A close-in weapon system (CIWS), often pronounced "sea-whiz", is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses, typically mounted shipboard in a naval capacity. Nearly all classes of modern warships are equipped with some kind of CIWS device.
There are two types of CIWS systems. A gun-based CIWS usually consists of a combination of radars, computers, and multiple-barrel, rotary rapid-fire cannons placed on a rotating gun mount. Missile systems use infra-red, passive radar/ESM or semi-active radar terminal guidance to guide missiles to the targeted enemy aircraft or other threats. In some cases, CIWS are used on land to protect military bases. In this case, the CIWS can also protect the base from shell and rocket fire.
But which one is the best in Matsimus's opinion? Let's find out!!
Hope you enjoy!!

Having been in the danish navy for 13 years, 1987 to 2000, ive seen a few of these guns in operation. The american CIWS is reliable, and self running to a scary degree. Operated by people who really know their job. One of the operators told me, that during an exersice it shot between the space of the rear superstructure and mast, to get to the missile. (American Ticonderoga class) The Goal Keeper is brute power . . a story goes that during an exersice the Goal Keeper shot down the target as intended , and then started eating the towing line towards the plane dragging the target. True? Dont know, put cool story if so :). Kashtan, or CADS-1N as i know it, is just scary. We were trailing a couple of Russian ships comming out of Kalinningrad, because our Intel told us they would test some guns .. didnt tell us what guns. But mother f...er .. they were 3-5 miles away when they let the the gatlins loose. I was in the bridge wing of our ship with a 400mm camera taking pictures .. saw this flame .. must have been 5-8 meters long judging by the ship, i believe it was the Neustrashimyy class, and some seconds later a ROAR came to us. Like a bull from Hell. . . Another flame went out, a Roar and then two missiles. . . They turned and went back to port. The Drone was GONE. . . a story to remember for me. :)

About that story of the Goalkeeper, it is true, I was on that ship when it happened. Total panic, stopped right on time. It started eating the cable towards the Learjet. Normally the jet flies over and the Goalkeeper has a safety sector on one side of the ship. This sector was somehow wiped in the CMS and therefor it kept going from port to starboard side. I have to say, the goalkeeper is an awesome system, especially with the new upgrade, while it is so old already! developed in the 80's. I would not say the Phalanx is reliable, I'v seen many problems with it. Goalkeeper too, but that's just lack of money for proper repairs and maintenance. Phalanx jams, Goalkeeper nearly never. Funny story, when Hollands Signaal developed the Goalkeeper and tested it in the Pacific, the Americans were really impressed but couldn't express that because it wasn't an American system. So, they created their own copy: the Phalanx. Hollands Signaal, now known as Thales, is an amazing developer of weapons and sensors. Also, the Chinese have made an upgraded copy of the Goalkeper with better stats and a more reliable performance (or so they say) but I haven't seen one in action yet. I have to say that these type of systems run towards an end with the current weapon developments. There are mach 6 missiles, no gatling gun CIWS can handle that. I think the future is in RAM systems. The main problem with those are reloading. The Russians thought of that with the auto reload system. Only problem is, you usually shoot at least 2 missiles per incoming threat. So you can counter 4 incoming missiles. As attacker, you would want to saturate your targets' defenses by firing everything at once. Reloading takes too much time. Firing 5 missiles at your target would make them rely on their gatling gun. 8 missiles on their fire drills or even worse, their rafts. I think the German RAM system is the best CIWS when it comes to capability and reliability (that I know of). It increases the ships' defense saturation so much. While an SM2 or ESSM defense is restricted to tracking and uplink capability of the firing platform (like in the movie Battleship, an Arleigh Burke firing more missiles then there phased array can handle... so fake).

You are mistaken on the goalkeeper, it uses a completely different fire control system from the phalanx. This fire control system is what makes the goalkeeper so good. During international cooperative training sessions where multiple different ships try to take out a drone with their CIWS, the goalkeeper useually goes last since its almost guaranteed to destroy it beyond recognition.

After 20+ years as a Naval Weapons System Tech I think you are missing one of the biggest issues with many CIWS's that's cartridge-Drum size and reload time. this is where the goalkeeper has a large advantage as its magazine fed from below decks so has a much larger ammo capacity. as much as I loved working on the Phalanx its 1500 round drum is its biggest issue.

@troll oracle Maybe, but basis is perfect so any upgrade is more or less easy. Take, for example, AK-47. Very, very reliable weapon but with pretty bad sights. So, put on AK-47 good sights and you got almost perfect weapon. On the other hand, you can put on M-16 whatever you want it will be still very unreliable weapon.

Back when I was in our MK15s were capable of countering missile, aircraft, 3” & 5” gun projectiles. That was 27 years ago. They were prototype testing the next mod of the weapon system mount to autonomously acquire and engage surface threats. My Dad, also a Navy vet said that when they first tested Phalanx they had to shut down the system as it would begin to acquire and engage its own projectiles lol. One of my buddy’s on the Chosen said that they had a drone go terminal toward the cruiser during a live missile drill. Both MK15s lit that drone up and nothing touched the warship. Regarding Russian CIWS. They tend to go for overkill as their technology has historically lagged behind and they don’t have the accuracy of Western CIWS. Still impressive to look at.

