I recall seeing the B2 for the first time as a teenager. My family was at an air show (my dad was an airman) and a B2 happened to be nearby doing a training exercise, so it was arranged that it would make an unscheduled appearance. No one was allowed to photograph/video it or anything. The announcer kept talking this thing up, so the crowd is actively looking and listening for the plane to arrive. Never saw it or heard it until it was nearly directly over us. It was a surreal experience.
@Redmanticore

the "No one was allowed to photograph/video it" is really old-school rule.. that the army, being conservative in many of their rituals, still doggedly sticks to because it reads so in their orders, despite it having no relevance in the modern spy game.. i would allow the public take and video all they want. the detailed technical schematics are just stolen with elaborate operations. they arent physically taking pictures of them with long-range lenses, that would serve little purpose any longer. they will much rather, say, get 600 000+ technical documents with a security breach, than some dingy few photos. ( happened in 2011 to lockheed martin and boeing, that we publically know of. had b2, f35, f22, the works. )

The Germans were terrible at coming up with code names. So bad that they didn't even seem to understand the concept. When the US captured one of the submarines equipped with the Alberich tiles, they had no idea what the purpose was. They thought it might be intended to protect from depth charges. Once they figured out the Germans had named the project after an invisible dwarf, the intent became obvious. When your code name gives away the secret, is it really a code name??

Welcome to my life. From the F-117 to beyond the B-2 (1984 - 1992). I like these stories because it brings back so many memories. Even seeing a picture of the Mojave desert can bring back the distinctive smell of the desert. How I miss the feeling of a sonic boom or going flying. The Space Shuttle landing's and other Above Top Secret thing's I got to see out at Edwards. Makes me glad that this is part of who I am.

*IMPORTANT CORRECTION:* The Horton 229 was... not a stealth bomber. Like, at all. I know you pointed that out (good catch, btw) but you then repeated the popular myth that the B-2 echoed - or was perhaps inspired by - the Horton 229. It was, in fact, directly inspired/echoed the YB-35. It's basically a spirit with propeller engines, built by the same company, crafted four years before the Horton 229, built as a prototype long range bomber. The project was plagued by a slew of problems, however, and became the YB-49, and then eventually became the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Basically Northrop were R&Ding stealth tech (apparently somewhat accidentally) before it was cool - mostly as a way to increase lift so they could add more bombs. The Horton 229, while interesting in its own right, was completely unrelated to the project. Otherwise it's a good episode. The YB-35/49 planes might've made for a more interesting lead-up to the B-2, but I understand that since they weren't *super* related to stealth that they were omitted. Though, uh, as we found out the Horton wasn't really related to stealth, either. More just a claim made by one of the designers who couldn't actually produce what he said he could. So *Today You Found Out* a little more than you thought you would. Hopefully. :3

I can answer my that question, Jim. To be invisible, you simply pull your Jedi cape tightly over your head, and spin around 12 times clockwise, and 47 times counterclockwise. This will render you completely impervious to laser blasters, light saber strikes, or Sith Lord finger lightning. If however, you're an adolescent on a playground, your friends will beat you savagely.

Does light have weight? Can light of different wavelengths be “stacked” on top of each other and not mix with the other wavelengths? Also, can wavelengths of light bounce back off earths atmosphere? Instead of a “tight” radar beam an “umbrella” beam can be created to observe everything under regardless of “stealth” capabilities.
@darrylviljoen6227
@darrylviljoen6227 Жыл бұрын
There have been entire scientific papers written on each of your questions (more or less) but to massively over simplify the answers: Does light have weight? Yes. Can different wavelengths be stacked? Yes. Can they be bounced off the atmosphere? Not to my knowledge, though perhaps of clouds. Can you make an umbrella like radar? Yes, by having multiple radars pointing in different directions. Like AWACS aircraft. Will they be any better at detecting stealth aircraft? No.
