You hit the nail on so many issues. As long as people use animals to make themselves feel good the animal is very likely to lose, because it is not about what is best for the animal anymore, it is about what keeps the person "feeling good". Thank you for keeping it real Much. Needed. Video.

I used to teach vet techs at Olds College. I taught obedience and dog behaviour to the students who would then practice on the rescues we brought in. I had a similar talk with them starting with “what do you think is the most severe?” I used everything you had as well as a halti. They always put the ecollar as the most severe and the halti as the least. By the end of the talk they understood that it was not the equipment that was abusive but the people who used them. Even halties kill. Great talk Haz. And Dak’s doing great! Thank you!

I use a Dogtra 1900s, and i've had to go up to 140 before. She ran for a rabbit nearly went into the road, and she stopped right in her tracks. I wasn't expecting it since she NEVER chases things as she is a service dog and she is highly trained. If she got hit she would have died and I would have lost the dog I need to live a normal life.

For sure, but apparently it really depends on a dog how much they can feel. And some PEOPLE can't even feel lower than 10 at all. doesnt mean it's the same for a dog tho. So if your dog reacts to lower than 10, then it means they can feel it and it's probably good to start there.

I wish there would be a dog trainer like you around here. As far as I know there is only one dog trainer here in Poland that knows how to use an e-collar PROPERLY. Finding one is nearly impossible, since all the positive only folks would strangle me to death faster than I can say “balanced trainer”. I have a bit of a dog reactive pup. I was looking for a solution. One of the professional positive only trainers I’ve reached also had a reactive dog. Said it took her 3 years to teach her dog not to flip inside out when there is other dogs involved. She was proud that her dog can pass another dog at a 3 meter distance and not go bonkers. 3 YEARS! I was like: I’m outta here, I’m not about to treat my dog like it’s mentally impaired. Im not going to treat myself like I’m mentally impaired. I won’t let my dog go nuts for 3 years, only for it to be a ticking bomb that triggers once an unfamiliar dog is 1 inch too close.... I care too much THIS is what’s hurting the dog. Making a cripple out of our dogs, when all they need is a few clear lines of what to do and what not to do. With positive only training there is no boundaries. Dogs need structure. Positive is just options. I do understand it’s not a one day procedure, everything with dogs takes time, but 3 to 5 years....? I can’t help but think that in reality positive methods don’t really work in situations like these, the dog just gets too old to react 😅 aching joints and all...