That Person Yes, because of advances in radar signal processing CIWS is moving onto ground units. The US Army is field testing truck mounted Phalanx systems to shield ground forces. They plan to use proximity-fused explosive rounds because solid core rounds (like bullets) continue to obey gravity when they miss. Not much of a problem when the only thing they can do is crash into the ocean.

US carriers has multi layered defence, starting with fighters and E-2's, Aegis, Sea Sparrow, Phalanx at the end. (And younger systems as well.) The Russian (Soviet) doctrine is of a saturation attack, with 24-100 supersonic cruise missiles per carrier group. Around 30% against the carrier, the rest opens the way through Aegis, CIWS, whatnot. And only one missile has to reach the carrier, and it's game over, even with conventional warheads. :) Obviously, the Russians well prepared themselves against such an attack. And I'm perfectly okay with not knowing who would win.
@VashtheStampede007
@VashtheStampede007 6 жыл бұрын
Not overkill for Russians. Consider they only have one aircraft carrier. In the case of a real naval battle, their fleet is likely to be fired on by many waves of fighter jets long before they can fire their own anti-ship missiles. They had to survive all the incoming missiles... more like waves after waves.

I was trained on the CAS and STIR radars. We controlled the missile launcher and the 76mm gun mount. Since I was on a minimum manned ship, (we trained reservists) I also learned the CIWS and was on the gun mount misfire crew. I also had to learn some engineering systems as it pertained to flooding because I had to do roving security while in port. We had 7 FC's on board, 1 GMG's and 2 GMM's. I learned a lot about my ship and loved it. I took care of the cooling room that we called the "bowling alley", and I got to extract a misfire from the gun mount. I volunteered for everything, and I doubt there was anyone on board that knew more than I did about that ship.

One issue I have with the Millenium Gun at 7:30: Because it uses shrapnell munition, is it not quite ineffective against bigger and more armored targets like let's say a big fat P-700 Granit missile or its successor the Zircon missile?
@jonny2954
@jonny2954 6 жыл бұрын
Every gun based C-RAM uses shrapnel, they can't hit the thread directly. The Millenium gun is the largest caliber RAM (35mm while the US uses 20mm), according to rheinmetall it "Counters aerial threats including incoming surface-to-surface guided missiles at ranges three or four times greater than conventional close-in weapon systems". It's the larger round itself, the better accuracy (no gatling gun but only rotating breach), and the heavier airburst payload that enables higher range and lethality.
@StigmADiabolicuM666
@StigmADiabolicuM666 6 жыл бұрын
They both use offensive maneuvers like "S" maneuver or just jump up and down, and against Zircon guns have less then a second to act on it before it hits the boat
@alexanderstrauss7949
@alexanderstrauss7949 6 жыл бұрын
No, not every CIWS. The Phalanx CIWS for instance uses armor-piercing rounds, probably out of tungsten or depleted uranium, but definetly not shrapnel munition. And yes they can hit the target directly because they fire a lot of rounds at the target, some of them will hit. Again, I think the Millenium gun is weaker against more armored targets. Edit: I guess it doesn't matter because an more armored aircraft will be shot down with missiles before it come in range of the CIWS and if a Zircon missile (or many of them at once) you are fucked anyway, no matter if you use a high rate of fire gatling gun with armor piercing rounds or the millenium gun with shrapnel munition.
@jonny2954
@jonny2954 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, i compared the C-RAM version of Phalanx wich uses HEIT-SD. The Millenium gun combines the fields of CIWS and C-RAM respectively, it's official designation is literally "CIWS C-RAM". For 'armored' targets, it depends on the type. The Millenium engages at a much longer range, filling the sky in front of the thread with a tungsten subammo dust. The Phalanx will do the same, just with much fewer but larger projectiles. 35mm AHEAD was tested sucessfully against armored helicopters by the dutch army in a IFV at only 200rpm. A missile flying at high speed through that tungsten dust will get totally obliterated.

Could have added Spains Meroka CIWS for top 8, but couldnt agree more with this selection, only problem is that all those guns have code to intercept missiles with speed up to 2-3 mach and with hyper sonic missiles entering service makes question of their use in the future. And considering lasers and their use under sea conditions and power supply for them think bullets are there to stay for some time still.
@johnbrown9181
@johnbrown9181 6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree about bullets staying, however a mach 2-3 missile is still more than capable of taking out a mach 5 or more missile - short-range defensive missiles can afford to be smaller, lighter and more maneuverable, and an extremely high-speed missile would have a very hard time maneuvering to get out of the way. The primary reason for making extremely fast missiles, in case you're not aware, is to get from the radar horizon when the target ship can first see them, to the ship in as little time as possible, to try and overwhelm the defenses.
@StigmADiabolicuM666
@StigmADiabolicuM666 6 жыл бұрын
Shooting 3 ton missile at 6 mach with all its inertia wouldnt do much, considering radar horizon of ships being at 20km it would have less then 10 second to react on 6 mach missile at 1-2m above sea , and they always go on swarms of 4 and more (from russian side)
@johnbrown9181
@johnbrown9181 6 жыл бұрын
At mach 6, the atmospheric drag at sea-level is absolutely insane with a highly-streamlined missile with a small AOA. If any part of it breaks, it will very quickly be torn apart by drag, and will slow down and fall into the water without being able to use it's control surfaces. I can't seem to find it, but there's a great video from one of the many failures during the initial development of the R-7 ICBM in 1957. The ICBM starts to rotate slightly to one side, then is suddenly torn apart.

