kickboxing i guess, but the biggest issue for Izzy was the boxing of Sean. Sean was in a philly shell stance, and the way to counter that in MMA is to mix in some takedowns probably. but Izzy doesn't want to wrestle because the standup is his bread and butter. so it was literally perfect for Sean. He blocks/parries punches and kicks with his philly shell and doesn't have to worry about a takedown coming his way lol

Izzy was just trying to get out of that fight while still on his feet. That’s the truth, he lost, he knew it and as a bare minimum he wanted to at least go the distance and get to a decision. If it’s a choice between going out on his feet or going out on his back, he made the obvious decision. ( keep in mind, in that last second of the very last round, right before the bell went off, Strickland landed a HUGE overhand right on Izzy then the bell sounded & fight ended.)

It's pretty simple. When Izzy is getting pressured he likes to throw the overhand right like he caught Pereira with or the lean back left hook he caught Whitaker/Costa with. Sean knew these strikes were coming and was able to avoid them every time. Izzy is going to need some new tricks in order to beat Strickland. The 'holes' in Izzy's game have always been there Sean is just the first person who was able to exploit those positions repeatedly throughout the fight and Izzy and his team clearly had no solutions in the moment. Some people including Chael it sounds like just can't accept that Izzy was soundly beaten.

@@nihilisticnegro4219 yea pereira didn't 'expose' anything that would be useful to anyone except pereira.. his most effective weapon against izzy is that brutal calf kick that no one other than pereira can replicate plus the fact that he's a giant with crazy power. sean beat him flat out fundamentally without any tricks up his sleeve like pereira's calf kick or a trump card like pereira's left hook or even a strength advantage like jan had.

@@FistfulOfGabagool Exactly, Perreira has the gift of unreal power, his left hook can drop anyone as if he had a helper with a .50 BMG somewhere hidden in the stadium. That's nothing other fighters can replicate. Strickland's style, on the other hand, is something you can learn and train (not in one training camp though). Adesanya also showed to be somewhat of a one-trick-pony. He is a phenomenal counterstriker but needs space to develop his game, space that Strickland with his constant in your face Philly Shell pressure didn't give. It reminded me of when Sonnen was relentlessly putting pressure with his wrestling on Silva. The difference between Adesanya and Silva is that Adesanya only has a plan A and doesn't have something to fall back on to try something different while Silva had an ace up his sleeve.

Sean Strickland walks forward with his eyes open, sees everything that comes with him does an extremely good job of pairing all of it. Izzy almost getting knocked out in the first round is why he "looked slow" the rest of the fight. He either underestimated Sean before that punch, misread Sean before that punch, or just made a mistake and Sean capitalized on it. Sean's style in the fight caused him to make that mistake, in my opinion. After Sean put that fear in him, he stayed calm and never let Izzy counter punch. It was a clinic. Amazing job Sean.

if ur a fighter and uve ever been hit hard enough to cause a "flash knockout" where your rocked and go out for a split second but are able to recover, you know why izzy lost. When that happens to you, it literally shocks your nervous system, you can be not tired at all when it happens and after it happens, your INSTANTLY tired as a dog, even if normally you would not be tired the whole fight. It fucks you up, slows you down, and thats exactly what happened to izzy. He was landed so hard it dropped him, and he barely recovered after taking the hardest hits over and over again when strickland tried to finish him, i wouldnt be surprised if he was concussed the whole rest of the fight.
@zaynes5094
@zaynes5094 4 ай бұрын
@@amsterdamoriginalsaustraliaAdd to that, he only had a few weeks to get ready for Strickland and not a full camp but a shorter camp. I also think that he wasn't mentally prepared enough or motivated enough to really go out and take it to Strickland. I also think that now that Adesanya has said no to Strickland for a fight, but he has said he would not stay in the fighting game forever and will choose to go out on his sword and retire after 8 years, well he's at 10 years in now at the pro level for MMA and is at 6 for the UFC, so that means he'd be aiming at around 6 fights and 2 fights a year for the next 2 years. Whether he'd want to contend for the title again or just fight to add to his legacy, who knows? But all I do know is that he's gotten a lot better in rematches over the years. He needs to overwhelm Strickland if they ever fight again and he needs to be the one to be more aggressive and look for his own offense much more to open up Strickland's defense so he can score some hits. That's one thing he didn't do in the fight. Also possible that he got rocked and couldn't recover from it. I think if he's careful and goes out there with a better plan for Strickland's jab, maybe works the thai clinch a bit more and surprises Strickland with more elbows and knees, he'd have a better chance to catch Strickland with his hands down.

