I don’t think I’m ever going to be as happy seeing a game get announced again as DMC5.

I know what I want to see: Vergil DLC.

This game EASILY hold up. Imo even in like 10 years it still could hold up.

I remember there was a quote my friend said that I fully agree with: You can pause the game in a fight at nearly any moment, go to photo mode, and it will look amazing.

This game is everything I had dreamt it would be. It took the hype we accumulated for 11 years, made justice to it, surpassed it, exceeded it and fucked its brains out. THIS is how you bring back a beloved franchise.

It's a minor detail but I really like that 5's extra material expands on 2's story and directly ties it to 4. There's a file in the report section that explains how Arius and the Ouroboros Corporation did what they did. Agnus worked for them, his research was responsible for all the stuff Arius did. Arius stole his research and fired him which led to Agnus joining The Order and continuing his research to achieve what they did in 4. It's a minor thing but it's more than 2 ever gave us. Like J, I was excited that 5 followed 2 so it could finally be addressed but was disappointed with the retcon putting it before 4. But rather than do that solely to ignore 2 with no issues, 5 actually fleshed out 2 and made it integral to the universe for the first time.

You know what's really shocking about this game? It's just so sincerely sweet and the ending is just so sentimental. I love it.

The three leads are still hot so it holds up perfectly.

DMC3 on the Switch has a Free Style mode where we have all Styles and weapons accessible. I’m already seeing combo videos about it and hopefully Capcom release as DLC for the HD Collection (other consoles that is not a Switch) but I doubt it

GAME OF THE YEAR EVERY YEAR

As someone who doesn't have time to play games that much anymore, I dedicated almost the entirety of 2019 to get DMC5 platinum trophy and I can count in my fingers the times I wasn't having fun or was bored. Got my platinum in January this year and even now I still want to play DMC5 because it's just way too much fun, it really is a special game and a complete package. I can't even remember the last time I wanted to come back to a game in a short spam of time, usually I wait 2-5 years or so.

Next steps for the series? - DMC5 SE with playable Vergil, Trish and Lady - DMC 2 REMAKE with the RE 2 Remake treatment - Castlevania/Bayonetta Crossover? - DMC 6

DMD is balanced, but it's not about HP versus defense. DMD is balanced around how well you understand the metagame and advanced mechanics. Sure you can get through the game even on SOS relying on the ground game and halfway decent dodging. DMD is where juggling and crowd control become essential tools.

I really wish the game had 21 missions. Imagine, you've made it to mission 20, it's the final showdown with Dante vs Vergil for the last time and when you win and think that the game's coming to an end it's like "YOU THOUGHT! MISSION 21 HERE WE GO"

I had a smile all the way through DMC5. It might be my favourite in the series. Out of a future game I wouldn't mind seeing either a solo Nero game or a prequel with Sparda.

This just makes me all the more confused why dante isn't in super smash bros ultimate. Like come on it would be so simple. You put bayoneta in so why not him?

As someone who does get really into the combos, V is the least broken of the characters. His pseudo-free actions are cool but he doesn't have enough attack variety to abuse his free action style. He would be an interesting character in any game that wasn't DMC, but plainly put, he doesn't have enough bullshit to be interesting in DMC. But, speaking of free actions, let us turn to Dante and the blade which shares his name. Oh my dog, find me the person that came up with DSD so I can kiss them. Lets give Dante free actions, and then lets also give him a mini-devil trigger that will pay for itself, and you can still gain DT while its active. Like, this arguably makes DMC5 Dante more busted than DMC3 Dante, and DMC3 is a broken(in a good way!) ass game. If I had one complaint about DMC5's combat, its that every character has "float lag," if you attack in the air but are close(less than standing height) to the ground, the character floats instead of dropping to the ground. While I understand this is good for the average player, for combo techs it means you can't landing cancel an air attack anymore, it makes Ladder combos more difficult(not in a good way), and low-air beatdown combos on knocked down enemys are nearly impossible unless its a Fatty enemy. Enemy jump cancel boxes are just a bit too big in my opinion too, again this is something that's good for the casual player, but it can make certain combo patterns a bit too finicky. Even with extremely tight timing, doing some aerial beatdowns always ends with you gaining a bit too much height. From someone who deeply understands the combat system, DMC5 is a fantastic entry and from a pure gameplay perspective, is a very strong contender for the Best in the series. Personally, DMC3's combat engine is superior in the things you can do with it(especially since the Switch re-release that allows on the fly combo switching), but if someone said DMC5 was their #1, I'd respect that opinion and wouldn't challenge it.

