Another great review, thanks. My less elaborate testing showed exactly the same results. Something I wanted to add in favour of the TCL, however, is using it as a minimalistic portrait set-up for (bright) daylight shooting, where the combination of f2, ND filter, leaf shutter and high sync fill-flash gives really great results, which would require a fair bit of gear to emulate with the other lens combinations. Combined with the X100F I found that the images were a bit too soft for this use, but now with the V the centre resolution is sufficient, I think, specially for JPEG shooters, as a tiny bit of centre softness in portraits is not that unwelcome (the corner softness is not an issue in that situation, but rather gives you a bit of 'resolution vignetting'). Maybe a topic for another video! Another advantage of using the lens attachments is of course the complete weather sealing you get for the X100V, and I find exchanging the WCL/TCL adaptors also less stressful than exchanging lenses in difficult outdoor situations as I don't have to worry about the sensor getting impacted by dust, rain, salt-spray ...

I have a TCL-X100 that I use on my X100F occasionally. Last year I modded it by gluing a tiny magnet inside the mount to act as the version II. It takes some testing to find the right spot for the tele indication and it is possible to make it indicate as the wide converter if you are not careful. The magnet has to be sufficiently thin to not interfere with the mount.

I really enjoyed it after seeing the review and experiencing the TCL with portrait photography on the X100V firsthand. It does a lot better than XF 35f/2.0, at least under my experience. Thanks man. This was the review I was looking for. One question: is there like a lens correction setting in LR or C1 that corrects the pincushioning of the TCL? That would make it a lot more usable. (I'm really hoping I can get the X100V to take portraits in my spare time with the TCL without feeling like I'm just wasting good photos :-) )

Great review as always and the one I'm looking for cos I already have the 23 1.4, I just decided that I would want to get my hands on a V and would want to go for the silver but I'm too worried about the wear and tear of this paint. Can you give me your thoughts and how your silver V is holding up after some time of use from scratches and dents? There is a well-known "hack" to glue small magnets into the conversion lenses to let the camera autodetect them, which turns on correction. For the benefit of this pixel peeping comparison, it's of course better to look at the uncorrected image because a correction algorithm can't create information where there is none.

Interesting and I geeked out on the whole video. However if (really when) I buy the 100V I am not gonna be buying it to carry around extra lenses. If I wanted to do that I would just get the X Pro 3 and change lenses to whatever I want to use. It is good to see that the 100V is as excellent as it is. I suspect that my talent would be the limiting factor in either scenario. Thanks for the video.

Hi, thanks for the video. Does the optical finder on the x100v show the frames when wcl or tcl are attached? Because if not the usability on the x-pro3 would be better, since we're talking of cameras that make their OVF a big selling point. Thanks.

That is a lot of distortion on TCL, did fuji really left it like that or did you possibly not choose the converter setting from the menu? I did test that feature, but it feels gimmicky. I can't imagine when this would make more sense than shooting in raw and cropping in post, or even just cropping the JPG. It doesn't improve the image quality, it's literally a digital crop, and you can't do it whilst shooting in raw at all. Additionally, you can't map the functionality to a button. I could see the value if you could crop similar to how you can change the aspect ratio, but still shoot in raw. That would allow you to compose within the crop. But currently, it feels worthless to me.

Great video - nice to see a direct comparison. One thing I was wondering though - do you happen to be able to procure a WCL-X70 adapter lens? I've picked one up for my X100V, and find it quite handy. Whilst it doesn't have the magnets inside to tell the X100V that it's a wide adapter, you can flip this in the settings. From my tests it makes makes the X100V shoot at the (FF) equivalent of about 25mm, and otherwise it seems pretty good on IQ. My tests are no where as detailed as yours.

