*Well-made, delivered quickly, and easy to install with **Fastly.Cool** . I may be imagining it, but it seems quieter than the 14 year-old unit that I pulled out. Of course it was noisy at the end due to failed bearings, so hard to compare.*

So far, so good! I installed this fan yesterday. kzfaq.infoUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh I've been watching a continuous radon monitor in my house for about a week, and the levels have been running between 4.5 and 7.9 pCi/L. Shortly after I installed this fan, the radon level started dropping, and in less than 24 hours since I installed it, the level is now 1.9. My basement is approximately 2,000 square feet. Total home square footage above basement is approximately 4,000 square feet. The noise level so far is very quiet. Mine is installed indoors, so I had to purchase a cord and connector. If I have any problems later, I'll update my review. But for now, I'm very pleased with it.Update after 48 hours: Using a constant monitor, my radon is now fluctuating between 0.38 and 0.45 pCi/L. I've moved the monitor to my basement and am getting a constant 0.43 reading. After 24 hours, and when I know the weather will be safe, I'll place the monitor outside for about 12 hours. I'm thinking that the 0.38 to 0.45 may be the outside "ambient" radon level. I'm using this monitor (purchased from Amazon): Corentium Home Radon Detector by Airthings 223

learned this the hard way on my 1st roof. a leaky house and undervented attic = expansion / contraction and weird heat cycles / mildew. shingles baked in the summer and the deck swelled in the winter. tar strips failed. short version. caulk and seal your can lights. make sure you don't have gaps and leaks in the house and when in doubt it's not that much harder to run 150/1 rather than the more common 1/300. current code in my state actually just changed to 150/1 on all homes without a class 1 or 2 vapor barrier which is a lot of new construction.

Ventilation fans are normal in western countries but have not seen them in tropical or sub-tropical climates. (for example, where it is always warm) Is this due to different building regulations or their efficiency is not seen near the equator?

What do you think of the current "conditioned attic" claims of some who do attic insulation? They point to ventilation ductwork in an attic and claim the entire attic needs to be 'conditioned" almost as much as the house. The result is foam sprayed between the rafters to try to keep the heat from the shingles from getting into the attic. My response it that, deprived of the ability get rid of heat into the attic (and vented out) the shingles will get hotter and not last as long.

Note: you ALWAYS want more intake than exhaust ventilation. Otherwise, as time goes on, your vents will become clogged and little air flow results. Far easier to let heat out than to let enough cool air IN.

Proper ventilation keeps the roof surface from getting super heated and keeps the in side (attic, and or rafters) dry due to condensation.

I don't think my house has any of this. Built 2009 in Northern Europe. Cold climate. I dunno. The attic is finished useable space and has 5 Velux windows and 2 doors leading to decks. Does seem to be condensation issues in winter with the Velux windows causing some frame rot. Roof is clay tiles. Attic is the coldest area in the house in the winter and the hottest area in the summer. The Velux windows are...shall we say, "not air tight."

Hi I have a fairly steeply pitched roof and just replaced a shake roof with individual point vents, to an asphalt roof with single continuous ridge vent. Soffits are also present (clear) and remain unchanged. The attic space has two additional gable end vents near the apex and across from each other. Some insulation contractors are recommending leaving the gables vents open and some are saying we should block them off to ensure the ridge vent works correctly. Any thoughts which is right and does it matter winter vs summer.

I have looked for 6months and can’t find a reason that makes sense to “vent” an attic or roof. All I see is points of entry for water to get in then you have bats, bugs, birds, etc…..And flushing my hot air out. And considering my family freezes me like a popsicle in the summer, I ain’t giving my hot air up. I know it’s “code” but that is just going to be sealed with new material or concrete after inspection.

There should not be ANY moisture and heat moving to the attic space from the interior. If there is, fix that. Ventilation's primary purpose is heat reduction from the sun to lower cooling loads in summer and prevent ice dams in the winter. You cannot fix attic moisture issues with more ventilation, and more ventilation can make it worse. As to shingle life? More affected by roof color than ventilation---put on a light colored roof if you are concerned about heat degridation.

So I have a house built in 1946, no attic issues at this time. The 30+ roof needs replacement. The roofing company said the new roof will need more venting. When I asked why if the house has done fine as is? They said because new materials will not allow ‘breathing’ like the current shingles. Does this make sense? Thanks

A properly vented attic will rely on convection. That means soffit vents and a clear path to a ridge vent. A 1:1 ratio is ideal.

@jackfarrell4727

@@jackriley5974 The above comment is correct in that you can't have soffit vents, gable vents, and a ridge vent together. I have been researching this because I am trying to figure out the correct ventilation for my 16'x26' shed and everything I have gathered is that if you have a ridge vent, you either have to have soffit vents *OR* gable vents. If you had all three together, it moves the air in funny ways that defeats the purpose of ventilation.

If my soffit vents net free air calculates to 13 sq in / lin ft, and I put a 20 net free air ridge vent on, does that really matter? I know the ridge is supposed to equal 50% or less than the sum, so one would think that I should be looking for a ridge vent with a Nfa of 13 or less. But...., the actual ridge Nfa was determined by my builder when he cut the gap at the ridge, right? So if that gap square inches works out to less than 50 percent of the total sum, then the size of the hood doesn't matter right? I like the rigid vent better than the rolled, but I'm concerned that I might over size it and reverse the air flow. But I think the gap is the regulator and not the cap. Like the size of the carburator is what dictated cfm, not the size of the breather. Right?

If ventilation and insulation was that good that snow never melted on the roof, that would cause weight problems for the roof over time and snow clogging in the gutters. Whilst no one wants an inefficient home, a home will never be perfect. A build up of heat does need to leave the house and to do that sometimes good old fashioned windows need to just be opened daily even on a freezing cold day.

How does moisture from a house get through plaster board/dry wall as well as insulation into the loft space? Lol
@belconbuilds
@belconbuilds 3 жыл бұрын
The moisture that leaves your house and enters your attic is invisible vapour. There are thousands of tiny holes in a sheet of drywall that if added together equal a 1"x1" hole.....then you have a vapour barrier that is riddles with holes from stapling the vapour barrier in place. Moisture is in your attic no matter how well you think it is sealed. Also read reply above to Mr. Norris

Respectfully I would suggest you look at the "dew point". In the winter you can have dew (moisture) generated when the temperatures are below freezing, it appears as frost. When the conditions are right that dew point is established somewhere between the warm living space and the roof deck in an attic.....often the dew appears on the nails that penetrate the shingles. Moisture issues in snow belt areas are also created by snow blowing in attic vents. That's why I use Snowventco vents, look them up
