How one British brand caused America’s invasion of tv drug ads
Vlog channel / evanedinger
Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it!
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)
If you want to know HOW I make my videos including gear, lighting, all the tiddly bits that connect it all together, (with cheaper alternatives and kit I used to use), I've listed each item, what it's great at, and why I use it on the gear section of my website here:
www.evanedinger.com/blog/my-gear
Otherwise: here's a quick list of some of my kit without descriptions from the above link:
Camera: Sony A7siii

Main Lens: Sony 24mm f/1.4 G-Master

Secondary Lens: Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G-Master

Shotgun Microphone: Sennheiser MKH-416

Pharmacist here in the UK (I work on GP premises though). The main issue is, as usual, private healthcare. If we do not think your request for a medication is justified, we just won't do it and so will do every other clinician. When healthcare is private, you don't only need to keep the patient healthy, but also the customer satisfied...

I’m a mental health therapist and one of the offices I worked at actually advertised free lunch in their job descriptions. It came from pharma reps. Therapists can’t prescribe and aren’t supposed to make medication recommendations beyond “I think you should talk to a prescriber about medication options for [diagnosis]” but the pharma reps would say “well you can’t get in trouble for saying you’ve heard some people respond well to a certain medication as long as you clarify you’re not making a recommendation.” The whole thing felt so slimy. I never did recommend anything to clients beyond talking to a prescriber. But the lunches were always very “hey we’re helping you with food you help us by getting the word out about these meds”

ITS SIMPLE: A Biological organic ancient human body cannot be “fixed” nor healed with petrochemicals and their novel synthetic derivatives. Nature doesn’t work like that - and most doctors really don’t know this. It’s not part of their schooling system. Any holistic/ functional/ intuitive/ “alternative”/ natural / or experienced : healer on the planet knows this tho. So best don’t ask your doctor at all, and ask some of the “alternatives” instead. Or do your own research. and best throw away your TV too, the program there is also bought and paid for by the same d-rug makers. Be well namaste 🙏

Another influencing factor here in the UK is that it is considered bad practice and against NICE guidelines for health care setting to use the brand names of drugs in their records. Your surgery, pharmacy, care home or whatever will prescribe and administer paracetamol or fluoxitine, not Tylenol or Prozac. This makes it even harder for those drug companies to gain any sort of prominence in healthcare settings. This is true even in private settings.

I worked at a hospital, here in the UK, and almost every pen and post-it note used to have an ad for a drug company on it. Not so much now, though. I went to a party in the 90's, that was officially a "promotional" event for a drug company, aimed at Doctors. It was actually a piss-up with a small stand in the corner for the company, that everyone was ignoring. The company had sponsored the "event", and had a rep to answer questions, that no-one asked.

I think this is one of the reasons healthcare is so expensive in the US. Yep, someone has to pay for all those ads and lobbying. The result of the ads is that people do demand drugs from their doctor after seeing the ads. It's caused shortages because folks want the drugs for things they weren't developed for like the diabetes drugs now being used for weight loss. It all a bit of a dumpster fire. Allowing corporations to have the same rights as people (14th Amendment expanded interpretation) has been horrendous!

To a Brit this makes no sense. If you’re sick beyond something that an over-the-counter drug can fix then you visit a doctor and then they use their *actual medical knowledge* to decide what (if any) drugs you need. There’s very little competition between brands because if you sell to the NHS (and in the UK you aren’t in business if you don’t) then you get whatever the NHS decides to pay (and no more) and so do all your rivals.

