Thanks to Lindybeige for this collab! Check out Lloyd's Channel: / lindybeige
Before the use of coins and currency was established, how did Merchants and Traders determine the quality and validity of precious metals being offered to them in trade for goods and services? Lloyd from the Lindybeige Channel explains how this worked.
Modern methods to examine the molecular structure of things can be done non-destructively by a method called X-Ray Fluorescence. Before that, Nitric Acid was used to determine the quality of precious metal such as gold. Long ago, the use of a stone called a Touchstone was used to tell the difference between an item the user knew was authentic with a precious metal being offered to them. Today, the term touchstone has endured to mean something a person can rely on as a gauge of quality.

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

I dont really care that much for Lindybeige tbh. Not hating on him, but it just most of his "info videos" about weapons and old medieval arms tend to have skewed "facts". He doesn't do full research, nor admits when he's wrong when people call him out on it. Like I said I don't hate him, I just don't really like him. I do like some of HTME though.

Lindy is most definitely not one of the best historical youtubers. He's horribly biased against anything that isn't English, and doesn't bother to do any proper research. He simply turns on his camera when he wants to make a video, blabbers on about whatever he's made up today, and people eat it up. I'm a history student and can't even imagine where to begin on how wrong he is sometimes.

Thank you for your video. Regarding 1:07, Aqua Fortis (Strong Water) is today known as Nitric Acid. Muriatic Acid is today known as Hydrochloric Acid. By combining 1 part Aqua Fortis + 3 parts Muriatic Acid, this produces Aqua Regia (Royal Water) also known as nitrohydrochloric acid which is corrosive enough to dissolve even gold.

Having never watched the channel before, I spent the whole video thinking "Why did that coin say 'HTME'? Is it a formula for some heavy metal? Is it a designation of a country? Finally at the end I realized what I was missing. Great video, guys, many thanks!

Aqua fortis is nitric acid to be specific. Other "strong water" acids won't work because they can't dissolve silver and copper.

But before the tea trade with China "robbed" Europe or its silver, and gold was found in Mali, silver was the most common trade metal, so you want something that tests the purity of silver, and not the obscure unobtainable gold metal

Oh, and BTW, people did go to an AWFUL lot of trouble to trick touchstones by making their gold and silver only slightly impute. And they made a lot of money doing so. In fact I can't find the article offhand, but there was a famous Roman minter who was executed for it. And if I rightly recall, it was in England!

Don't metalurgists keep touchstones in their labs up to the present day? Great vid.
@WanderingLostMC
@WanderingLostMC 5 жыл бұрын
The stones that they keep now are more to get some of the metal on to do the acid test on. They are basically an artificial touchstone (originals were mostly jasper or chist) but they don't use them to compare colors of metal. The rub the metal on and then they drop acid on for the reaction comparison.

There is 3 main things we use to establish what minerals(stones) we are dealing with. Hardness, weight and the powder colour. The powder colour we get from a touchstone, but to day most hobby geologists simply use unpolished porcelain as a touchstone. On the underside of cops and plates there is usually a ring of unpolished porcelain that is good for this use. Since porcelain is white, it is actually even better then the traditional touchstone, because that makes it even more easy to see exact colour. (This underside with unpolished porcelain is excellent at sharpening your knifes on too by the way) ;) (And as steel gives away a black powder colour, you will also see that the porcelain become black when you use it to sharpen your knife with)

I was just gonna say, that's on their list! I mean, first they have to fully figure out wiring, which they're working on with copper (though filaments are typically tungsten or the like, though other metals will work at lesser efficacy), and then clear glass is of course an ongoing battle. But once all that's figured out, they can make one super easily!
