T1 and T2 - Pangkor Laut T4 - Langkawi T5 - Genting T7 and T8 - KLIA T9 - Berjaya Tioman T11 - Kenyir Lake T13 and T14 - Sunway Lagoon Even the 2 straights have names too, the Kuala Lumpur straight (main straight) and Pahang straight (back straight). I started watching F1 races in part because I'd heard of Eau Rouge and the mystique and challenge of that corner. When I saw that the next race was at Spa, I remembered that was where "that cool Eau Rouge" corner is, and tuned in. There is also a slight diference between the names that FIA F1 (and other motorsport branches) give to the circuit and the names that the circuit officials gives itself. I live not to far of the circuit and have been there many times. At some places around the track there is a circuit map/guide panel. On that panel some names are not the same as they give it in Formula 1. An example is turn 12. In most of the Racing competitions (FIA F1, Blancpain GT) they call it 'Pouhon' while on the track itself it is called 'Double Gauche' that means 'Double left' in French. Like this, the circuit officials don't recognize turn 11 as the Jacky Ickx corner because that is already a coner name at the other circuit 'Zolder' in Belgium.

In Interlagos (as in most brazilian tracks), each turn has a name with a real meaning to it, each attributed in the good old days (mostly 40s and 50s): Curva do Sol (Sun Turn): When drivers approached it (in the old layout, not happening anymore), the sunlight would affect drivers vision. Curva da Ferradura (Horseshoe Turn): Self explanatory, just look at the shape of the turn. Curva do Pinheirinho (Little Pinetree Turn): There were a pinetree after the turn, where drivers used to collide with. Curva da Junção (Joint Turn): Where the oval and mixed track layout merges. Curva do Café (Coffee Turn): Has this name because in the early days, commentators and journalists would prepare coffee in a shack over there. The smell of the drink was so strong that drivers could smell from far. Subida do Lago (Lake Climb): Has it name because there is a - guess it? - lake after the turn. In the old layout, it was Descida do Lago (Lake Descent), since it was backward at this point. BONUS: The track is called Interlagos, the name of the neighborhood where it's located, and it means "betweek lakes". The track is located between two dam reservoirs and not actual lakes.

Theres a local track near me that has immediately named their corners when they opened, and theyre great names and known throughout California. Could someone just make a website where the F1 community could suggest names for the corners? I know that would certainly descend into "Corner McCornerface" territory and almost certainly worse areas, but I think there's a project for someone to mastermind the mass naming of corners at Tilkedromes. Maybe it's a public vote, maybe the community bring suggestions to a panel of F1 experts, like yourself, who then make a final decision, or draw up a shortlist which then gets voted on. Let's just do it unofficially if F1/circuits themselves won't do it.
@Quintinohthree
@Quintinohthree 4 жыл бұрын
Ideally corner names are relevant to the circuit locally though, referring to local features, people or what have you. It would be a shame if this was taken over by people from all over the world who frankly have no clue what goes on in many places. Suggestions are fine, if only to provide a reason to bring out real names better than what fans come up with.
@angelrobles7201
@angelrobles7201 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed with Quintinohthree. Think on Interlagos. Corners like Laranjinha, Ferradura, Bico do Pato, Junçao or Arquibancadas may have no meaning for non-Brazilians, but they do have a meaning for them. _Laranjinha_ had once an _orange tree_ , _Ferradura_ was once _horseshoe_-shaped (before the re-layout), _Bico do Pato_ is _duckbill_-shaped, _Junçao_ is were the new layout and the old layout _join_ , and _Arquibancadas_ was once the only place with _bleachers_

One of the questions I'd have about this is, how much of it is due to these tracks being newer? Is it not possible that, over time, we start attributing nicknames to turns that then become their names, much in the way Singapore Sling got its one, or the Wall of Champions? Is it possible that corners will once again be named once the newer tracks start gaining a bit of history themselves?
@snatermans
@snatermans 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I love the corner names. -- I was hoping for Zandvoort to pop by, since its on the calendar next year and has some history. It also has some commercially named corners (Audi S, Renaultbocht, Marlborobocht) and was interested to hear about that. (I'm not sure if other cuircuits have that, but it wasn't mentioned) corners named after people (both historical and Disney characters) and places. it even has a cornername a bit like 'revkiller' of 'Gforce extreme', namely: "Scheivlak", which litarally means 'seperator plain'; seperating the boys from the men (at least in my mind) :). This corner even has its own website: www.scheivlak.nl/

This is a really good argument. I’ve gotten so use to the teams referencing turn numbers that I never noticed. It would be a great thing for viewer reference as you say, plus it gives the opportunity to create history. “Remember that overtake at (whatever) that won him the championship?”, for example. It was a tradition that has gotten lost on the newer tracks definitely.

There are some informal names for parts of the track at Bahrain. University straight between T3/T4 (not many people call it that yet, but a few do because the stands there are the University stands... because the University is across the street behind the stands, naturally), the "esses" for T5/6/7, and the Oasis Straight for the backstraight from T10/T11 (again, as the stand there is the "Oasis Stand"). However, my favorite corner name is actually from the "Inner" Circuit (backstraight becomes the main straight and GP T11 is the first corner; the track leaves the GP layout from GP Turn 12 and reconnects at GP Turn 5). Where the separate part of the Inner Circuit rejoins the GP layout at GP Turn 5, that hairpin is referred to as "Patience," because it is a very tight and long hairpin to get you back onto the Esses, and it has such a late apex that nearly everyone tends to apex too early. So, to apex it properly and setup for the Esses, you need to remember to have "patience". 😁