We get cheaper drugs in the UK partly because the price does not include the 5 Billion Dollars spent on advertising. I really do not understand why America cannot see this. Also, Pharma companies do not spend as much on bribing government ministers. ( note "not as much" )

The problem is that drug companies are incentivised by profit which means keeping people dependent on drugs rather than actually making them better. Medications can be life-saving and are absolutely necessary in some cases, but if there is an option that will allow people to reduce/come off medications they should at least be given that choice as there are always side effects.

the only problem is non prescription drugs can be advertised in UK . This can lead to people to being conned into buying expensive branded drugs as they exaggerate their effectiveness . now you can buy expensive treatments for heartburn , which may delay a person getting treatment for a more serious condition , that may need medical intervention . Certainly the low dose codeine drugs have been a problem because they encourage over dosage as they contain a below therapeutic amount to help with serious pain and contain 500mg of paracetamol in each tablet . again self medication may delay somebody seeking medical advice

You don’t understand. There are two reasons for the ads FIRST it costs hundreds of millions of dollars perhaps billions to bring a new drug markeThen once it is approved the company has a patent monopoly for a limited period of time. After that other companies can produce the drug without paying anything for the research and development. So to recover its investment, the company must sell as much as possible in that short period of the Patent monopoly. So it advertises to bring that to the attention of possible patients.SECOND Even after millions spent for research and testing, some people have reactions even to the most beneficial of drugs. In the event of a bad reaction, a lawsuit will be filed, and the lawyer will argue that the company knew that some people would have reactions and didn’t earn the patients And should be punished for not warning the public. So one purpose of the ads is to warn the public about all the possible side effects to avoid punitive damages in the event of a bad reaction.

Amazing Boots started it all. It's crazy that a consumer must know what medication they require rather than an MD. It's like when UK GP's love it when patients turn up with their Google diagnoses in hand.

How? It's called people stop watching regular TV. Advertisers pulled out, and the only thing that was left were the usual ads you got on Daytime TV. Medical ads, Insurance, GED programs, payday loans, and lawyers. Now that it is mainly older people, it is all health-related ads. Every time I visit my parents, that is literally all the ads they have on. Saw the trend back in 2005 when the quality of ads were starting to look cheaper and more tacky. Money was leaving, and now it is pretty much all gone.

Pharmaceutical ads on TV in NZ are so rare that I can't recall seeing any that so it does not seem to be so effective. However, as we have a health system in which prescriptions are, with very few exceptions, free at point of collection (pharmacies), competition is minimal as drugs are purchased by a govt. agency, Pharmac. A which, by buying in large quantities keeps their purchase price low, so reducing the overall cost of providing health services.

The drug ads are so weird(i know they have to be due to a liability perspective) but you get half the ad talking about how amazing the drug use, then half the ad talking about all the side effects that are most times worse then what the drug should fix (not from the US ,but have been there on vacation several times)

Ibuprofen is an over-the-counter drug in the UK (but in controlled amounts), and it's also OTC in the USA. However, in 1983, when that advertisement was produced, I suspect that wasn't the case. The advertisement did not, by the way, claim any medical benefits; it was purely about a price comparison.

In my country it’s legal as long as the product is not an actual drug. We have a shit ton of ads for saline nasal sprays and vitamin C supplements, but they’re not really that frequent compared to cell provider ads. I once saw 7 back-to-back-to-back ads for the same cell provider, it was crazy.

One of the things that’s most interesting (and kind of horrifying) about this stuff is what happens when pharmaceutical companies *don’t* directly bribe physicians. A lot of times, it looks much more like drug reps bringing free lunch to the office, and being personable. Drug reps are encouraged to have strong, trusting, interpersonal relationships with doctors, so then when they promote their drugs, it’s like a friend recommending you something. Who cares if theres an identical generic for half the price? My best bud the drug rep says I should prescribe this name brand instead! Crazy stuff.

Regulation and red tape tends to get a bad rap and so many politicians trumpet the removal of it but there always tends to be an overwhelming reason for it - usually to hog tie powerful interests from doing as they please. I really woke up to its importance after being utterly wrecked by the 2008 financial crisis and finding out just how much deregulation was at the root of the sheer scale of the disaster (and the ability of those responsible to escape any consequences for it). A great deal of justification by Brexiteers for their anti-EU position was also bitter complaints about regulation and red tape, saying how they impeded personal freedom and trade opportunities - with increasing delays at the border and shortages of important supplies (particularly medicines), not to mention fears over allowing US-style toxic/dangerous food and drink to be sold in the name of getting trade deals - the old regulations and red tape really don't seem too bad.