I live in Austria, I also did it without dog trainers, first I did it with my GSD, then I did it with my Malinois (still being trained). Not only that, I used e-collar and prong collar, both illegal in my country. Yet, I still opted to use them. Why? It is the best way to train. A dog requires correction, not bribing. All I did was I used videos on the internet and various articles. There are enough to find. Most of them agree with each other. It is still a learning process, not every dog reacts at the same speed to it. I was able to teach my GSD the recall without an e-collar, nothing special. But later I used one for safety purposes and I wanted to take training further. I wanted to walk in the city off-leash without being concerned. Luckily, no one ever mentioned anything about it. I never intended to train any dog in order for him to become a prize-winning champion. I just want them to behave near me and not near me. If I were to solve all the problems I had with my dogs, such as leash-pulling on a 50kg GSD, the same problem for a Malinois puppy which I received fairly late from a close friend in a positive-only manner, I probably would have never gotten rid of the problems.
@TheTeenese
@TheTeenese 3 жыл бұрын
@@thouartstrong9507 yes! I also want a well behaved companion, not a brat of dog. I don’t consider making him a competition champion, he just loves to learn so we are having fun with it. Also unpopular opinion: I think positive only works only with stupid dogs, that can’t think by themselves. Maybe I’m mistaken, but dogs represent a mental ability of a 3 year old child. That’s the age when children learn to lie. So dogs also can be like this.. why not eat the cookie and have the cookie? Why not go chase the squirrel and then get a treat, bc it came back after all, right? Both highly rewarding. Not treating the dog in this situation would end up with the dog not coming back at all. I’m not saying positive only is bad. It’s great, it should take the majority of our training. It depends on the situation and the dog. I am aware that sometimes going with positive will work better than balanced. Like resource guarding, or some real severe fear aggression, at least until the point the dog can understand correction. I had to snap my leash pretty harsh, in my opinion, for my puppy to get the idea that lunging at other dogs is not a go to behaviour whenever he is not sure what to do. he acted like a wild monkey, he wanted to play and at the same time he was scared and had no idea what to do. Some dogs ignored him, some accepted his play invitation and some snapped at him without warning. That just confused him more. He had no idea how to behave. He thought acting like a squirrel on caffeine was the thing to do. He had firmly established trigger threshold, that months of positive only never made it better. The shock from the snap threw him out of that closed circle and allowed me to point him in the right direction. Now I basically work with positive on his reactivity. Whenever he gets a bit too emotional I can lead him away with a few gentle tugs, like half halting a horse (I know positive folks would flip, “never ever tug your leash, it will destroy relationship with your dog, you will lose it’s trust”). Now we can pass by a dog on a forest track with him only stretching his nose out with curiosity. Once we pass he loses interest. He gets agitated with other dogs reacting to him as well, but it’s only natural. Sure it’s still a lot of work. But surely not years of training, few months maybe - take the note - I’m a novice dog handler. I’m considering getting an e-collar. Basically, for recall off leash. I think for a 9 month old pup his recall is almost perfect. But he is not 100% sure when there is game involved. It’s a hunting dog and there is a lot of wild animals around here. He is good with game at about 40 meter distance. Or game he is expecting and is given strict instruction to stay close to me. Anything that jumps out unexpectedly can trigger him to chase. I can’t blame him for it, it’s instincts. I just need something physical to reach him. Working on a long line, that most of the people here take as the gold solution, doesn’t work. He ain’t stupid, he knows he is restrained even on a 30-40 meter long leash. Then the chase is not a thing and his recall is 100% perfect. And it just tangles and messes up and gives him unnecessary corrections for no reason. I got him a gps for now for my own comfort. Can’t decide if e-collar in my inexperienced hands is a good idea and if my pup will react nicely to it. And there is that people around here take the need of using aversives as a failure in training. Especially with a breed known as easy to train. So somehow I still can’t shake off the feeling of shame 😅 so for now I’m learning as much as I can and listening to the voices of both camps 😊

@@TheTeenese Regarding that positive-only works with some dogs, I agree. A smaller dog bred to sit in your lap and look cute will without a doubt react differently to training than a dog bred for guarding sheep and fighting off wolves, as an example. And dog reactivity on the leash is in my opinion purely a thing of experience. What I had to learn quickly was that every situation is a part of the learning process. At first, I started training in a relatively open space, somewhere out in nature. There were a few dogs so that helped with making sure it is focused on me. Because if no one is there, of course, the dog will be focused on you. The more distractions my dog had to face, the more I realized it had to learn. So I had to get over my fear of not taking out my dog to places I didn't want to be simply because I knew it would be a difficult situation. So I exposed my dog more and more to difficult situations. That's how you deal with them and that's what worked for me. Of course, I used a prong collar and e-collar. I think this channel talks about it as well, it is called proofing your dogs. Making sure they can talk the talk and walk the walk, regardless of distractions. I think an e-collar could work for you. I usually used a long leash for that, about 5 to 10 meters at first. After the dog knew the basic command of "hier" which is "here" in German, I advanced to the next stages. I kind of scheduled each walk. I had a time where I made the dog strictly walk by my side, commonly known as heel. And for toilet time, I just used the long leash and gave the dog some freedom. Every once in a while I would recall the dog to practice. Eventually, I went to the e-collar and long leash, as seen in the video. Then I would let my dog off the leash, it was a bit of practice at first, but with the e-collar, it was as easy as it could be. It is also not always about the right tools, sometimes the relationship needs to be built yet. I don't know about your status of training but what I lacked at first was a better relationship. It was just to connect with the dog better. The dog needs to realize that you are the one - everything the dog gets is from you. Food, attention, treats, toys. Whatever it may be. But the dog has to make the world you, not around you. This took me quite a while but as I said, I practiced with the long leash until I had that relationship. Anyways, if you decide to get one for your dog, which I recommend simply out of safety purposes, make sure it is either e-Collar technologies or Dogtra. The rest is not approved by the majority of dog trainers. It is usually either one of these brands. Also, don't be ashamed to use devices for training. I have to admit, I was also ashamed at first. Then, when my dog behaved better than anyone else's dog, everyone watched it with big eyes. It is just a matter of getting used to it. Dog training is not some complex topic, it just takes a lot of consistency and time. Some days it will work better, some worse. I had to sacrifice a lot of my nerves but I built up the patience for it eventually.