Thanks for another great video. Have been following your channel for a while. I bought a x100v five days ago. I am a little concerned with the performance of the lens and was wondering if I might not have a good copy. The problem is that my other camera is a Sony A7riii and maybe I am expecting too much from it. When comparing the detail I get from my Sony 35mm f1.8 at f2 to the x100v at f2, there is literally no comparison - the Sony is so much sharper and has much greater contrast (raw file comparison). I find the x100v at f2 soft in comparison. I would hate to keep it if it's a bad copy. Would be grateful for any advice.

I always had this question to myself, thanks for making a video for it. As a hobbyist I'm using xpro3 with 18,23/2,35/2. IMO these two cameras are also built for aesthetics so if 35 is one of your favorite focal length then the xpro option is a no brainier because the TCL kills the look of the x100 :)

@InsideSomething "𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘊𝘓 𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘹100" If your biggest concern is aesthetics, I can agree with you. However, the X100/TCL combo has some distinct advantages over the X-Pro and 35mm F2. System size being a big one. While the X100V/TCL combo approaches the X-Pro/35 f2 in size by itself, a smaller and more complete system can be put together with the X100 series of cameras. The reason is the built in ND filter and more importantly the X100's leaf shutter. There is no need to carry around screw on ND filters for long exposures(landscapes) and no need for HSS if adding flash(outdoor portraits in bright conditions). The tiny in-built flash becomes INCREDIBLY powerful and a compact flash such as the Godox v350/Flashpoint Li-Ion Zoom Mini can easily match a full size speedlight on the X-Pro once you pass its 1/250 sync speed(not uncommon outdoors). I can pack my X100S, TCL, a capable lighting kit(2x Zoom Mini's, Rouge Flashbender, gels, Canon TTL cable) and ancillary gear(batteries, card wallet, bongo ties/Nano Clamp for placing speedlights) all in a rather small Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 25i shoulder bag with a little room to spare. If you're strictly a 'natural light' photographer, or only shoot in controlled spaces(such as a studio or indoors), obviously the X-Pro will be a better option but so would any interchangeable lens camera. If you regularly find yourself outdoors and needing to add light, don't discount the capabilities of an X100 series camera. You'd be missing out.
@InsideSomething
@InsideSomething 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhill9591 Great points Jimmy. I actually had the xpro2 and x100f before but decided on downsizing to one body and went with the xpro3. Size wise the x100 is smaller, but I like the handling on the xpro more and both systems fits into my peak design 5L sling. What I miss most is the silent shutter and built in ND filter. I don't use flash so it doesn't bother me. It is good that Fuji is giving us options as different systems can fit different users.

Thank you for the great Video! What i would have been really interested in would be a comparison in terms of image quality of the 23 f2 on the x-t3 and the x100v. Especially in close distance. I really like to shoot close distance stuff and specs wise it seems the x100v can even get closer than the interchangeable f2 which i own. Very interested in the 100v. My idea was to sell my beloved xf 23 f2, because i could take the x100v into the rain and also sell the 27 pancake, because it then is obsolet for me - to have some cash as a starting point :) But can the new lens keep up with the xf 23 f2? I know (and you already said it) you can't test everything. If you could do a comparison on the closest distance of the 23mm f2 on the xt3 or xpro3 and the x100v, which would be at about 22cm and then on top also a shot at the closest focus distance of the x100v ... that would be awesome to have a look at the results ... Or if not possible, could i kindly ask you to just tell me what you think: Is the lens of the x100v better, on par, worse than the xf23 f2 at the minimum focus distance and overall? Anyway thank you again for this great video and the ones before - thanks and keep up with your good stuff!!! I really enjoy it!!! Greetings

Oh I've owned and shot with the 23 f2 and directly compared it to the 23 1.4 in a side by side, detailed comparison. There is no way the 23 f2 is sharper (when you factor close focus and wide open) than the 23 1.4, but the good news is that the difference is extremely subtle. There is a live conversation between Zack Arias and Matt Brandon where Zack is giving a very good example on that subject. The talk is a good one on x100v in general. Just search in youtube “A LIVE conversation with photographer Zack Arias about the Fujifilm x100v.” + the channel of Matt Brandon.

