Domino's Pizza sales fell a decade ago, but today it's world's biggest pizza company by sales. How did Domino's turn around its fortunes to dominate competitors like Pizza Hut and Papa John's?
For decades, food delivery meant Chinese takeout or Pizza, usually from a local shop or a large chain like Domino's Pizza. That's changed with the rise of food delivery services like Uber Eats, Grubhub, Postmades, and DoorDash. That's bad for Domino's. It might be American's number 1 pie maker, but Domino's Pizza built its business on delivery.

I remember when Domino's quality went downhill. I stopped ordering for several years. When I saw the ad that they improved it, I was surprised that they actually admitted that their product had gone to crap. That sounded sincere to me, so I tried them out again. They weren't lying, it was a completely improved pizza in every way. I remain impressed.

Small side story: Domino's franchisee in Peru had an incident around 7 years ago, where customers found cockroaches in their pizza. Suddenly multiple reports of similar higiene issues appeared and people tweeted the stories. The headquarters in the US saw the tweets, reassured action would take place, and a week later they revoked all franchisee contracts, which made the stores to be closed for years. About 3 years ago, someone else acquired the franchise back there and have been slowly reopening the stores, with an open kitchen policy and total update/modernization of the restaurants.

Local franchise gave points for a free pizza when the delivery was late--even before I had a change to complain or call. They just emailed. "That was bad service. We apologize." And they made it right. That's how you keep customers!

When I was in college (1997-2001), our campus food service had a partnership with Domino's, so we could use our meal plan flex dollars for Domino's food. Since I rarely could eat a whole pizza at once, I would put the leftovers in the fridge till the next day. By doing this, I learned that Domino's has the BEST REHEATED FOOD I’D EVER HAD; the reheated leftovers were JUST AS GOOD AS FRESH! For this reason, Domino's has remained my favorite, & the reheated quality hasn't changed in that time. When I get Domino's now, I normally tell this to the delivery person/carryout cashier.

When they changed there sauce and started doing chicken wings and pasta...and the order online coupons are how they won my business for life. Consistency is the key in any business, I've had minor issues over the years, little mistakes...topping, wrong crust etc. I had a heart to heart with the owner..didn't ask for a freebee, even though he did offer. My point is treat people the way you want to be treated and you get a loyal customer for life👍😎.

I watched without eating anything, stopped in the middle because this made me crave for some domino's, paused watching while waiting for my delivery, resumed watching while chewing my domino's, paused the video again because it's just sooo good that I had a meditative moment enjoying the taste, resumed watching after I felt full. I started at Dominos. I was making $9.30 an hour(minimum wage in Denver at the time). They also stole my tips for months. The tips were only about $3 a day though. I used the experience to get a job at a local pizza place which paid $12 an hour to start. I eventually got up to $20 and hour plus tips. But the management was scummy so I quit. I then got an even better job that started at $18 plus tips and bonus. And now I’m about to get a raise to $20 an hour again. So my point is work local and never work for a corporation.

@@tyronekracht461 yes, i know pizza hut is known for stuffed crusts (and garlic knot crust, and triple decker crust, and bacon stuffed crust among others) but papa John's also jumped on that train and the point i was making is other places focused on gimmicks and specialty items instead of improving the base product. And imo, Pizza Hut is the worst, their sauce is pretty much tomato flavored water, they put far and away the least amount of cheese/toppings and even their pan and breadstick dough has gotten considerably more airy, as if they're overproofing it so they can use less dough by weight to get the same volume. At least Little Ceasars' pan pizza is good, they still have crazy bread and they're so dirt cheap that it's not like you're getting ripped off. That's about as good a pizza as you're going to get for $5-6 that isn't homemade

Many years ago Domino's was failing. I mean their pizza sucked. They started a television campaign and went to the people asking them what they'd change. The people spoke and Domino's listened. This is why they are #1 in my area.

@@latortugapicante719 Nah, worked there as a manager for a second job, pizzas are bigger, and fresher than any other pizza place. Pizza hut uses all frozen pre made crusts. We hand make every pizza from raw dough at every Dominos.

I’ve been a dominos customer for a long time I would go there when the lines at Pizza Hut were too long. I remember grease floating on the top of the pizza. No a good look but pizza tasted “OK”. since then have seen great improvement. Only pizza I will have now. Great job on your work to improve the product. It worked.

At college in Ithaca NY, Domino's was the only way to get food delivered that would accept a check. Their empty boxes were all over campus (1971-75). If a check bounced, parents would be sure it got covered.

Of course there isn't scientific evidence. It's not fresh or frozen that make your cooking good. It's heating elements used. Convection ovens, like the ones you see on TV, have different heating elements which is why you can put in frozen items and they will come out fine.

I'm a pizza delivery driver for Pizza Hut and I agree with Domino's model of opening more stores. More stores mean less waiting time both carry-outs and delivery times with a higher probably of getting better tips for drivers. However, finding people to work at minimum wage with crappy benefits is difficult, especially to those who're in-store workers. Better pay or benefits means happier workers and less turn-over employee rates. On that note, be nice to your drivers! They deal crap on every level (i.e. customers who like to be treated like they are gods, people phone prank orders, harsh traffic and weather conditions, etc.) on a daily basis and its not pleasant.