@@thouartstrong9507 I know what You are talking about. I go to places and expose my pup to things. Hiding was never a thing to do for me. I knew I wanted my dog to be reliable off leash as I want my dog to be a stable and hack rides companion. It’s really important to me. And I would never sentence my dog to a life on a piece of string. He is just born to run. I don’t really correct him when he does something I don’t want to when I know the situation was just way too much to handle for him and he is out of his mind. Smashing my dog in a state like this is just wrong and won’t achieve anything by it. I try to slow down a little, not to overdo with the pressure. I can also see that there is a better connection between us, he looks at me for support and guidance more often. I’m slowly getting better at reading my pup. So now I know when he can benefit from a correction or praise and when to just get away and start over. I other words we are learning each other. We have structured walks, there is time when I have him at heel, time when he is free to explore when he is on a leash and time for him off leash, with simple commands like here, sit, down, stay, back up, trying some hunting dog basics, or some fun commands like weaving between my legs during the walk. There is time for serious work, time for play, and time for my pup to explore by himself. As for recall, my dogs knows “tu” or 2 short whistle signals as “here”. At both cues he runs to me at top speed. The only time he doesn’t respond is when he is in a really focused chase mode after a deer when he gives in to the instincts, which doesn’t really happen often. Usually he looks at me with a “what now?” look before he goes 😂 “leave it” stops him then I am well aware I would have to start over with a leash, all that conditioning stuff. I think I want to practice conditioning just in my backyard on a leash at least a month or two just to be sure he responds well, before I go any further. If it comes to it I think I will go with e-Collar technologies. Dogtra’s transmitter looks easier to use, but I’m not sure if it has the stimulation level locking feature as educators have. I don’t want to flip the switch accidentally when stuffing the transmitter in my pocket and then giving my dog way too strong stimulation if I forget to check the levels. Thank you for your response and words of encouragement 😊

I feel so thankful to live in a European country that doesn't have a ban on e-collars, prong collars, etc. Even tho they are legal, we don't have any trainers that use them (at least I haven't found any). Unfortunately, banning tools also takes away freedom from dogs. Yes sure, some dogs don't need tools and can be free without e-collars. What about the other 99% of dogs then? Is it humane to keep our dogs on a short ass leash for their entire life? Is it humane to throw our dogs in a damn dogfighting ring aka dog park? Is it humane to have our dogs off-leash with no tools and they get ran over by a car? Is it humane to leave our dogs at home while we are out all day... because the dogs don't behave well enough in public? All of these examples, in my opinion, are extremely inhumane, brutal, and sad. Why the fuck get a dog if we can't let them enjoy life? Ban e-collars for what? So our dogs can just sit around on a leash until they die? Yeah, hell no.

Free anecdote appropriate for the content: I rescued a ~3 year old cattle dog this spring with serious leash reactivity. Tried several ineffective methods for about a month to solve the issue. Switched to an ecollar. Moderate electric stim made the dog go harder at the target. Switched to max while the dog was reacting in about a half dozen situations. Dog stopped reacting severely, so the door was opened to address the reactivity in a more meaningful way. Took about a month for me to feel comfortable with the dog off leash. Now he runs free in public every day, and the strongest correction I’ve applied in recent memory is a 12 on the Dogtra Arc. On leash I use physical corrections and play to teach the dog how to stay happy. Content that Haz and a few other trainers puts out has been instrumental in the success I’m seeing. Keep up the good fight Haz and friends!