Capcom have a hard time with giving their franchises new protags. Whether it's Apollo or Nero, you're just not gonna beat the affection for that first character that established the franchise with a new expy that's basically the same but way less competent. The best you can hope for is giving 'em a metal arm or an eyepatch and have them hold out until everyone's favorite steps in the ring again. For what it's worth I think Nero is way better in 5 than in 4, but I don't think they can ever replace Dante with Nero any more than they could replace Phoenix with Apollo.

I would highly recommend you to play a significant amount of time in DMD, I think it's far and away the best difficulty. In Son of Sparda the enemies die way too quickly to let you take advantage of moves like Showdown and mechanics like SSSS. I also thought that at the beginning that enemies just never died, but once I learned how to use mechanics it got much better. I will say that V does feel pretty tedious on DMD, and even learning how to manage DT and Nightmare properly still doesn't really make the game that much more exciting, but finding the proper times to Buster enemies, gain DT with Blocks, Dodges, Air Taunts, and especially SDT with SSSS, enemies are way more fun to use. Staying on SoS will make you performance become stagnant because of how easily they die

I had no clue that DMC4 suffered from production issues! I was just flat out super hyped to get that as my first Xbox 360 game.

A year later and I’m still going for the Plat. Eleven years, man. A full 11 years after DMC4 and this is how the series returned. I hope we get more games and they just continue to get crazier like DMC5.

This was my first DMC( it was free) enjoyed every moment, V was my favorite to play as.

DMC 3 has better story and world design, but DMC 5 has a better gameplay by far

The huge criticism I haven’t seen anywhere: it would have taken the devs 10 seconds to make all 3 characters playable on all missions after you complete them. Could have been almost 3x content.

V is pretty fun to play on DMD where you have to keep a close eye on your pets. But he certainly needs an expanded moveset and more pet interactions to be fun.

DMC5 is brilliant. I’ve gone back and played the other games after finishing it, and I’ve been both more engaged with them, learning new things, and also less interested, just because DMC5 is that good. The only thing I think is outright bad in the whole game is Subhuman, but I can change that out so it’s only a problem when it shows up in cutscenes. Devil May Cry is the best it’s ever been, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Great video man; I didn't even know about the air taunt ability and I've been playing the game over and over since its initial release. One slight mistake however; regarding V I don't believe it was just a lust for power, if that was even the prime drive when he refused with his demon half. At this point, if he didn't, he would fade away entirely- it was always his goal to become "whole" again. And its his time, that portion of Vergil, that would result in the more developed Vergil we get at the end of the game. I could go more into it but I HIGHLY recommend you google up Visions of V; its only a handful of chapters but its a really fantastic manga piece that sadly hasn't been localized outside of Japan yet. It goes much more into all of the nightmares, Vergil's period as Nelo Angelo, and how V gets his clothes and money to hire Dante :P Anyway great timing for this- thank the Lord for mods because its the only way we can currently enjoy playing as Vergil (albeit, fun but extremely unbalanced and over powered). I really am flabbergasted we dont have any word of a special edition with him, not to even go into stuff like Lady's night.

It's funny how I get this in my recommendations right after coming from what feels like a two day lockdown of trying to go through another run of DMD. Couldn't agree more to what you had to say about that play mode! While "Son Of Sparda" forces you to perfectly time your combos and all the actions you can do, DMD just unnecessarily stretches out the enmies health to a point where you feel like you did EVERYTHING you can do to that boss/demon. And don't get me started on the moment where you almost killed it and that freaking thing pulls into devil trigger which rewards their health! Other than that, was so entertained to watch this! As a fan since 10 years now, 2010, I remember how hyped I was when this was announced last year and expectations where hit to the maxium. Basically you said everything what I thought of the game, so I look forward to the next video you teased at the end! I read some pretty cool theories and have an own one (or more sort of like a wish for DMC6), but Johnny slipped up once so I am sure there'll be a 6. Would love to hear your theories so everyone can discuss together in the comment section!