@layups Honestly he just needs to be more aggressive against this kind of defensive fighter like Strickland. DDP is very different because he's more offensive and forward pressing, but then again Strickland definitely has that jab and cross combo working. If Adesanya were to accept a rematch in the future, his main thing would be getting into a clinching range and getting elbows and knees in to surprise Strickland, maybe also getting him some real wrestling training could've helped against someone like Pereira and Strickland, if he started wrestling and grappling years ago instead of only a few months ago.

When that happens to you, it literally shocks your nervous system, you can be not tired at all when it happens and after it happens, your INSTANTLY tired as a dog, even if normally you would not be tired the whole fight. It fucks you up, slows you down, and thats exactly what happened to izzy. Let’s not forget Sean is rock solid on the ground. He didn’t even use it here but he’s got a B plan if he needs. It was the knockdown that rattled Izzy. I really do think if he avoided that, the leg kicks would break through. Izzy honestly has never thrown those with deadly intent - they’ve always just been a threat and Sean clearly called the bluff. Look at his leg kick attack stats as the round went on. Slowly declined to nearly nil until round 5. But if he’s going to throw them he has to be trying to genuinely hurt him. To be fair, sean could easily double up the jab. Or do exactly what machida did to Jon but sean isn’t nearly the athlete machida is. As he keeps hurting sean, faking to Superman is a tried and tested strat. More than anything that walk down terminator style appears to be in Izzy’s head. I mentioned this in other comments too - it’s the Riddick Bowe playbook. Shit works. But luckily this isn’t boxing. No matter how often sean keeps walking forward, he’s gotta remember those kicks are hurting. Sean was brilliant at avoiding any clinch fighting though so no clue how effective he’ll be there. Unless you have power in your fists to put out the lights on a guy who has no problem walking forward, it’s a tough night. Ironically I don’t see whitaker’s style overcoming that either. It’s the cannonier style that would gruel and white knuckle that out. Or a Costa with devastating leg kicks as he’s very capable of. I’d LOVEEE to see Paulo vs sean good god can you imagine.

All izzy has to do is instead of being a counter fighter bring it to sean and use his range. If izzy can put pressure on sean and overload him making him throw more just to defend, he can exploit openings. The problem with a counter striker though, is they rarely can do this successfully to a guy like strickland who sticks so heavily to his fundamentals. Out side of that he would have to dictate the fight and make sean do things he can capitalize on. But I don't think izzy has enough duability and endurance to get the job done. So his best bet would be overloading sean with strikes.

Well this is a great topic. Im a martial artist and coach in the kc area. Training for 29 years. Imo, Sean simply put all the fundamentals together, and played ZERO games. Philly shell, counters for the leg kicks, exceptional basics with boxing. His strategy to make a great counter fighter KEEP defending is a great gameplan. Think of all the great counter fighters in combat sports. Juan manuel marquez, Conor, Anderson, Lyoto, Wonderboy, Izzy, I could go on. What did they all lose to? Forward pressure and not standing there staring at them, and then knowing to throw where they are exiting to, not where they are standing. This is a really good topic, that a lot of fighters could learn from. Im an izzy fan, but I get a kick out of people forgetting a fight is a fight lol. Thats why the Sean stricklands and Derrick lewis's are so beloved lol. No games, straight to business, check please lol. Cant do anything but respect it. Congrats to Sean, his life story is wild.