I have a passion for well trained dogs and I agree with your way of training and thinking, I'm 82 and on fixed income or I would definitely join. Started when I was only 8 years old to train my dog. Keep up the good work. Ps I still have 7 gsds, youngest is 7 month old and a happy handful

Thank you sir. I have never used a e collar. You are brave to wear and show how the e collar works. Most states in the so called Free America dogs in public has to be on a leash. Most dog parks when you show up with a large dog breed you are blocked from entering or you can't set your dog free. I an older, and when I trained back in the 70s and 80s for police and military I hated when trainers used the choke collar so hard they injuried the dog. Even now with my mum rescue dog he goes everywhere with me no leash or collars of any kind . My last Germany Shepherd who past away, he went everywhere no leash no collar. He was protective, and did his job to the end. Thank you for your channel and I am learning more and more.

I think the 'burn' myth comes from the friction of the contact points. Some dogs just scratch and shake a lot, and having any contact point against the skin, can make some marks depensing on the skin sensititity, I believe.

Some of the cheap brands malfunction alot and can cause burns (was just doing research and alot the cheap ones had horrific reviews of whole patches of hair and skin burned off)but the good quality brands had great reviews so it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Research pays! Haha great vid!

You are absolutely correct. I have watched several of your videos and often thought.....what an asshole. Then on second thought I realized you are much like my dog who I often refer to as an “askhole” because I live in the Bible Belt and that’s the only terminology that’s acceptable ‘round here. He looks to me for guidance because he respects me and STILL sometimes tries to do it his way if the reward is greater than the punishment! Lol and THAT is why I love the big “askhole”! He ain’t no “yes man”! (He’s half APBT and Half Great Pyrenees rescue.) I train hard and I often take a lot of criticism from folks for it but I know after all these years (I was raised by a bird dog trainer, my dad) that “you have to let the punishment fit the crime.” If I didn’t keep a grip on him via The Boss educator e-collar, I would be in trouble before long. I LOVE this info and it is soooo desperately needed. Thank you from a little southern belle with a big ass dog who literally is alive today because of the info you posted in this video. Bravo!

Can someone clarify to me whether 1.) you should strive for your dog to be well trained enough to go to a dog park and be able to interact with other dogs while still listening and backing down from an interaction when told, or 2.) it's far too difficult an uphill battle against nature and you should pursue offlead exercise elsewhere? I can't seem to find a concrete answer to this, and I want to know what I should objectively be aiming for with my own huskies, whom I have not had very long. One of them is quite a dominant spirit and started causing problems last time he was at the dog park, and I figured I needed to get serious with the training so that we could eventually go back. Outside of the dog park, both of them are decent at offlead recall (in a relaxed way--what I'm used to with my birds--going to be tightening up on that with e-collar training, which Shield K9 does a great job of explaining). I am serious about training them better anyway, but I just don't know if my goal is the dog park anymore... Haz states in one of his videos that he doesn't do dog parks at all, despite being such an amazing trainer. So I just kind of want to know what is most sensible. I've heard both statements, either that your dog should be able to go to the dog park without an issue given proper training or that dog parks are stupid and will inevitably lead to issues.
@TPinesGold
@TPinesGold 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with your logic. I would not base my training standards for my dogs on the two options that you have defined. I aim for the highest standards for control, balance, social etiquette, etc so that my dogs can be off leash with a neutral attitude around people and dogs; only greeting other people and dogs at my discretion. I would never go to a dog park -- not because my dogs are not trained to be controlled and balanced in that environment; they are! But because I have no control over the training and behaviors of the other dogs and people there that are not known to me. That's a risk that you cannot control other than choosing not to go there. Forget about dog parks and do some research to find good trainers in your area who can provide you and your dogs access to controlled and safely supervised interactions with their controlled, balanced and well trained dogs. If your dogs have social reactivity issues, then you will be in the right place for safe and competent help. You can't reliably get that at a dog park.

how do you pair two receivers to one transmitter to work simultaneously not dog1 and dog 2?
@TPinesGold
@TPinesGold 2 жыл бұрын
With Dogtra collars, the transmitter frequency cannot be changed from the factory setting. But any compatible receiver can be easily re-set by the user to be paired with the transmitter. No limit to the number of receivers that could be paired with a given transmitter. I would guess same for brand shown here. I have never used two rx's on the same strap, but I keep a spare strap & rx set to the same tx because the rx tends to become discharged before the tx. If I goof on keeping unit charged, no big deal to switch to spare rx without interrupting my session.
