Күн бұрынHow does the phalanx CIWS work | How powerful Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) - The Phalanx is a close-in weapon system or CIWS is a largely defensive piece of kit designed to shoot down incoming anti-ship missiles. The Phalanx is arguably the most cutting-edge CIWS currently around, sporting a powerful 20 millimetre (0.8-inch) M61 Vulcan autocannon, advanced dual-antenna Ku-Band radar array and huge 1,550 round munitions drum. It was designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics Corporation, Pomona Division, later a part of Raytheon. The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense or point defense against anti-ship missiles and attacking aircraft, including high and maneuvering sea-skimmers.

Major weakness of that ciws is the limited ammo capacity for that drum magazine

3k RPM fire rate, so it has roughly 30sec of continuous fire. I'd say that's enough to neutralise more than a few incoming threats.

Well not a weakness it actually helps because the system only needs to relieve power and chilled water or seawater from the ship no more than that if we receive ammunition as well it further limit the movement of the system itself

People talk about speed as it's the end all be all, missles going that fast are not very maneuverable just based upon physics. Additionally the hypersonic missles do not fly at sea skimming levels, so the are detectable at much greater distance and can be engaged my long range missles. Personally I think Russian trolls are obsessed with the speed thing, but obviously not the perspective of alot of the world, many people think for instance the NSM is way more of a game changer than a hypersonic Anti-ship missile.

the phalanx is a last line defense, it was never meant to compete with top of the line hypersonic missiles, we have systems equipped for those(and just simple maneuvers, hypersonic missiles can't be redirected without throwing it way off target) I don't think anybody still truly believes the phalanx is meant for hypersonic missiles

The supersonic missles will be shot down by SM6 or a combination there of..lots of options before it gets to the Phalanx..or just turn the ship as at hypersonic speeds it takes miles just to make a slight course adjustment
