Developmental milestones are a valuable tool. When used properly. But often they are misused, and it just adds unnecessary stress and anxiety that no parent needs to experience.
This video walks you through what I wish all parents new about developmental milestones - why they're important, when they're useful (and when they're not), and how to use them in a way that's actually helpful.
Hopefully after watching this one it helps you look at developmental milestones a little differently, and more importantly, helps alleviate some of that unnecessary concern if it's something you've experienced.

I keep telling myself “milestones don’t exist”, otherwise it would be too painful. My baby has Kabuki syndrome, had her first open heart surgery at 8 days old; she’s hypotonic, tube fed, has hospital visits with half a dozen departments, waiting for her second heart surgery and doing weekly therapies (physio, OT, speech for feeding). I don’t care if she’s 9 months old with the milestones of a 5 months old. To me she’s a hero. She’s been through literal hell since birth and yet she’s curious and keeps enjoying life. Whatever she’ll achieve developmentally, it will be because we worked really hard for it and, to me, this means way more than any comparison to any other kid.

My sister is a nurse and she said sometimes when a baby is so loved…families tend to carry them and do things for them more so they take longer to walk.

For me it's just been fascinating wondering & observing how her baby brain has progressed. At 1 & 1 mth, I do believe shes starting to understand causing pain. 😅 She smacked me & i exaggerated my response. Usually I think she can tell behind my silly acting... but I've been trying to stay consistent. Lol, she was acting oblivious eating crumbs off the bed. & When I didn't stop, this baby really tried "throwing" her bottle at me. When I drank it for too long, she wanted to go back at tugging my hair. & I really think she stopped herself like oh. That's not gonna stop mommy from being upset either. When I "got over it" I just nodded my head at her like thx! Good bubba 👍🏻, & I feel better now. & She smiled like i no right?! It does work & yw. Hahaha getting a baby to share is the biggest form of flattery. I mean she's my baby & does tons of precious sweet affectionate things but her sharing is like I don't actually imagine her wanting to share that much w/ anyone else.

My niece was able to play on my sister and brother in laws intelligence until she was about 19 months old, I was in disbelief! They argued with me they she couldn’t walk and she didn’t for them until I physically went over there and told her to STOP! 🤦🏽‍♀️ I still to this day can’t believe how hard they argued with me about that girl not being able to walk for that long. She’s about to be 21 next month and I honestly believe if I wouldn’tve made her stop acting, that they would still to this day be carrying her around.😒 Ridiculous!!

Moms are in charge of worrying 😆 One thing that helped me was to look at multiple areas of development. Some kiddos develop quickly with mobility, but not language. Even in school now my 10 year old excels in math, but struggles in reading. We all have strengths so we celebrate those often. ❤ Thanks for another great video!

My oldest was cruising at 25 weeks, walking by 10 months. Her fine motor skills were off the charts. She didn't start to talk until 2. She's 17 an amazing artist and Autistic with SPD and an expressive and language disorder. She still can't sit still, I believe her "advanced " motor skills were due to SPD. From day one of bringing her home, if she wasn't moving she was screaming.

My daughter is 15 months -14 months corrected. She has a rare chromosone deletiom with hypotonia and has just in the last few weeks shes fully crawling and sitting up unasisted! So proud of how far she has come, her language was limited as she had a cleft pallete, she can now bable 5 words since her repair 4 weeks ago, her physio has always told us to always comprare our daughter to herself to really see her progress. Thanks for bringing this topic up :)

Doctors say my son has hypotonia. At 5 months he rolling on his side. He's been doing that for about a two months now. Sometimes he rolls onto his tummy but one hand is always stuck underneath. He goes straight to sleep when I give him tummy time, unless it's on my stomach. I just allow him to be himself. I'm not stressing him nor myself. He goes to nuero, physio, eye, and bunch of other clinics. I love him just the way he is and will love him the same way as he continues to meet "his" milestones whenever time that is.

Sometimes I think some parents get caught up in the comparison games even with all of their own kiddos. So something to keep in mind too as parents is your firstborn may hit milestones at certain points while your second and on will hit them at a completely different point. The best way I heard this described is “you’re a first time parent with each kid”. This was a great video to be reminded that milestones are ranges, not pin point marks. Thanks for uploading!