Thanks for making this. Actually looking at the X100V vs Ricoh GRIII. I'm more familiar with the Fuji system and I have an affinity for the aesthetics and and the OVF shooting experience. Do you think that the TCL weakness are exacerbated by the fact that the conversion lens was designed for the previous gen lens of the X100 series? I don't mind. softness in the corners, but that pincushioning was pretty intense.
@AndrewGoodCamera
@AndrewGoodCamera 4 жыл бұрын
No I think it's probably worse on the prior generation, honestly. But didn't have one to directly compare. And actually, the pincoishoning is not hard to correct in post. I believe it is corrected automatically with the TCL II (I was using the I).

Is the x100v weather resistant with the WCL/TCL?
@AndrewGoodCamera
@AndrewGoodCamera 4 жыл бұрын
Not officially. I thought that it was, but they only officially claim it is with the filter adapter and filters. But when I look at the differences between these converter lenses and those filters, they seem about the same. I'd trust these conversion lenses to tighten things up for general bad weather. Wouldn't push it though.

I agree, focus accuracy is more important than IQ. My order of preference is Ergonomics -> Consistency -> Image quality. If I feel the overall camera lens package is too front heavy, I lose interest in working my shot, and I am not as nimble/ confident. "Consistency", relates to if a lens performs as expected most/ all the time and without my having to adjust my shooting for a specific gear/ lens. This is the realm of AF consistency, Field Curvature, focus marking calibration etc. Finally, IQ. When all the photographic stars align, what is the optical sharpness and color rendition, CA and coma. Most optical IQ issues can be mitigated en-post, but if you miss focus, that's it.

I did.And bought an X100F 1,5 year ago and never going back. I have the TCL II en WCL II lenses, and only use the TCL on a city trip. It's not as sharp as top line lenses but its very very good. And when I print my travel and family pics in a book the colors are amazing and sharpness top notch! I love this small camera!

I can echo your findings with the TCL on the X100F...I've used it for publication while travelling and found that in the f4 - f8 range it still provided publishable quality. I love the close focus test with the WCL on the V...this is critical for me..I loved the size/weight with the body and two converters on the F. Still waiting for my V...this video was pure gold and perfectly done...thank you. I heard a rumor that another converter might be coming - an 18mm equiv...??
@AndrewGoodCamera

I had not heard that rumor. Though I have heard of some people putting the x-70's WCL on it for a 24mm equivalent. Haven't tried it myself but likely will.

About to go on a trip, I'm tempted to carry only my X100V. I once managed, last century, two weeks in Italy with two M bodies _(one for Color, another for B&W)_ and 4 lenses: 28, 35, 50 & 75; the catch was bountiful. The X100V is enticing me to go with just the camera, the WCL and use the digital conversion for tighter framing. Have you ever compared the TCL (hineous, heavy contraption that you must go to a procession of screwing steps to affix and then reverse), and the digital pseudo zoom via the Digital Conversion menu? It would save me sometime in the last days before boarding. TIA, keep on the good work!

As one of the few people who seem to like the 27mm pancake, I would love it if X100V 23mm F2 was sold as a pancake lens. But my guess is that it couldn't be done technically.

The greatest PITA (and IMHO) goof Fuji commited with these adapters, is that they didn't think this beforehand and developed the cameras with a bayonet mount up-front. Maybe even using the greedy filter-cum-shade contraption. I own the pair (V I) but other than testing them didn't use them much _in the real world._ They make me remember my Father in Law's Retina IIIc (delicate piece of poor, albeit fine German engineering) that harbored a Wide Angle and a Tele adapters, not unlike the ones Fuji have (but worse, much worse!). However, the kind of optical refinement that Fuji invested in their converters is notable, even if the results are inevitably poor. In any case they're quantum leaps ahead of the idiocies Chinese manufacturers still make and offer for all kind of cameras. Whenever possible use the "digital zoom" or even crop and doctor in Photoshop. You will save money and grief. 😉