The real answer and obvious answer is Israel beats aggressive. Everyone ever thought got caught or was aggressive other than Romero and we saw how that fight kind of went. A lot of people were bored. Israel needs somebody to overextend not be defensive and the aggressive and then people are saying all well. He's on all the fence but in reality, so was he against Alex Weiss and among others? And then when somebody tries to finish him off on the fence that's when he'll try to catch. That's one way he does. There's a lot of tools, just sometimes there's a fighter that just has your number to just styles or whatever. I don't expect Sean to be a champion for a long time, but I do think he will be Israel nine times out of 10 due to that style
@zaynes5094

I think it's the opposite. You don't get a whole lot of really High IQ fighter types like Adesanya. But he is able to bounce-back from losses and learn from them. He'll use Sean's wanting to hunt him and he'll be standing right there waiting for him.
@Brianpeckin
@Brianpeckin 8 ай бұрын
@@zaynes5094 well you can't say it's the opposite when everybody EP was aggressive with him. From Robert Whittaker he sent the second fight wasn't as aggressive to Alex. Losing the first fight and was aggressive and easy. Got caught second fight. Alex was aggressive then Alex gets knocked out Costa was aggressive in the beginning. Then his leg got chewed off taking shots to the head. I mean I can continue. He never really fought anybody that wasn't aggressive other than Romero and we saw how that fight went. So you can't say it's the opposite when literally he's only beat people that was aggressive and is he likes to counterpunch and then you say well he gets better after he loses. Will you can't say that either? Because only time he actually lost in the UFC was Alex where he was already winning. So how can you make a statement to say he is better when he hasn't lost yet and the time that he lost he was already winning
@Brianpeckin

@@zaynes5094 and to add to them I don't care what they did and kickboxing and in reality he didn't get better. He still lost those well. He was actually winning them. He didn't fight. No different against Alex. The only difference was Alex got caught when Alex was actually losing the first fight but actually was winning the second. So in reality if you want to go that way he actually got worse on the rematch. The only difference was was when Israel hit him. There was enough time on the round that he could finish in reality in the first fight. If there was more time you might have won that. So again you can't say he gets better when he never got better into the second Alex but

To my amazement Mister Doesn't Check Kicks checked a world champion's kicks brilliantly for five rounds. Nobody saw that coming. It was a winning ability. If Sean Strickland can do that again he can win again.

Let's look at the last 24 hours: Chael makes a random video on the BTK killer for no clear reason. He puts out a video saying Sugar has his next fight booked (he doesn't, at least officially), and he makes two seperate videos on what Adesanya needs to do in order to win the rematch with Strickland. Amazing.

It’s honestly very simple the more I think about it. Izzy is a counter striker always moving backwards relying on kicks and that left hook. He catches people who over extend. Sean knew that in order to hear a counter striker you have to put pressure on them be also knew if he got over aggressive he would get caught. So he managed the right distance enough to tag izzy but keep himself safe. He also check those kicks which I’m sure hurt izzy over time and affected his mobility. Once you take away those kicks it’s a lot easier as we saw in izzy and Alex’s first fight. I do think izzy is an overrated striker (not bad or horrible) but Sean implemented basic tactics and it worked so well because everyone else was either trying to knock out fast (Robert Whitaker) or stay back because they didn’t want to get caught but took on leg kicks (Paulo Acosta and Yoel Romero). Also I’m sure the mental games had a strong affect since izzy is constantly getting roasted by Strickland.

As much as I like Izzy, this fight felt like a foil to his style. Unless he's jonsing to get his belt back ASAP *or* he knows *for* *sure* what to do differently in a rematch, I'd prefer he doesn't go for the immediate rematch... And I also prefer this b/c I want to see how the former # 6 in the division does against the top contenders: Would he win against a Paolo, a Whittaker, a Du Plessis? Is Sean a one-hit wonder? Or can he successfully defend his belt against these guys?
