You guys had some great followup questions from my last video about the use of conversion lenses with the Fujifilm X100VI, so I did some more digging and this video is the result of my digital photography excavation. Hope the info in here helps!

Very helpful. Waiting for mine. Love the compression with the 50ml conversion lens punched into the 70ml in camera crop mode. That will make for some sweet portraits.

This is great thank you - main point I've taken away is that the WCL is useful as you can crop in but not out, and the size is more appealing than the TCL. I think the size bit is important as it's part of the spirit of the X100 series

For web, and even small prints, 10mb work just fine. Have done it multiple times with my A7III in crop mode. And now we also have gigapixel and Lightroom enhance... resolution is definitely not an issue on any camera these days

It "was super useful' - thank you. I have just bought the vi and WCL. Took them to Switzerland/Alps last week and left my XT5/lenses at home. The X100vi performed well, including with the Fuji weather kit in some very snowy conditions. I used the 50 & 70 crops a lot. Whether the crops are more useful than cropping in post I have yet to experiment with; any view on this aspect?

That sounds awesome. Hope you had a blast. If I could only have one of the conversion lenses. I’d pick the WCL. I shoot in raw + JPEG and process the raw (and crop In post) if I need to print bigger than a 4x6. So in that sense the RAWs are super useful.

Such helpful video! Q: do the crop modes crop the RAW files or only the JPG/HIFs? I’m waiting for my preorder still and already bought the TCL.

Crops are not recorded on the RAWs which stay at full 40 megapixels. The crops are only on the JPEGs.

thanks again. I processed that in Lightroom, but really, I just used the Classic Chrome fujifilm profile that you can still apply in Lightroom, and just adjusted the contrast and white balance. so far, I am a big fan of Fuji's color profiles. I used to have to massage the sony files so much just to get to that point, and it only took me a minute with the x100vi files.

Is that a Model P Squarehood? Does it interfere when looking through the viewfinder? Would love to know as there isn't many videos out on that Model P and the X100VI.

It’s the Haoge LH-X200S Square Metal Lens Hood… I don’t use viewfinder in optical mode. But it does block it.

I have both of these lens conversions which i got for a steal way back when i bought my 100X T. I moved to the F and have now traded to the VI. I have hardly ever used the Tele lens, the wide has been used at gigs when I'm pressed against the stage. Now with the bump in sensor i can't see me ever using it the tele.

How does the TCL affect the bokeh? crop mode vs TCL - is the bokeh the same or is the bokeh on the TCL smoother? I was not able to spot any differences in your video. Thanks

It’s a bit smoother on the TCL. There’s a slight difference but not a lot.

I finally have my pre-ordered X100VI. I do also own a Sony A7 IV. My question is: Does the Fuji X100 VI have the Soft Skin Effect, like the Sony A7IV???? Please can you check on it? I can't find it on the X100VI.

I think at the price point and the size of the converters, an xt-5 or similar starts making a lot more sense. You can switch a lens faster than screw a converter on or off. Great video. You put a fair bit of work into it.

I see what you mean. I think the biggest thing about the x100vi is that right out of the box you can just go out and shoot. You don’t really need anything else. It’s kind of the perfect point and shoot with additional pro features at your disposal if you need it.

I get so much angst choosing among lens options for cameras. It's like choosing between 178 kinds of toothpaste or shampoo. So I usually end up with a fixed lens camera. These adapters make a nice compromise. You still get focal length options but on a very limited scope. Subbed!

totally. I think that's the beauty of the x100 series. stick to 1 focal length and simplify the process. I think it is neat that you have the option of getting to a wider or more normal view if that's more of your cup of tea.

No drop in resolution, these magnify or demagnify the image from the standard lens without cropping although I'm not sure if it has any effect on the light transmission.

Hi, if I understand properly: using native lens with digital crop from menu, drops down the image quality from 40mp to 20 and 10mp. But if I use external tcl and wcl of 28 and 50mm, the 40mp will be same for taken images. Is that correct?

