How Elden Ring Taught Me To Take Breaks

I'm stubborn. Bull-headed. And a recovering workaholic. But this is how Elden Ring taught me to take breaks. FromSoftware's Game of the Year 2022 not only perfect the open world game formula but also perfectly married open world game design with a Soulslike appeal. After playing a lot of Soulsborne games, Elden Ring seems to be teaching the player to take a break. Through the built-in difficulty spikes like the Margit the Fell Omen boss fight, players are encouraged to take a break and mindfully explore the open world of Limgrave. Instead of grinding and grinding your way to frustration, Elden Ring wants you to take breaks. In this video essay, things get personal. And I tackle my own struggles with the grind mindset that social media and modern society have fed us for years. Hope you enjoy the video essay!

I was drawing for a project while watching this. Haven't eaten my lunch yet and wanting to take a shower and just stretch a little. But then I was thinking "damn I've been drawing for what, 1 hour? I could just, y'know... finish to color the character..." AND THEN 4:21 COMES OUT AT THE SAME TIME I THOUGHT THAT. It really did hit me like a train. Thanks for that, I guess I was really needing to remember myself breaks are indeed important... 😅

Relax? a break? what are these strange unheard-of concepts? And I definitely did the same, following the bonfires and throwing myself frustratingly at Margit, before stepping back and embracing the joy of SPLORE! Although naturally I didn't find the fancy boss-fight item thing until more exploring long after beating the boss 😆 Now, take a break!

This is my new favorite elden ring video essay. I had this exact experience when I played. Hated it first because I wanted to just “git gud”. This perfectly shows how I believe most souls borne fans first experienced the game and I feel that’s amazing. Ps. I was shocked how low your sub count was. I hope your career continues to grow :)

Ok 3:55 seconds in and let me just say as a long time supporter of yours, I see your grind and I know it’s not easy. You are one of the hardest working individuals that I’ve had the honor to come across and I know it takes a lot of time to write a good script. I love your writing and I hope you take more breaks in the future to nurture your craft ❤

The IRL application of this message is still so sorely needed to be heard. As a college instructor, I've had to re-think how to keep students from falling behind during and still after(ish?) the pandemic. Arbitrary deadlines and inflexible scheduled things create so much of a roadblock for people that are already pushing themselves so hard - it's no longer really "assessment" at that point. I can't imagine how youtube and social media engagement push people to keep at the content creation all the time... or maybe I can imagine it, with all sorts of content creators talking about burnout from feeding *the algorithm*. Total side note: Were you against summoning Rogier for the Margit fight? >_>
@filmotter
@filmotter Жыл бұрын
I was against summoning him at first because I had been conditioned to just like "get good" from the Dark Souls fandom lol. But I did summon him when I came back to the fight after my exploring.

I don't like most open world games just because they fall into those "ubisoft traps". But I LOVE exploration when done right - hello metroidvanias! In Elden Ring I played for so many hours before even thinking about going to Margit's castle, exactly because I knew it was the "right way to go" to progress the story. And just exploring was so good.

The genius of Miyazaki is he can always predict 2 steps ahead of the player. While Elden Ring does feature an open world the progression is actually Linear. Many quintessential tools/upgrades are guarded behind easy to miss “optional” places. The exploration is actually intended by design, while it felt like player themselves had all the initiative to take the detour. Common issue with open world is the lack of intrinsic motivation to explore. Most developers uses mission systems to drive the player extrinsically, and you end up with the Ubisoft formula. By making the first gatekeeper hard and severely limiting the players toolset, Elden Ring provides strong intrinsic motivation to git gud or find more tools. Once you get enough tools and resources pass a certain threshold, the world “opens” for you. As the threshold differs from player, this is how everyone got their unique experience from the same game. If you do the game as “Intended” by Miyazaki and grind all the side contents before approaching each gatekeeper, Elden Ring isn’t really a hard game.

I am pretty sure margit switches up his timings and combos once you start dodging it. I grinded the fight for hours and every time i found a opening in his combos HE STOPS DOING THOSE COMBOS.
