📄𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭:
This is a molecule of soap or, to give it its chemical name, sodium stearate. It consists of 2 parts: a lipophilic tail and hydrophilic head. The lipophilic tail interacts with fats, oils, lipids, and non-polar molecules whereas the hydrophilic head interacts with water and other polar substances. This structure is the key to soap’s cleansing and germ-killing properties.
If we wash our hands without soap, we can only clean off dirt that’s soluble in water. Water alone can’t remove oily substances since it can’t interact with them. But if we wash our hands with soap, the lipophilic tails attach to oily substances and spherical structures called micelles are formed. When we rinse our hands with water, the water molecules interact with the hydrophilic heads. As a result, the micelles are carried away by the water molecules and all the dirt comes off from our hands.
What about germs? Does soap kill them? The answer is: yes. Germs such as bacteria, viruses and fungi have lipid cell membranes. So when we wash our hands with soap, the lipophilic tails attach to the membrane and with the help of a water flow, tear the germs’ membranes.
Mankind has been using soaps since ancient times. They’re easily made and, as we’ve seen, are effective against dirt and germs. Today we use mainly liquid soaps instead of bar soaps. Although they’re equally effective, there are some small differences. Bar soap is made with sodium hydroxide (or lye) and liquid soap is made with potassium hydroxide (or potash). Bar soap contains fewer chemicals and is more environmentally friendly whereas liquid soap likely has a better pH level for the skin. Bar or liquid variety - both can help prevent you from getting sick. So, whenever possible, use them and stay safe.

Turn the water down to a minimum drip while scrubbing your hands with soap and then back up when you start to actually rinse the soap off your hands. No need to waste a gallon(s) of running water during this time.

@@wonderfulplayz2485 The first thing they teach you in ranger survival school is that cloths and shelter are the most important things. Fire and cleaning yourself with safe water is secondary. It doesn't matter if your hands were clean or if you had a fire going when you died from the scorching sun or hypothermia from freezing rain due to not having a shelter and protective clothing.

Lipophilicity and hydrophobicity are not same. Yes most of lipophilic molecules are also hydrophobic or vice versa but there are some exception such as silicones and fluorocarbons. These molecules are hydrophobic but not lipophilic.

How long (seconds) does it take to form micelles once the lather is formed?
@ScienceWorld1
@ScienceWorld1 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on size of dirt particles, bigger particles need more time than smaller ones, but we can say that according to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) hand washing time needs to be at least 20 seconds.
@meenakshichelani
@meenakshichelani 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScienceWorld1 can you please explain this to me step wise - 1. We wet our hands 2. Put liquid soap on hands 3. When we rub our hands together, lather is formed. While we rubbed were the micelles formed? Or rubbing only disburses soap molecules and then the chemical reaction happens to form micelles. I want to understand why is rubbing important- to form micelles or only to disburse soap molecules on hands.
@ScienceWorld1
@ScienceWorld1 2 жыл бұрын
@@meenakshichelani Whenever soap molecules come across dirt or germs, they begin to bond to them. So we need to disperse soap molecules to our hands' surface. Also some of dirt or germs hold on skin very strong. Even soap molecules form micelles around them, water molecules might not lift and remove them from hand surface. So rubbing hands is very important to disperse soap molecules and also it helps lifting dirt or germs from skin.
@meenakshichelani
@meenakshichelani 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScienceWorld1Thank you for responding. So, when we wash hands as per CDC recommended steps, we wet our hands and then put soap and then rub. If we dont wet our hands and only put liquid soap and rub - will it still disperse soap molecules? When we add soap and water lather is formed. This lather forming means dispersing soap molecules or it means micelles forming. They recommend 5 stokes at each area we are covering. So in those 5 strokes of rubbing which is effectively 2 seconds - we are dispersing soap molecules as well as lifting them up through rubbing. I want to understand whether 5 strokes of rubbing is enough to disperse soap molecules as well as lifting the micelles from skin.
@ScienceWorld1

@@meenakshichelani "If we don't wet our hands and only put liquid soap and rub - will it still disperse soap molecules?" Yes it'll disperse but not perfectly. Since water makes easy the movement of soap molecules. --Lather forming really means reducing surface tension of water but we can think of like soap molecules are dispersed, that's ok but all surface of hands should be covered by lather. --To be honest I've never heard about 5 strokes. CDC recommends that "Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds."

How do you know the drain doesn’t go into a bucket or cistern? Then reused. Also what if that isn’t potable water that is running? You are making many assumptions. They might even be somewhere that uses river or rain water.