$5.50 AUD value range down here in Australia which is about $3.72 USD Used to be $5 AUD but only half the value range pizzas are that price now I think only the cheese pizza and vegetarian pizza.

Another major factor that makes Domino's so appealing (at least in Maryland) is the $5.99 Mix-and-Match Deal. My family ends up getting 2 medium two topping pizzas for under $20.

I stayed getting Domino's constantly in 2014 in college. Two large pizzas for like 14 bucks. It was dinner and a snack for Friday and Saturday. It was cheap and easy to order.

having tried most of the chain pizzerias, I find Dominos Pizza to be much better tasting, then any of the other brands. Also, there delivery is still good, even though they no longer guarantee 30 minutes or less (which was a crazy campaign to be begin with).

@@arandomguy3288 This video was focusing primarily on the US market solely because they were tracing the company's roots, and not the Indian one (which, while the largest outside of the US by number of stores, is only about 1/5 of the size of what is in the US). If you were to look at revenue, I bet it's far less than 1/5 of what is taken in here in the states. It could be that Jubilant FoodWorks simply doesn't feel that it's worth hiring employees themselves, and I bet those delivering food there get paid comparatively far less than what they do here in the states as well, making it a smart financial move for the company.

Not even close. Third party delivery services existed in the 90s and completely collapsed with the dot com bubble bursting. It's also not a good deal for restaurants and third party delivery isn't very reliable. Domino's does delivery better, simple.

Now you can barely get service at most Pizza Huts. They're forcing you to use their app since they won't answer the phone and refuse to acknowledge yo when you sit down in the dining area to eat.

My mom was at a Pizza Hut once and a huge roach crawled out from the kitchen and died in right in front of the counter. After the customers told several different workers about the roach, finally a cook came out and scooped up the dead roach with a spatula (like they give you to serve the pizza when you dine in) and took it to the back with him.

I started trying dominos around 2010 (when they did the turn-a-round) and I grew out of it, but in more recent years I've occasionally been visiting there for their standard cheese pizza (Sometimes with pineapple. Don't judge me lol.) They aren't all bad. A friend of mine (not from the states) insists Papa Johns isn't as notorious as it is in the US (where this person lives) as well.

I don't know how most other Domino's locations are, but my location is very stingy with the toppings. I have to order, and pay for, double the amount of toppings that you would normally get as standard on any other pizza and it's still never a decent amount.

My Dominos started skimping on cheese. I’m not paying for “extra” in the hope of getting a normal amount. They lost my business. I’d pay a lot more and order a delicious pizza from the mom & pop restaurant. Did that a few times and stopped altogether. Too much money.

They keep emailing me and offering me a free pizza to try and get my business back, but it's not working. And the mom & pop places are definitely expensive. That's why I was going there, but then they started calling most of the meats premium toppings and charging extra for each topping so it started to be too expensive to buy there often. And the store where I go is too cheap to provide crushed red peppers. I don't know of any other pizza store that won't give you peppers for your pizza.

I used to be an undercover agent for Dominos decades ago. I would order a pizza, and when it was delivered I had to answer a secret survey that the drivers didn't know. I was young and they paid me for the pizza. I was like, hell yeah, free pizza! I remember thinking like an idiot that I held the drivers fate in my hands and they didn't know the power I was wielding. Muahaha!!! 😈

I remember when Domino's came to Denmark back in the 1995ish we had to try it out, back then we had pizzeria's at every second corner, we drove past 10 to get to a Domino's, got a smaller pizza at a more expensive prize that did`t tast as good, first and last time I ate there pizza, they based there business on delivering, but most of the small pizzeria's did that as well, beside you had your own local one with in a few minuts walk nomatter where you lived in Copenhagen and with in 10 minuts in most other smaller citys, a few years back Domino's had to close all their shops in Denmark, do to problems with health and safety (dirty shops) but now they are back, every time I drive past one they look completely empty and all there electric bikes are standing out side, not out delivering, but now we also got "just eat" and "Hungry" and a ton of other fast food restaurant's beside the good old small one mans pizzeria's.

idk man. Just the smell of Dominos makes me nauseous and lose my appetite. I feel like I'm eating cold sauce on stale bread. They have horrible cheese and disgusting sauce. I much prefer Little Ceasars though their accessibility isn't the greatest.

In India we deliver pizza in any how conditions , almost at top speed of 80 to 120 kmph , 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 We don't care traffic rule , bcz that reason domino decided to break distance between customers and dominos house almost up to 2 km from 4 km , But still we break rule 😁😁😁😁😁😁 , Even they give strict warning to us on traffic rule , but who cares , 😎😎😎😎😎 finally dominos realised and they removed 30 min and allowed us to deliver but its depend on order if order is one pizza then we deliver it in 30 min , But if order is in bulk we give information of delivery time to customers , Finally at the end traffic police happy , we happy , customers happy , 😎😎😎😎😎😎

I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate. this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants. along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days. menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app.
