I don't think my house has any of this. Built 2009 in Northern Europe. Cold climate. I dunno. The attic is finished useable space and has 5 Velux windows and 2 doors leading to decks. Does seem to be condensation issues in winter with the Velux windows causing some frame rot. Roof is clay tiles. Attic is the coldest area in the house in the winter and the hottest area in the summer. The Velux windows are...shall we say, "not air tight."

Note: you ALWAYS want more intake than exhaust ventilation. Otherwise, as time goes on, your vents will become clogged and little air flow results. Far easier to let heat out than to let enough cool air IN.

Just added a soffit vent and my attic temps went UP.

learned this the hard way on my 1st roof. a leaky house and undervented attic = expansion / contraction and weird heat cycles / mildew. shingles baked in the summer and the deck swelled in the winter. tar strips failed. short version. caulk and seal your can lights. make sure you don't have gaps and leaks in the house and when in doubt it's not that much harder to run 150/1 rather than the more common 1/300. current code in my state actually just changed to 150/1 on all homes without a class 1 or 2 vapor barrier which is a lot of new construction.

A properly vented attic will rely on convection. That means soffit vents and a clear path to a ridge vent. A 1:1 ratio is ideal.

Proper ventilation keeps the roof surface from getting super heated and keeps the in side (attic, and or rafters) dry due to condensation.

I have looked for 6months and can’t find a reason that makes sense to “vent” an attic or roof. All I see is points of entry for water to get in then you have bats, bugs, birds, etc…..And flushing my hot air out. And considering my family freezes me like a popsicle in the summer, I ain’t giving my hot air up. Total home square footage above basement is approximately 4,000 square feet. The noise level so far is very quiet. Mine is installed indoors, so I had to purchase a cord and connector. What do you think of the current "conditioned attic" claims of some who do attic insulation? They point to ventilation ductwork in an attic and claim the entire attic needs to be 'conditioned" almost as much as the house. The result is foam sprayed between the rafters to try to keep the heat from the shingles from getting into the attic. My response it that, deprived of the ability get rid of heat into the attic (and vented out) the shingles will get hotter and not last as long.

My shingle manufacturer wouldn't even give me the full warranty without having a ridge vent installed.

Hi I have a fairly steeply pitched roof and just replaced a shake roof with individual point vents, to an asphalt roof with single continuous ridge vent. Soffits are also present (clear) and remain unchanged. The attic space has two additional gable end vents near the apex and across from each other. Some insulation contractors are recommending leaving the gables vents open and some are saying we should block them off to ensure the ridge vent works correctly. Any thoughts which is right and does it matter winter vs summer.

Wow, a video about attic ventilation does not even properly show the placement of soffit baffles. The air is to escape behind the baffle, not in front it. I am just a lowly homeowner and even I know this. But these knuckleheads don't. Terrible video.

Ventilation fans are normal in western countries but have not seen them in tropical or sub-tropical climates. (for example, where it is always warm) Is this due to different building regulations or their efficiency is not seen near the equator?

There has to be a better way to build a roof! Why have a peaked roof! Make it slanted from front to back and seal it!

If ventilation and insulation was that good that snow never melted on the roof, that would cause weight problems for the roof over time and snow clogging in the gutters. Whilst no one wants an inefficient home, a home will never be perfect. A build up of heat does need to leave the house and to do that sometimes good old fashioned windows need to just be opened daily even on a freezing cold day.

One of your diagrams shows the sheetrock suspended in space below the bottom chord of the truss. This is misleading.

There should not be ANY moisture and heat moving to the attic space from the interior. If there is, fix that. Ventilation's primary purpose is heat reduction from the sun to lower cooling loads in summer and prevent ice dams in the winter. You cannot fix attic moisture issues with more ventilation, and more ventilation can make it worse. As to shingle life? More affected by roof color than ventilation---put on a light colored roof if you are concerned about heat degridation.

Be careful when selecting a ridge vent and opt for gable vents in addition if the aesthetics will allow.