Great video! My daughter is 17 months old now, and I feel like it’s so much harder to know how she’s doing with language development compared to other milestones! It seems much more complicated. She sometimes says ‘I got it’, recently started saying neigh, and jokingly says dada when I ask her to say mama lol. Of course some other random words, but it’s hard to keep track.But most of the time she’s just making noises in a conversational tone with me.

this is so important! my daughter is really cautious, so she started walking without support a bit later than I thought she'd be ready to, but when she finally started, she was just so good at it already. Some kiddos fall 20 times over the span of 5 mins, and they're fine, mine falls once, and won't walk for the next week lol 😂but on the other side, she's really good at communicating and she gets along with others quite well for her age, and she's really good at activities where she needs to sit still and concentrate. kids are just different, just as adults are. not all adults are scientists, or athletes, etc.

Babysitter/nanny here! I love milestones. I would watch a large range of babies and children and they were so helpful in finding new ideas of ways to play with them. Not in a "omg you don't know how to do this yet?!" kind of way but more like "oh, I bet you're going to like this game now!" I can easily see how parents will start to compare and feel bad, but if you use the tool the right way it can give you new and fun ideas of ways to interact with your little ones. It was also helpful to look back at the last milestones to see if any were missed, and then to look ahead to see if they were ready to try some harder challenges in different areas. Usually children will zoom through one area and lag in another. Give them time and don't rush it. ❤

such an important video, Emma! Thanks so much. So many parents are nowadays almost forced to compare everything about their baby. Statistics are definitely helpful in certain cases, but people need to realize that every baby has its own pace.

My three are all adults now, but they all walked "late" - between 13 and 15 months. All the moms bragged about their babies walking at their first birthday. By 18 months all the "toddlers" could run, including mine. It made zero difference. Watching them run, you could not in any way pick out who might have walked early or "late." I got stressed over nothing with the first. By my middle and youngest I knew better!

Oh, I have this urge to write about walking. I got sick of questions "is he walking yet", "do you help him to learn to walk". I tried to explain couple of times that learning to walk is a process, that first a baby should stand with support, then begin to take a couple of steps with support, then cruise...and it's all walking! People just didn't understand, it's like everyone has this vision, as my friend joked, of a baby standing, shaking herself - and possibly going to look for work or something 😆 So when I said something like "yeah, he's cruising along furniture", people looked concerned, said something "oh, it's okay, he'll get there". And that were people with their own kids, they had an opportunity to watch them grow, they must know something, I guess... That was soooo frustrating. And, by the way, my son began to walk independently at around a year and a couple of weeks, so he's basically and uninterestingly normal 😆

Couldn't have asked for better timing ! My baby is 6.5 months now (5.5 months corrected) and he cant yet roll from back to tummy. He hates tummy time so he's a pro at rolling from tummy to back. Everyone who sees him calls him lazy and it really hurts. He was born premature and IUGR and he gained weight quite rapidly .. even his head control took a while to achieve though it is still a little wobbly. I can't help but worry and it's causing sleepless nights haha

I really hope this video helped you stop worrying and get some sleep. Also rolling is a skill bubs can learn all the way up to 7 months (corrected age) so he still has plenty of time to achieve this skill.

In Germany you have to go to check ups to your doctor. He will tell you if there is any problem. He is checking some special things for example is you baby knowing where is top and ground. But many parents are scared and stess their child. Your video is great because it tells there is no issue if you baby slower.

I see alot of parents on social media forcing their children to hit milestone before they naturally would at their age. I was born in the 80's and I am sure all of these milestones were not a thing back then and I turned out fine. My baby is 12 weeks old this week and I am ok with her taking her time with her milestones. I know she will get there eventually 😊.

