This is great for us hobby farmers. When the "big boys" come to hay my little field, I like to know what's going on even if I'm not in the driver's seat. I have a lot of respect for people who make good hay. There is so much to it.

That beats the heck out of the old side mowers that just cut the grass, then had to rake, different implement, then bail, another one, then hand load the bails on a flat bed truck. Of course, that was 50 years ago. :)

I just found your channel, as an old time farm boy who is getting back into raising animals, I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work, you are matching your implements to your tractor and your needs. The haybine is a good piece of equipment, by rolling the hay you are reducing the need to tedder your crop. Thanks for sharing!

I grew up riding one! We have just sold the Thrashing Machine to a neighbour! Now have an IH Combine that pulls behind the tractor - the only problem with it is that the pigweed grows up through the ripe grain just as you are about to harvest it - the binder was the best, inasmuch as the sheaves would sit for a week drying out. Combining green pigweed with ripe oats is HELL. A beater/tines mightmare.

A great video very informative most discbines come with crimpers to help dry the hay the little cutters are called sickles they are guarded by guards there are 3 main popular hay mowers the discbine which is an improvement on the haybine and the haybine is the improvement on the sickle bar all good options depending on your situation. Very nice haybine gotta love em.

i like how bales work because its opposite to what you would think. like moister is supposed to keep fires down but when you bale it and compact it down it heats up and a good wind will start the bale up and most likely take half the field with it before anyone can do anything. also josh when you can afford it and have enough land i suggest a swather. not always looking back is awesome and i personally feel like its hard to beat one when cutting our hesston with a 16ft mower conditioner with cut at 9 mph with out missing a beat and the turn around time is unbeatable

those are great mowers. I spent my summers as a youngster on my grandmother's farm using one of those every year. you can get discbines with conditioning rollers though... or even opt for flails. would depend on what you're cutting. that's only on the pull type disc mowers to the best of my knowledge though.

not being a know it all! just some advice, investing in a hay Tedder (might be misspelled) it will help dry your hay quicker so it wont take as long to dry! In missouri if we ted it we can normally bale in under 2 days. Love your videos and if you do ever have a question about your equipment and need any questions answered feel free to message me. Im currently getting my masters in animal science so i can answer questions on livestock too! I enjoy seeing people starting farms and love offering any help i can give i will gladly do so!!

Mr. Stony, you were correct about lubricant your mower! On the other hand most disk mowers do have a flail type of conditioner, that works best for grasses, or a crimping conditioner, like what your mower has for more alfalfa like crops. Good video though?

I was a boy in the 60’s mowing hay with just a sickle bar.I remember when we first got fescue.I’d cut it let it lay a day rake it and Dad would bale it.I was the one throwing it to the cows in winter and that hay smelled so good.I recently asked the county agent who also is a lifetime farmer why it didn’t smell that sweet anymore and he said because of haybines.The crimping action causes a lot of plant sugars to be released and the hay is of lesser quality.I now mow with a disc not a discbine and have noticed that sweet smell again.I have often said if you could invent something new concerning haymaking every farmer would have to have one.To be fair the crimp will gain you a day in curing.

I’m not interested in sassy comments either but I am looking for all the information I can get. I’m about to inherit a 180 acre cattle farm and want to know all I can about buying a tractor. My main goal is to mow, rake, and bale hay and feed livestock. I’ve driven tractors for years and make a living putting agriculture equipment together but as far as practical operation I feel like I’m on the dark. How do I decide which tractor suits my needs? How do I know what horsepower and pto rating is required to run said equipment? Is there a tractor out there that can run all three without having to have multiple tractors? Please people don’t be rude I’m just a simple guy trying to uphold the family farm and learn all I can but any help or resources are greatly appreciated. Shout out to Stoney Ridge Farmer for making these videos! Keep em coming and thank you for all your instruction!

NRCS has cost sharing opportunities for people starting out, I also advise talking to your county extension office. Not sure where you are located but sometimes grants depend on the area. Land is always the largest initial cost, followed by infrastructure and then equipment. Depending on if you want to run livestock or cut hay or what type of farming you want to do. Feel free to reach out to me and i will help guide you as much as possible! Currently a masters student getting my masters in animal science so ive spend alot of time around many different types of farms.

@StoneyRidgeFarmer 6 жыл бұрын
My step dad uses a tedder...he swears by it...at some point in the next year or two I'll probably get one, folks use them here and I think a tedder would be especially handy at spreading out hay that got rained on after you cut it. He uses a disc mower and then teds it out to dry. They say a tedder does the same thing as the conditioner on the haybing

Problem mowing hay: Lots of rain led to 1st and 2nd cut together and the haybine keeps jamming up forcing me to turn off PTO, back up, and go forward again. The cuttet bar has new knives and the sliding shoes were raised as high as possible. Any ideas on how this problem can be overcome? Thanks.
@philippelaperle4679
@philippelaperle4679 10 ай бұрын
Problem solved by opening box from back of 474 and noticed the drive belt was loose. The adjustment was made by loosening the 4 bolts holding a plate that is attached to a smaller pulley wheel as opposed to the large wheel at the back of the box. Once the plate was loose the drive shaft attached to the small pulley wheel was pulled forward advancing the plate an inch or so. At this point the four bolts were secured and the haybinne went through the hay in 3rd gear low without any problems. Yahoo!

My land is very rocky and sloped. Will this implement be viable for haying on my farm?

if you pick up the rocks my brotha....also look at a sickle bar mower. Hay is typically cut very low so you'd better get out there picking up rocks

Damn I wish I could remember what my granddad's haybine looked like. I believe it was a New Holland as well. He sold his hay equipment after outsourcing his fields. I always wanted to make hay at least once.. and probably never again that lol. The baler had no hydraulics (mechanical set) and I'm guessing that's a considerable pain in the ass. Of the [literal] tons of junk in the barns, why the hay equipment grandpa? Oh well, RIP

Putting grease on the bearing is great. Please don't start the tractor until all greeseing is finished. You cannot get hurt by a tractor jumping in gear if it is not running. Warming the engine should be done with body parts could not get hurt. It could jump in gear.

In europe we got disc mowers with roller-crimpers, haybines are not common here.

Hope I didn't come across wrong when I left a comment on the disk video, wasn't my intention. I mow hay (roughly 100 acres a year) with a 492 New Holland (9 foot cut). Some tips on these mowers. Watch the end of your knife that connects to the gear box (called wobble box) for wear, you can destroy a good mower from not watching this. You can get replacement wear items from Shoup and much more cost effective than CNH. I usually tend to shoot for roughly 4MPH cutting speed works good for us. The rolls can be adjusted and if you are not seeing a crimp you like then you can look at your book and it will show how to adjust. To help with drying take and move your windrow boards in the back all the way out (the pieces that deflect hay behind the rolls) and the piece of tin under the sheet metal behind the rolls all the way up. This will allow for maximum spread. If you have any questions I can try to help!

I've got a haybine just like that and it will give you many years of good service . Little slower than a disc bine , but so much cheaper to maintain and work on.