I like the review for the most part but I would argue that Dante is more mechanically complex in 5 rather than 4. Inertia doesn't compensate for summon swords and their passive abilities, more than doubled movelist, sin dt cancel, more flexible jump cancel that allows for better control and positioning in the air to partially compensate for losing inertia (you can direct your jump using the analog stick to whatever position you want after enemy stepping off an enemy), and better weapon design.

To me its very interesting, I just finished a No Damage No Weapons run for DMC5, and it seems like mastering this game is actually not as hard or fluid as DMC4, though definitely more smooth. I wonder do most people just play these games to beat them, I wonder if people actually try to do new things with enemies, and find new ways to manipulate them into combos.

Not going to lie I actually still every so often think of this game and then decide to throw it on and play it the thing that usually makes me turn it off it's playing as V on DMD mode, although I must agree with you this is the best Devil May Cry yet if I had to choose a second it might have to go to dmc4 special edition sorry 3 I just never had a problem with Devil May Cry 4 even with the left out content. however three definitely had the most complete story of all

I’m someone that this year got into the game series and got Devil May Cry 5. It’s honestly a fun game even for a person new to the series. One of my favorite things is how each main character has a different playlist. I’m almost finished with the first play through, and I’m already planning to play a second time. The Void is by far one of the biggest reasons I’ve gone from C and B ranks to S ranks these final missions. The enemies are great too, both in design and fighting mechanics. You have to change your style based on which enemy or boss you’re dealing with.

The thing i really like is that Vergil didn't full on discard everything V learned, it helped him mellow out, just a bit

I'd love a DMC with just Nero and Dante as playable characters. Maybe in DMC 6 where Nero gets overwhelmed on Earth while Dante and Vergil are stuck in Hell. The brothers work together to get through Hell and back out to Earth to help Nero before he gets killed or whatever. Also yes, this games still holds up, shit even DMC3 and 4 hold up. The only one that kinda feels dated is the original, which is a bummer because I really love that game. DMC2 I just don't care for so I don't give a shit if it feels dated. The only good thing about that game is the Dante outfit.

I’m not the best gamer but I Love the Devil May Cry games that I have played. When this game was announced I was so excited and we pre-ordered it as well. Truthfully I am a button masher so I love using V most but enjoy playing as the others as well. Also I really enjoyed how they gave Vergil a human side this time cause once I found out who V actually was I gained a stronger liking for Vergil and just loved how Nero didn’t want to lose either of them even if his dad is an asshat lol. All in all I come back to this game every once in a while and really enjoy playing it ever time I do.

Thanks for the tip i'm now looking to unlock super dante. I keep dying on floor 99 or 100 with just dmc 3 cqc set. Rebellion and gloves and ebony/ivory + shotgun. I love this game also.

I have to say. Currently loving DMC 3 SE freestyle mode on the Switch. This is what I needed. This play style switching and a whole 20 missions as Dante. Love DMC5 but, just wanted more Dante mission whilst everyone else wants some Virgil missions.

250+ hours, still playing this game since release. I keep learning new moves and mechanics as i improve. I've played many video games over the years and this game i can pick up any time and have fun. I hope dlc has a coop dungeon crawler similar do D3 of some sorts. And adding more characters of course. Its close to perfect! Thanks capcom

I never really got into V either. My main problem is that the familiars seem to teleport around a lot when you actually tell them to attack. They also have a delay before some attacks. I had a very hard time keeping track of everybody's positions, so I wasn't always in control which enemy they were going to attack. A lot of the times, they didn't react, and chaining their attacks together was also hard. Once nightmare joins the fight and everything explodes randomly, all I can do is buttonmash and hope for the best.

