It depends on the browser you are using. I saw something recently that Google is working on a way to cripple/make non-functional existing adblockers in a future release of any Chromium based browser. I don't remember the details, but I believe it had to do with moving to a new version of some API. I also think it was intended to be released before the end of the year. I think, because it is not Chromium based, that Firefox was one browser mentioned that would not be affected.
@MTGeomancer
@MTGeomancer 3 күн бұрын
@@wildbill4496 That's Manifest V3. And yes, Firefox is immune because it is not Chromium based. The entire point of Google's implementation of V3 is to remove adblockers like on their Android browser (and again, Firefox on android does allow addons including adblockers). I'm sure adblockers will (if they havne't already) find a way around V3, but Google's priorities should be very clear and I would not suggest a Chromium based browser to anyone.

One the second download, the file size is different, from 400K to 4.2M, that should alert people. Also, the full screen installer had a close cross on the top right (barelly visible I agree) but it's a typical location for closing application. Now, your scenario is not very realistic, because a normie would be using the default browser and not Firefox. (I don't know if it would help in that situation though) It would have been helpful to show on wallpaper cave that the download link is an ad by showing the little blue icons in the top right of the ad, so people understand to NOT click on it.

And now how would it be with the security kept untouched? Which most people probably have with Win10 and 11. It even has a ransomware protection of some kind. Best set up a standard user account with UAC up to the max or go with Linux where you have to add password for every more serious action to take. By default even browsers don't have execution privileges.

That depends on your definition of downloading, does adding a browser extension count as downloading? If so then unless you are being hunted by governments and keep everything up to date its extremely unlikely, nigh impossible to get malware from a web browser without downloading anything. To get malware without downloading anything requires a zero day vulnerability worth many millions. Such vulnerabilities are not used on normal every day people.

These ads for malware are usually targeted toward those without technology literacy (kids and the elderly, for example), hence the fake download buttons and false promise of game cheats. Most, if not all, people that would click these types of links lack an understanding of computer safety practices, and that's what the people creating these virus and malware downloads are counting on. If they can trick someone into clicking a fake link, they can reasonably trick them into downloading and running malware as well.

If you're running Windows 10 or 11, you don't really need anything more than Windows Defender. Generally speaking, as long as you keep the virus definitions fully up to date, and know not to click on suspicious links or download any potentially dangerous files, you should be fine. Prior to Windows 10, it was usually necessary to install a separate anti-malware software, but Windows Defender has become functional enough that having another anti-malware running can actually just slow down your system, rather than be of any help.

Based on my experience, Chrome is dangerous. It can force to control your PC. I don't use Chrome anymore now, instead I use Brave. Much much safer.

In CIS countries KZfaq (by Google) literally SPAMS the video ads of a certain chemical drugs Darknet marketplace, regardless of the ad preferences in user settings. Russia is OK though due to YT disabled the ads along with the monetization for Russian IP's

Malware is everywhere, what to do if my machine infected ? How to know im safe again? How to proceed? 0 clues. If a ramsomware appeared on my screen (even if it was a prank one) i would just look at the screen and cry. I have 25 years old and i have 0 clue on what to do

As someone who do tech support, I can say: you would not believe what people a falling for. Older people these days are afraid of AI cloning the voice of their grand child to scam them on the phone. Meanwhile, when they see a curious post on Facebook or MSN, they click on it and then blaming their free antivirus for not stoping them from clicking on it and the 42 prompts asking for admin privileges.

Bing lists downloads for official sites as a big download button upon a search so the odds are dramatically lowered. Getting ads before the official site is a problem. Quality has really taken a second place on all engines but google is especially bad. Try to search any basic question, you no longer get answers like you used to, you get ai articles filled with ads