My son did also from about 2 weeks old and then stopped a few weeks later, he then couldn’t roll until about 4 months old. My advise would be to keep encouraging your baby to roll! I didn’t and I think my wee boy forgot how to do it. :)

This is true, my baby walked at 18 months. Everyone we met, everyone we spoke to, all told stories about how their babies started at 9-12 months. We did everything from the start, nothing worked, she was taking a few steps but refusing to walk, until she saw a same age girl on a playdate walking, the next day she walked. I want to add that our baby is extremely curious, she wanted to try everything, see everything, but refused to walk. She is 2 years and 3 month and she is not talking, the only words she says is no (which she started a week ago) up, mama, dada ,and her sisters nickname, but Her cognitive development, communication has been extremely advanced since she could understand everything around her, which was pretty early, even pediatrics were surprised. She understood and understands long sentences, instructions, we never used baby language or kid friendly language, she understood and did it, she speaks to us with her hands and sounds. I think that is why she is refusing to talk because we understand her lol we have no problem understanding her. We have been talking to her since she was born. When i used to tell the doctors she is communicating with us at the age of 4 months and we understand her and she understands us, they thought i was crazy. she also loves problem solving, challenge and learning new things. Refusing the potty though. she is still in diapers, we tried 3 times so far with potty, we have to wait again.

Can you give an update! She seems a lot like my 1 year old! She is climbing stares and gets onto my bed by herself but refuses to walk! She also still hasn’t said her first world yet! She understands a lot tho! She would give me a book and asks me to read it she would also ask for the breast by posting her hand on my chest she copies whatever I do when I play with her! I think she is smart but won’t talk! I guess she is just lazy or something

@@basmajalloul967 my baby will turn 3 end of april she is talking not like us adults, but she is def saying sentences as a toddler, we understand her.. She was 2 years 6 month she started saying more words. It was fast too, rapid change. So we spoke to her as adults, no baby language, we talked to her as if she is 5, we asked questions, but we were describing what happened, what is going on, like where is her sister, she would point and say up, we would say that in a full sentence. So did so and so went upstairs? do you want to call her say, so and so are you coming, or come, so she had a lot of vocabulary and sentences and the rapid change boom, one week she is saying a few words the next a sentence. the secret is basically talking to her full sentences as if you are uploading data what she is supposed to say, they are like a sponge for sure, their brain is like an empty program you are filling it with words and sentences they remember i was surprised. We had adult convos, she responds to us when we thought she didnt understand she understood way over her age, sentences and words, just because she is not saying doesnt mean she doesnt have it in her brain :)

My pediatrician told me Friday My son was delayed. He is 10 months old and not crawling but doing everything else. She made me cry. She said he probably is not stimulated enough but I spend a lot of time on stimulation and physical therapy. She said I am probably doing something wrong....I am sad😢 what can I do more.

Mine crawled on hands at 6 months. He was already doing a plank at 5 months. How i wish it would be a bit later. He is hyperactive, very adventurous and barely naps. Now he is crawling he is a whole different specie. 😅 I am exhausted 😩

A floor mat or several blankets with soft toys worked well for my Baby... the only entertainment item we eventually got was a rope and strings I tied under our table to hang toys from, so our Baby could lay and reach for it or kick the toys when on the back, or look at them during tummy time.

This channel has helped me a lot as a first time mom. My daughter is 4 months now and will be 5 months next week. Shes growing fast. I love that she tries to do things on her own and sometimes she doesn't like to be assisted😅 (i know because if i try she cries) I put her in a sitting position and she removes my from her body and tries to remain sitted by supporting herself by balancing her hands at 180° or holding them down to her side. Am really eager and patient to see her getting through the milestones

Glad I watched this. Sometimes I feel horrible im not naturally gifted with the ability to conversate with my son as much as I'd like to.... but I expected as much considering thats how I am with any person... and I always worry in the back of my head it will have a negative impact on him... hopefully ill have one less thing to stress about. Hopefuply.. ill probably still loose some sleep over it but so far thats at least 50% of the patenting experience for me: always worried im not doing enough or the wrong thing.. and its only year 1 lol 😂 as if being a parent isn't hard enough without your inner voice toying with you. 🙃🤐

Hi Emma and thank you so much for your videos. My little one turned 4 months today ay he can roll easily from back to tummy, holds his head pretty well but can't turn back on his back, is he gonna master that skill by himself when he is ready or should i help him out?