In defence of dmd mode: Large hp enemies are good if you want to do the advanced combos. Playing around with Dante and quad S melts enemies.

An interesting detail with Dante's swords is that Sparda's transforming blade is not just a visual detail. All the moves that make Sparda transform have higher damage than the same moves with Rebellion and DSD. DSD is overall the best sword (and arguably best DA in the series) but it shares Rebellion's damage values for all but 2 or 3 moves, not counting DSD exclusive moves of course. The few exceptions get the same boost as Sparda. Rebellion unfortunately has nothing going for it, beyond the combo utility of a third sword. Might be looking to deep into it but this could be a nod to how Sparda had higher damage output than Alastor but less versatility in 1. DSD having the same damage as Rebellion but far more applications fits it being an evolved Rebellion. Rebellion being the weakest with no unique traits fits since it is not a Legendary Devil Sword like the other two.

It fails in only one major aspect: lack of playable characters. DMC 4 had Nero, Dante, Vergil, Lady, and Trish, all with their own unique fighting styles, weapons and move sets. Sure, V is cool, I guess, but I'm just so not a fan of his "sit back and relax until it's time to land the final blow" style of combat. Compare it to Vergil, and it's just straight LAME. However, Nero was completely overhauled into a phenomenally fun character to play as, and is almost better than Dante (ALMOST). Great game, but when they were done, they were done. Still not a word from them about any kind of DLC

J do you have plans to look at the no more hero's games. That game seems like something you would like as you seem to love to go over the depth's of story and NMH has one of deeper stories with some light heartness chucked in for good measure

one thing i noticed was v and urizen merging to become vergil once again is suspiciously similar to omega zeros reveal in zero 3. the establishing shots are very similar, with omega zero facing the camera while vergil has his back to the camera. the boss subtitle of "alpha and omega" makes this even funnier, considering rockman zero 3 released before dmc3.

The fighting systems hold up (I even liked V's playstyle), but speaking as a casual fan of the series, the campaign got really samey towards the end. I went from "10/10 GOTY" to "when will it end already?" Felt like a glorified Blood Palace more than anything, they could've cut the last 5 missions or so (with some boss shuffling, of course), and the game wouldn't have lost anything. But then again, I feel in the love with the series because of its "Resident Evil where YOU have the power" design of the earlier entries, so maybe I'm not the one to talk.

The remake didn't have a bad story. It was great, people were just pissed it wasnt Castle Vania.

DMCV is probably the best action game I've ever played, I keep coming back to it in between other games all the time, it's truly a masterpiece and I can't even imagine it not holding up even in 10 or 20 years from now.

As much I enjoy DMC5, it made me realize how much I dislike the structure of DMC4 and 5. The "20 missions structure" doesn't work for two characters, let alone three. I'd much rather have it like DMC2 where Dante and Lucia had their own campaigns (without the repeated content, that is).

A year later and this game is still as good as when I first played it. I have just as much fun as the first time. Such an enjoyable game that gave me exactly what I wanted from a Devil May Cry sequel we waited 11 years for.

Gameplay wise, it holds up. Storywise, well I used to think it was solid, but after the honeymoon phase realized it ruined the impact of past games. Mundus and Vergil's character were ruined due to retcons in the lore. The graphics look nice and all, but I think the artstyle of prior games are better. Soundtrack while passable was disappointing since it lost the soul of DMC's sound. Everything is hype tracks that lack depth compared to past OSTs. Decent game tho.

Thanks for the awesome video! Can't believe it's been a year since this game blew everyone out of the water. Just one thing: I never interpreted V combining with Urizen as V falling to his desire for power. It felt more like a survival thing to me. Pretty sure he would have died if he hadn't done that. Guy was literally falling apart 😂

