As a dog trainer myself, I will admit I have done some mistakes in this video you’ve mentioned, and know I realize what I need to do. Thank you. I am specifically talking about teaching with punishment. Association and punishment. It makes complete sense. The dog becomes confused as to what you’re punishment it for after it has done something wrong, and now it is looking at the blinds but you punish it for looking at the blinds. I’ve been training my own dogs for years and have never been taught or heard this from anyone.

I'm entranced. I have never heard someone talk this way, so realistic. Truthful. Facts. Gets to the point. It's what we need.

You helped me so much with my GSD. I adopted her at 6mo. She was a West German working line Sable. Needless to say, high drive. Being an experienced owner of 2 others I thought it would work out well. It was a journey. We learned a lot. She was an amazing dog. I have never had a better, more loyal companion. Learning to trust was a big issue. Its been 2 weeks since I had to put Jager down. Perianal fistula. She was 4. There is probably another GSD in my future. We learned so much from you. Thank you.

I rescued a German Shepherd almost a year ago. He was previously in a home that created a lot of anxiety for him. Rather than working with him, his previous owners chose to isolate him and crate him for most of each day, while they had two other dogs that were never crated or isolated. That is just silly and it created a very sad situation for him and luckily they decided to reach out to a rescue facility to re-home him in a house with no other dogs. That’s how I got him. He’s a great dog. He is highly reactive to other dogs, people, squirrels, rabbits, whatever, when we’re out on our walks. I just wanted to comment that I’ve learned so much from your videos and some of it I’ve successfully used to help me work through some of my dog’s aggression. I especially agree 100% with you on this video. Genetic predisposition and learned behavior is everything. I also now use a tip from time to time you gave on a previous video on how to gain respect on the leash. My rescue dog walks so much better from just doing that a few times on the leash. He has his moments where he reverts to aggression, as he learned that behavior and finds it satisfying when another dog goes away. Lastly, your other video about knowing exactly what kind of dog you have is totally true. He may never be a dog that plays well with others and I’m ok with that. Just wanted to say I love watching your videos!!! They’re sooooooo helpful!!!

This is such a helpful, educational video. I've only ever gotten dogs after they're grown, so the amount of training I've had to do was pretty minimal (a few house rules, a trick or two). But now that I'm looking at getting younger dog, I've been more concerned about training and socializing them - things I could take for granted with older trained dogs. This is definitely the most helpful video on this topic I've seen - so thank you so much

This was just excellent 👌. I've replayed it like 3 times to just really grasp the concepts. I have a 7 mo old choc lab and I was able to apply some of these insights to behaviors she exhibits and I'll def approach her training different as a result. For instance, she could care less about praise, but is highly motivated by play and/or food. I would love more videos on these topics that take a deeper dive into each - perhaps outlining different approaches when they exhibit different reactions in each quadrant? I hope I'm saying that right :) Thanks for such an amazing resource

You're an excellent dog trainer, and know dogs better than 99%+ Just want to point out some technical psychology...which will probably come off as annoying, sorry if so. You should know that reinforcement is always reinforcing good behavior while punishment is always dissuading from bad behavior. The positive and negative has to do with adding something or taking away something. So positive reinforcement is a treat to reward a good behavior, but negative reinforcement would be removing something that is undesirable to increase a good behavior (which is difficult to do, but a common example is making an animal push a lever to remove a bad sound or stimulus, thereby reinforcing pushing the lever, which is the good behavior). Adding pressure like your example is technically not negative reinforcement. Additionally negative punishment is not withholding something like treats/food, it is technically removing something away that the dog already has. You withholding treats is technically an aspect of positive reinforcement, but if you were to take away a bone a dog was chewing on whenever he growled to protect it, that would technically be negative punishment, removing something positive to get rid of a bad behavior. That is all, thanks again for your great videos!

Wonderful presentation! Learned a ton and I was reinforced on items that I knew or suspected. I especially liked the barking dogs in the background and your demo dog laying behind the lecturer. I also do not use the clicker, I instead used the "kiss sound" which is always with me and my Max always stops, looks at me for the next command.

I def was lured into the positive only for his first year. As you could imagine I have a giant dog that runs, bolts when he wants! I’ve implemented ecollar to balance this.

ahhhh need to wait another year to start getting paid ...Can't wait to be able to purchase your course and train my puppy the right way , went too hard on punishments from 8 weeks to 15 weeks , cuse I didnt know about the importance on house structure so I kept punishing him and now I feel like he is flat on the training even during play and as a malinois that doesn't seem right , hopefully I can still fix our relatioship and bring him up the right way once I get ur material , Thx alot for making it available !!!

I have an 8 mo German Shepherd that I adopted at 6 mo, so learning beyond the positive only training is helping have a well rounded understanding of my Canine. He has some behavioral issues but Im hoping further understanding will aid on how to better cope and alleviate

this really helped, thank you I just had about a year old Lab/Chow mix (he looks mostly like a lab) show up on my doorstep. he is the friendliest guy and someone trained him the basics but he gets really excited when he sees other animals (happy excited but still). Im working with him so I appreciate these videos. It also helps me know what to look for in a trainer as well.

Very good explanation. This topic is bit of an onion for me. Many many layers, and a lot of tears from banging my head against a wall to once and for all, "get it."

anyone who has ever dealt with a doberman or german shepherd or similar dogs understands all this.......easily trained because they are intelligent dogs with a genetic predisposition doesnt mean they are easy.....my doberman was a nightmare until he turned 2 years old and became the perfect dog....large stubborn alpha male tried to dominate me even as a puppy in ways you wouldnt expect......he won far more than I did

As a busy mom I had to rewind a handful of times. This is so interesting. :) I cant agree with you enough...I had a pitbull that had a beautiful disposition but I had a lifelong rule that she could not play with children or women. Im not lying when I used to play tug with her her eyes would do this weird dilation thing...she would zone out. I rehomed her ( not due to her) and suggested that this WONDERFUL canine not be asked to play with children. I hope they listened to the wise advice. BTW she was the only dog I trusted with my sons. Just a beautiful dog but not suitable for a child playmate. Of course both she and my younger son would break the rule sometimes, typically my son, as she was very Obedient and I'd come along and redirect her and stop the playing.