No worries at all. It's so good that your little one has leant to roll over and holds his head well. In regards to learning how to roll from tummy to back. This is a skill that I would expect he will learn to master with time. You can help him become familiar with the feel of rolling from his tummy to back by rolling him back onto his back when he starts to fuss after being on his tummy - instead of picking him up from the ground while he is on his tummy.

My baby is prematurely born at 31 week, he has never crawl but love sitting up despite unable to sit up independently. He is now 8 months with due date. I was worried that he hasnt sat independently yet, but your video has lessen my worries. My baby is very interactive and likes to play with us rather than toys. Paediatian has said to us that we have to count on corrected date with some of his development. I am waiting for the day. ❤

I was an extremely average baby who hit milestones exactly at the median age when they were "due". My S.O. on the other hand was developing slowly, barely walking unassisted at exactly 19 months. However, his older sister was an early walker, while my brother was a late one as well. It'll be interesting to see at what age our own babies end up starting to walk!

Hi Emma thank you for this video. My daughter will be 8 months in a few days and has rolled both way only a handle of times. She also hstes tummy time and will get frustrated and just lay her head down and suck her fingers. She can sit unassisted and stands with support but doesn't crawl and isn't babbling, just a few single dad sounds. Should I be concerned?

In my opinion, there is no need to be concerned, your babygirl is doing great. My girl sat down independently at 3 months old if I placed her down, but just started rolling over at 10months old. Although she could cruise around holding things. I say she is just developing each milestone and not falling the normal process of roll before sitting.... 😅

I would bring this up with your pediatrician. This sounds a lot like our daughter at 8 months. She’s 11 months now and in physical and speech therapy. We started trying to intervene months ago but it takes a long time to get scheduled for these services. If you’re concerned for your daughter, get the ball rolling now. She may be caught up in a few months, and then you can just cancel all of the appointments.

I usually described my son as hitting milestones on the late end of normal. This was so hard because I was expecting a child who hit milestones early (huge pride issue on my part). But, all of that changed with talking. Then, he was truly behind. He was 2 and could say 8 words. Poor kid would just lay on the ground and cry because he was so frustrated. He wanted to talk, he just couldn't. Speech therapy changed all of our lives. He's finally able to express what he needs and wants and we have way fewer of those frustrated meltdowns now. We have meltdowns over more typical toddler things now 😅. Anyway, all that to say get your child into interventions early if you can. It's not a sign of you failing as a parent, it's a sign of you succeeding in providing what your child needs.

My. son is 15 months and he's standing up and crawling but not walking yet. My first born walked at 10 months. They do have different fathers so genetics might have something to do with it.

My daughter was born 37w2d and had a month nicu time. She only started to army crawl at 8/9months. She has only just started walking this past week at 19m aswell. I think being earlier deffo had a impact

My 4 year old took his first steps at 18 months old but wasn't walking until just before he turned 2yrs old. He still can't talk but he's autistic. My 2nd son started walking at 13 months old. My 3rd son has started to roll around. Kids reach milestones on their own so I'm not worried

When did you find out your son is autistic? Mine is 18 months old and will not respond to his name or simple commands and its so concerning and I hate googling it

@@kylejuelfs6401 we started noticing around 1 years old but were getting told by health visitors that it's too early to tell yet and break him out of it. We're still waiting for a diagnosis from neurodevelopmental behaviour specialist service(previously known as small steps) but support workers, drs and both his nurseries picked up on the fact he shows autistic traits. He's starting school soon so we're worrying about how he's going to handle a new school as he hates new routines

@@kylejuelfs6401when he was about 1 yes old he wouldn't respond to his name still he doesn't half the time. We got a hearing test and he passed it so nothing wrong there. You know you child best so stick with your gut feeling. He spins around in circles and waves his hands when he's happy or excited

Hi dear thanks for the video My baby boy is 8 months and 15 days He is yet to sit or crawl Does not sit for long even with support say only for a min or so Only on lap he sits for 4 mins or so with distractions He rolled over on both sides only in his 7th month Is this a developmental delay ? At this age they do like to do things themselves and can start to get frustrated. In regards to talking, we would be hoping for a few words at this point. Like mum or dad or favourite toy said with purpose (so looking directly at you or the toy when they say the word). In this video I go over some strategies which you can use to encourage her to start talking. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9GjgpOpzr2ddI0.html But if you are concerned, an appointment with a speech and language therapist or speech pathologist would be helpful. They could assess your little one's skills and give you specific strategies. Also it's important to check your daughter's hearing (with a hearing test) as this might be why she is not yet talking.