The gameplay is awesome but the plot is so dumb (and not the DMC way like the Faust hat), man. It has some great moments (like Nero's arc) and good dialogue, but everything else feels forced (Dante's and the main villain's motivations - *pun unintended*), has too much fanservice and lacks context. Heck, 3/4s of the game are about kicking Urizen's ass and the focus of the last four missions suddenly becomes killing the real main villain. It's so rushed, and the fact that Urizen is basically a nobody doesn't help its case. The main twist is so obvious it hurts, yet the game acts like it is unexpected. If the final boss had been the main villain all along I feel the story would have been better on the whole. I would have liked more missions for Nero and Dante, too. 20 missions aren't enough for three characters, especially when some of them are only boss fights (like the awful mission 14) and some of them are shared between characters. Doesn't help Subhuman (the best of the three character themes IMO) plays in two out of 8 of Dante's missions. Nitpicks: Devil Sword Dante looks ugly as hell, and locking Cavaliere R (aka the better version of the weapon) and the other versions of Gerbera (along with three uselsess arms) behind DLC is just dickish. I get the extra costumes and music, but locking some of the best weapons in the game behind a deluxe edition (which I didn't get)? Insulting.

@J there is another mechanic that you didn't take advantage of that if you get an enemy off screen before they start their attack animation no attack will land on you.

one thing to note with the whole V and Urizen thing, it’s not that V couldn’t overcome his lust for power and so merged with Urizen, it’s actually that he regretted everything he’d ever done, but didn’t want to die, he didn’t want Urizen so succeeded, but he wanted to live.

DMC games give me a replayability I dont get with many games. Great review bro.

Btw idk if you know about this or not but Quick Drive from DMC4 while not in DMC5's movelist it is in his moveset. No more 18:05 unless i plan to do all 3 in a crowd or something. Once i learned this i do it in every fight i'm in. It's. Just. So. GOOD!

Since it was released, even though i love the new GOW (although the two can't be grouped as comparisons anymore, some would argue ever) It is still the best true, while innovative hack and slash out there since NG on the original xbox, (or was it 360?) not the nes version the first 3d modeled one. every NG since then just got more watered down... DMCV is pure revitalized... (except although i love Dante, Nero is where i had the most fun with the "MAD" combo making and freedom especially post playthrough with hes Darm cancels etc...) I completely agree... if it came out this holiday, it would still hold up and be accepted as something new!

A missed opportunity has to be Bloody Palace not having co-op functionality. It would have been amazing having 2 or more players destroying the field of demons together.

This was my first DMC game and it was a complete surprise for me as I bought it on a whim and hack n slash rarely ever catches my attention or holds it as long as DMC5 has. Recently bought and finished it and it’s still on my mind. Vergil DLC tho plz and co op bloody palace. Games a 10/10 without but it’d easily be 15/10 w those two things.

One big thing that DMC5 is missing is Legendary Dark Knight difficulty, which is the same difficulty as Son of Sparda, but it adds tons of enemies in each fighting area that are from the mid to late game along with the early game enemies. It's my favorite thing in DMC4.

I'd love to see a DMC game where Sparda either makes a return or a prequel centered around Sparda

Holy SHIT ikr! Devil Hunter felt easier than it should be when I first played the game. It was only when I get to the final Urizen fight or summons fight that I begin struggling. In DMC3 I felt like I was vastly challenged ever since the 2nd mission with the reaper and after beating them so many time I feel really confident in my own growth as I started out dying 4 to 7 times to them to me being able to destroy 2 of them at once in style. I feel like in 5 the biggest obstacle was Vergil. Stayed up all night to beat him and managing my sin devil trigger.

Gotta be honest, I saw the trailer for DMC5, and got excited like a kid at Christmas, even though I had never played a Devil May Cry game before - except for the reboot. And then I played all DMC games in 3 months, what a ride!

Regarding the game not letting you carry health items anymore - If you have the Sweet Surrender DLC for Nero, then at the phone booth, you can equip a bunch of those arms, hold then release O to get a bunch of health back (which works outside of combat). Then you can go back to the booth to restock your arms. They practically act as health items. Though, this is for Nero only.

I started playing this game at the start of the year. At first I didn't like it that much because I didn't understand it but after I beat it on Devil Hunter mode, I can't stop playing it. I'm having so much fun with this game.

I highly recommend to check out Strive mode for the game. It fixes almost all issues high level players had with the game plus ads pvp mode