In addition. You can still use the crop modes when you have either the TCL or WCL and it will give you two additional tighter focal lengths for each lens but you’ll lose resolution on those crop modes. But you don’t have to use the crop modes if you want to keep the 40 mp resolution.

Thank for this video. I was wondering about the effect of the TCL with cropping. I’m impressed you have two X100VI bodies. I preordered on the 20th and B&H sent a message the 1st batch of bodies has been sent. The rest of us on the waiting list will have to wait an unknown period before our bodies are sent to us. If you get the WCL-x70 it is also compatible with the X100 and brings you to about 26mm, the only trade-off is you need to set the wide-conversion setting manually (or modify with magnets) and it's a bit larger and heavier but generally cheaper than the wcl-x100.

Basically, you have just shown rhe merits of an interchangeable lens system over the x100 and the limitated advantages of rhe converter lenses beyond rhe focal length of the WCL which otherwise isnt available. A great advantage of interchangeable lenses is the different depths of field and different optical quelities and characteristics. And they arent screw in but quick release. All absent from the converters. I do have the WCL-x100ii basically because it was free for me. Main reason I grabbed it was that I've shifted from favouring 23 to 18 anyway. I'd actually hoped rhe x100vi would shift to 18mm to take advantage of the 40MP sensor. I wouldnt have paid €240 for it though - thats what my fanatsic 16 2.8 lens cost! But I definitely won't be taking it on and off. I guess there might be people in the same boat with 23 vs 35, but thats what thevl digital TC is for. I'd say anyone considering the x100vi for the first real camera or first x100 experience and already looking at both converters is comsidering the wrong camera. Better an x-t30 or x-t40 in the summer with some compact lenses. I'd only recommend the x100 for someone that already enjoys 23mm and is happy with that focal length semi exclusivelt. Or maybe has a second camera in the bag with a tele attached.

I agree for the most part with you. the x100 seems like its geared users who are mostly happy with the 35mm full-frame equivalent. I think they wisely chose to stick to that, because its supposed to feel like a "high-end" point-and-shoot, and they achieved that. "Most" people will be happy enough with the lens. The TCL & WCL, I believe is supposed to be for users like you and me who want more flexibility. But that will be for a minority I think. The more I use the x100vi, the more I enjoy keeping it with the standard lens, without any converters. I feel good though that I have the TCL & WCL if ever the time calls for it.

The blur in the background is always the same, no matter with or without converters. Neither they nor the crop can really replace a real lens of the same focal lens in that respect.

If you look at the sample shots with TCL compared to the standard lens, there's a slight change in bokeh character, I think it's not the same thing that would get if it was a true 50mm f/2, but it's definitely different than the native 35mm f/2 bokeh, kind of a half way solution, I think.

To fix this, click on view settings, and then select anything higher than 480p.

Crop and FOV are different things. You lose all the lens fall off and character using a crop.

Why do presenters fail to point this out for less experienced photographers. The crop features as well as the 2 conversion lens only change the FOV, but not the DOF. You only get the DOF of the 23mm lens regardless of the crop or conversion lens used. A great presentation otherwise.

It would technically change DOF with the conversion lens simply because you'd be standing in a different spot to compose. DOF is affected by distance to the subject.

Hype is relative. So is cost. if you can name at least one camera that can give you 40mp sensor, compact f/2 35mm equivalent pancake lens, a hybrid viewfinder, IBIS, internal ND, on-camera flash, and an all metal housing, for cheaper than the X100vi, then I would be more likely to agree with you.

I just got it, this camera is just for people who don't know shit about photo/video, think that the camera does it all for them and the most important thing is IT LOOKS COOL AND VINTAGE. "the camera punches in" - it's called a crop ffs and why the actual fuck would you praise the 40mp sensor if you're gonna crop it to 50%?!? But hey, if that makes these people happy, I'm happy for them.
