How do you treat hot spots on your dog?
Canine hot spots, also known as pyotraumatic dermatitis or acute moist dermatitis, are red, inflamed skin lesions that appear quickly, ooze, and may contain pus. Hot spots can be found anywhere on a dog’s body, but the most common sites are the head, legs, and hips. These painful, itchy, smelly sores may be very obvious or may be hidden beneath matted fur.

I've have rough collies and I had two dogs that would get hot spots every year in the spring and summer if they played in the pond or the creek. Collies do not have a oily-water proof coat once the undercoat layer is soaked . My grandma taught me how to treat hotspots, which are caused by the SAME anaerobic bacteria that causes cradle cap in babies. this is caused by run away bacterial on moist skin. SInce I have show collies, shaving the area is NOT an option. Instead, soak the area with baby oil with vitamin E in it making sure to go outside the margins about 1/2 an inch. Keep baby oil on it until it scabs up with yellow crusty scab and then try to lift the edges of the scab and keep dosing it in baby oil until the scab completely lifts. Typically this takes about 3-5 days and then it's gone and the hair will come back immediately. If they get a secondary infection from scratching it open, then you need to get some antibiotics. The baby oil smuthers the anaerobic bacteria (It needs air) and kills it in about 24-36 hrs. Shaving and vet treatments always made my dogs worse! Even dogs with traditionally "oily" coated breeds like Newfs and Labs can get them if that oil layer is broken. Adding oil back to the skin stops it in its tracks.

Two Bernese Mountain dogs (brothers from the same litter), first dog’s I’ve ever had (they’re numbers 7 & 8 of 9) got hot spots last winter after rough housing with Berner #9. Small punctures that were easy to access for licking. Not able to get to the vet (happened on a Friday evening), but not worth going to the emergency vet, I asked my dad if first aid spray with lidocaine would be okay to help treat. He (has a degree in pharmacology/toxicology) said that would actually work really well because 1) the lidocaine tastes really bad and will discourage licking, 2) the lidocaine will numb it making them less likely to want to lick it, and 3) it will help it to heal. I did double check with my vet later and she thought it was a really good idea too.

Goldens (6) and I work in a clinic. As soon as I see them I shave the spot to expose it to air. You clip until you get healthy skin on edges. Do not push anything that can make it stay moist like neosporin. If I don’t have a powder from work I have back equine wound repair from Amazon in the fridge.

Yes, a collie. We lived at the beach and took her in the salt water. Seemed to help. She and I moved to the mountains and she was perfectly fine. I went back to school at home at the beach and she retired in Tahoe because the hot spots were so bad at the beach. I couldn't do it to her. The family always thought it was sand fleas.

Black field lab, hot spot turned out to be allergic reaction to certain grain in kibble. Diet is highly varied with meats, fish, eggs, fruits and veggies with the wholistic vet recommend kibble as the only common denominator. He was treated with surface antibiotics etc per vet instructions but hot spots didn’t clear up until the dietary change-almost like magic!

Yes, I agree, I have goldendoodles and it seems to be dietary. They seem to have touchy stomachs as juveniles. It wasn't from grooming. Fed my dog chicken, hard boiled eggs, and potatoes. Put a cone on them so they couldn't get at it after cleaning. It took time to calm down. Both dogs had multiple spots. I now feed my dogs prescription kibble, but mostly real food, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, they get whatever is appropriate that we are eating.

Harry, my yellow lab, had hotspots from a young age. It got so bad that it was losing hair and at one point lost half the hair on his tail and could no longer wear a collar. After trying everything - cytopoint, apoquel, topical treatments, I had him tested for allergies both food and environmental . Turns out he was, in varying degrees, allergic to everything except about 10 things. The course of treatment was several months of steroids and a hypoallergenic food. The steroids caused him to gain 10 lbs- so it was hypoallergenic/ weight management food. Concerned about the side effects of the steroids, I tried apoquel again and it worked. He’s 8 now and doing well. My advice, if you are still not getting results after trying all the suggestions, get the allergy testing done and use the guidance of a specialist. Luckily I have pet insurance.