Mine got all the motor stuff early but his language is quite delayed. He's 21 months and barely talks. Aside from "mama, dada, dog, go" he is essentially non verbal. I see younger kiddos talk more than he does. 😢

That’s great your little one was able to master the motor stuff early. At this age we would be hoping for a few more words (but remember animal noises also count as words). So if you are concerned and able to I recommend you get your little one’s hearing assess (as this might be why they are not speaking as much). If that comes back ok then book an appointment with a speech pathologist (AKA Speech and language therapist) who can assess your little one and give you specific strategies. I wondered about this because my 18 month old can run jump and climb rock walls and such and he knows how to put the right shape through the holes in toys and stuff so he's able but he barely talks he says a word or two and I read to him 15 minutes a day and I talk to him all the time he laughs and won't try to talk people are telling me he's going to be slow but he can open tool boxes undo baby safety latches etc he's physically very able but that's it

He’ll talk when he’s ready. Boys usually begin talking later than girls; however their gross motor skills, like the ones you mentioned, are usually developing at a much faster rate than girls. Your son seems very normal for his age.

It's just my opinion but I think the more important thing is that he understands what you say to him, for example, he can follow easy instructions. Hope you and your little one are doing well and make some progress soon ☺️

It's easy to get used to my baby so I might not always know differences or know what exactly to look for. These vids said play ball w/ her. My baby hasn't been throwing things recently, lol. But that's her fav toy. & It's just an image of baby gently rolling balls. Then there's mine, ow. So, yeah. I'd assume she's intentionally aiming. She walked on her own at 14 mths. But she never held onto anything & didn't use any assisted devices & doesn't like ppl trying to help her. I'm trying to think of 20 specific words but some of em prob r baby versions. But I just def think she knows way more than what she says & I've Been thinking that.

I feel like crying all the time...my daughter is 11 months old can't seat by her own,but without support can seat,can't crawl, atleast never try to crawl by herself,and also she doesn’t have any interest to hold toys or something by hand..all she does is putting fingers in mouth and moves her head side to side...very low weight..that is 6kg...all her basic reports shows normal..pls help me out..tell me something which can motivate me

Hi! I understand you are very concerned about your little one’s development. It might be a bit of a relief to hear that crawling this is a skill bubs can learn anywhere from 8 months to 13 months. So your little one still has plenty of time to master this skill. At this age though we would hope that they could sit up without support. That includes without needing to lean on their hands for support to sit. If your little one is finding this challenging then I recommend you arrange an appointment with a paediatric physiotherapist (AKA physical therapist) as they are the best people to see for gross motor development. I wish you and your little one all the best.

One significant delay I found is language in 12-24 month olds. My suspicion is that we wore masks (at daycare/school). Has there been any study on this? 2 year olds are not talking.

If it’s normal to walk between 9 and 18 months of age, why isn’t that range considered the milestone? Why do websites and KZfaq channels (including yours) talk about 12 months as the milestone? Just tell it like it is and save parents the worry.

I am surprised by this as I always try to provide the range that milestones can be achieved, rather than give a specific month. It’s more helpful to know the range that the milestones can be achieved as this is realistic.

The milestone race is a disgrace All five of my children developed at different stages and one sadly never met any milestone after 6mths and is 16 years old profoundly disabled but we live and love each day we share together. Be careful listening to all these do and donts And for walkers best thing for heart kids , preserves energy and helps pump blood back to lungs, doctors recommend this to us with our heart child who was blue

We, as adults, often compare ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t. Let’s not push that onto our innocent children. They all figure out everything developmentally eventually. If there’s a problem, you’ll notice, but otherwise who cares. Let’s not put societal pressures in them so young. They will have to deal with it so much, later on in life

Why do you want to compare your child first of all? I didn't check this video, but just by the title of it. Don't compare. Your baby will grow on his or her own phase. She or might lag a little or lot, but she or he will all grow up to be a fine young man or a woman.