I'm primarily familiar with Soviet- and Russian-made missiles, not American ones (outside of what I saw on kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipd6l8Zo3teWmJc.html), or their reaction times. Certainly a mach 6 missile is extremely dangerous due to the short closing times, and as you say it's far too close for comfort. Tracking and engage a salvo of hypersonic missiles before your targeting systems get hit (particularly if this missile had an anti-radiation seeker) is a very difficult technical challenge - I was commenting that if you are able to get a number of maneuverable missile out of it's launcher and provide it with proper tracking, and certainly if you get a hit, that it will stop the incoming missile.

Interesting story. It was 2003-2004 when I was asked to consult on a Phalanx CIWS upgrade. As I am not an American citizen I consulted from the sidelines, so to speak, with a companion at Parker Hannifin, whom I was working for at the time, with clearance was asked to be the point man under my guidance you might say. He comes back from the initial meetings and tells me that the ´upgrade´ was to change out Mannesmann Rexroth servo-valves for Parker Hannifin units. Having begun my career with Rexroth I knew well that they had, and still have, the best servos in the business. The whole thing did not make sense to me. Why would you switch out such critical servos with an inferior product? Just did not make sense. After a bit more prodding the real reason came out, the Rexroth servos are made in Germany while the Parker units are made in the US. Who cares? I said, after all we are allies, not to mention brothers. One of the program managers said, ´yes, today but tomorrow is another story´. In other words, the scum at the State Dept. knew the world would find itself in the state it does today where old friends might become enemies and controlling the supply-chain takes precedence over performance. Compound this with the non-existant engineering expertise at Raytheon, at that time, and the Phalanx system fell another rung on the ladder. Your ranking, BTW, is probably no too far from the truth.

Why worry about a product that is going to be replaced anyway? Furthermore, you state that the people at the state department are "scum" because they did not want to outsource a vital military component to a foreign power. If that makes them scum in your mind you are not very military minded and thus was a poor choice to hire you as a consultant. As far as I am aware, the system managed to shoot down artillery shels durring the Falklands war, and durring initial trials, when this kind of accuracy was not really yet common amongs missile system. I'm partial to the CIWS/Phalanx system because I was a tech that worked on it. As much as I love the CIRam you don't have to wait between launch sequence to engage multiple targets. With the Phalanx it keeps shooting till it is out of ammo. Destroy one target and without missing a beat you are engaging the next Target then the next one and then the next one. Rinse and repeat till all threats are neutralized.

was wondering. what if the incoming threat was a 16" solid shot from an Iowa class ship? Will the good old battle wagons once again find a place on bounding main?

I was wondering the same thing. once-fired, this dumb projectile from a 16" cannon doesn't rely on a guidance system.

@@thaboomer53 too bad that before the "dumb projectile" won't get ever shot since the ship would be taken down by a swarm of missiles from well.beyond it's range

Yes the early Sea wolf was good but not for the ranges it was used, mainly designed for high up bombers, but at least we have learnt now, with sea viper and ceptor with phalanx and goal keeper mixed in.

Actually part of the problem for HMS Sheffield was that there were two frigates rapidly manoevering and the rear one (HMS Sheffield) was targeted as a result the HMS Sheffield radar system was for a short but critical time period ineffective. As a result HMS Sheffield could not get a lock to destroy the attacking aircraft or missile. There is a video about this and more recently the MOD has released information under the 35 year rule. There were other issues as well and there seems to have been a considerable cover-up. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/oct/15/revealed-full-story-behind-sinking-of-falklands-warship-hms-sheffield. That said some of the officers with way more experience elsewhere have stated that the real problem was that the other frigate crossed in front of HMS Sheffield at precisely the wrong moment and nobody could have predicted that HMS Sheffield was going to be attacked from that direction at precisely that time.

You mean HMS Coventry. Sheffield was hit by an Exocet earlier in the conflict due to a series of errors that added up to catastrophe

Its because of the falklands modern CWIS systems came into being. It pretty much set the basis for modern CWIS doctrine. In theory there were some decent systems like Sea Wolf and Sea Cat. But this was the first conflict where they had been used with real world situations and opponents on any notable scale. As such; it was not having them then which meant today every man and his dog wants one.

Fascinating. Now we are in 2020, there are no doubt some new players in the CIWS arena, but the the threat has changed in that we now have offensive low speed drones, swarm technology missile warheads and Iranian fast boats that attack in a pack (should that be “shoal”?). Dealing with multiple threats at multiple ranges and speeds will be a challenge for most systems, except for the big daddy Russian one, of course.