Following. I have had two golden retrievers in doors and they got them every year starting around age 3. Huge ones. I normally go to the vet and they get antibiotics, steroids, and spray. I would love a home remedy. They don’t swim. My lab has not gotten one and he is black. He does however have a very itchy spot under his chin that he rubs constantly and now hair is rubbed off. It seems like an allergy. We have used cytopoint injections as well. Open to suggestions. We also have to use the cone of shame to keep from licking the spots. Mine have gotten them on the face as well. And ear infections which are yeasty

Golden retriever here with severe allergies and reoccurring infections- unfortunately for my pup if she gets a hot spot the area needs to be saved so no fur can get into it, and it can have access to air. She also needs veterinary medicated wash/shampoo to help repair the skin barrier and prevent/treat infection. Sometimes you need more than over the counter products, but sometimes OTC products can help some dogs!! Keep this in mind for severely allergic pups who get reoccurring infections, always talk to your vet, and I wish you well❤️

I have had Golden Retrievers for years and they can suffer with hot spots. On Goldens I find its more prominent on the lighter colour dogs. Normally they will appear after a swim or getting wet. Make sure you dry them thoroughly afterwards. If they get hotspots make sure the area is kept cean & dry and dont put anything on it. If its a larger hot spot the shave around the area and keep it dry and stop the dog licking it. There is no magical cure, just keep is clean and dry.

Yep, Castor oil, Bag balm, baby oil all will take care of it immediately because it smuthers the bacteria. Shaving the spot to get air to it will eventually "Dry" it out, but takes a LOT LOT longer. Oil will take care of it without shaving and do a much faster (As long as there is no secondary infection).

Rescue Remedy, bit expensive, but they leave it alone, and it works great. Before that would sometimes use Desatin which helps dry it out. One Dobe licked his feet until we got rid of the kibble. One dog has a chicken allergy, other Dobe can't have rosemary of any kind - linked to seizures (check the shampoo ingredients too). Now I cook for the 3 dogs as every 3 weeks, like clockwork, one Dobe would get squirt diarrhea that not even rice water would touch. Endosorb tablets - 1 for a 100lb Dobe - no more diarrhea. Dr Cam, Dr Judy for recipes. Hope that helps.

I had a Cocker Spaniel/American Eskimo mix boy that would get hot spots quite often. Usually during spring and summer. I had an oatmeal spray the vet gave me that helped suthe and clear it up. Took a few days but it would eventually scab over and heal up after a few weeks. Key was keeping him from bothering it the first few days. I also noticed they showed up more often when i would get him shaved down close at the groomers. I changed how short they went and the hot spots were less frequent.

10 month old lab mix doing great until 2 weeks ago when the heat and humidity hit here in the southern US. Shaved the areas (back leg and under the tail), used a wound cleaner and antibiotic cream. Tail area got worse so took to vet and he received oral antibiotics and 2 weeks apoquel (very expensive drug). One week out and he is doing excellent. I hope this continues after meds are finished, if not I may go to a monthly allergy shot. Interestingly, his full sister has absolutely no problems - so far.

1st GSD as she got older, had them every August (NH) on her rump. Clipped the hair and cleaned around the area, and generally exposure to air would heal them right up, otherwise, I'd dab some Blu-Kote (always had it in the tack box) to help it dry out. Several GSDs since, haven't had issues with any of them.

I shave the area (honestly the most important part) and use GenOne spray once (recommended by my Vet). After that, let it heal and it goes away on its own. Some dogs will try to keep it open by licking and chewing the area, so I’ve found a cone or donut to be extremely helpful. (No t-shirts because it *needs* air to heal)

No flea diet on the or ticks - I have my hands all over them every single day. As a former vet tech, I went for the chlorhexidine right away. Found some wipes and a spray locally.
