 50%.

10:28 That is so ridiculous and awesome at the same time. I actually wish they tried this for a season. Also most drivers might just troll in the HAAS cars :D As for penalizing constructors. Give 1-5% for each infraction depending on severity and remove this value (rounded up) from the total score at the end of the season. A 1% penalty would mean -6/-7 points for Mercedes and for Williams... they would still have to hand in their point ;)

lol. I think this is the first video I have ever liked on youtube. You've set a high bar, Chain Bear. TBH, I think the point splitting and point penalty depending on finishing place makes a lot of sense for both the team and driver infractions.

@@lopez.jacinto.6726 What does cheering for Alonso have anything to do with this? And 'us', I think you mean 'me'; what, you have a cult behind your computer chair? I'm also not a mind reader so what's with the sarcasm with your 10 years of following f1? You could have watched f1 for 50 years it doesn't make your statement any less retarded and there's nothing else to explain on the topic. There's 2 championships, that there is the reason for penalizing drivers/teams separately. "But aren't drivers part of the team?" should never be said from someone who's watched f1 over a decade and if you understood my obvious statement (judging from your sarcasm) you wouldn't have made your OP statement to begin with.
