How Eva Moskowitz Outmuscled the Teachers Union

In November 2003, Eva Moskowitz, then a freshman member of the New York City Council, held explosive public hearings about how union contracts imposed inane work rules on public schools. The city's political establishment was astonished.
Mosowitz-a former history professor, public school teacher, and self-proclaimed liberal, whose politics up until that point seemed to resemble those of every other Democratic politician in New York-was sacrificing her political career to take on organized labor. Exposing the consequences of teacher union contracts was a direct affront to the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which wields enormous influence in New York City elections.
Moskowitz didn't pussyfoot. At one point in the hearings, she even played audio testimony from a whistleblower with a disguised voice. She said that many of her sources declined to appear because they feared union retribution. She also went toe-to-toe with Randi Weingarten, the UFT's confrontational leader.
Two years later, when Moskowitz ran for Manhattan Borough President, Weingarten and the UFT mobilized against her and sunk her candidacy. So Moskowitz left politics for the time being; if she couldn't transform the system from within, she would build an alternative to the public schools.
Today, Moskowitz is the founder and CEO of Success Academy, which is the city's largest and most successful charter school network. With 32 schools around New York City-staffed by a non-union teaching force-Success Academy posted test results last year that astounded education policy experts.
Meanwhile, Moskowitz and her charter school allies started building a powerful coalition to counter the outsized political influence of organized labor. In March, when New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) tried to squash Success Academy's expansion plans, Moskowitz bused 11,000 charter school parents and kids up to the state capital in Albany to protest-and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo came out in support. De Blasio retreated. Success Academy could move forward with its expansion plans after all, and state lawmakers quickly passed a bill to protect charter schools from future interference by the mayor.
Reason TV's Nick Gillespie sat down with Eva Moskowitz to talk about why her schools are so successful, whether her model is scalable, how labor contracts hurt schools, and what moved her to sacrifice her political career to bring attention to the corrosive influence of unions on public education.
About 17 minutes.
Written, shot, and edited by Jim Epstein; interview by Nick Gillespie; additional camera Anthony L. Fisher.

DiBlasio, and the teachers union block the success of children? Are you kidding me? That is evil. How could you even want to do that? How could you sleep at night? Breaks my heart to see so many parents desperately wanting to get a better education for their kids, and not getting picked. People have got to support whatever works for kids, and gives them a better chance in life. What is happening now for this school - with the evil shutdowns, and all?

I began reading before the 2nd grade. By 6th grade I had read out the school library and the local public library. I dropped out of high school (perhaps because of boredom) and entered the Air Force in the Vietnam period. My first job out of the AF was in high energy nuclear research. I became a self taught electronics engineer and became quite successful. At one point I was making a quarter of a million dollars a year. I built ground breaking medical instruments and amoung other things a communications conversion board that was installed in the space station. Reading really is the key to success in life and today my grandchildren in the fourth grade can barely read the simplest sentence. The teachers unions must go. Any and all unions that have the slightest control of schools must go or else the American dream will go. Only top notch principals and teachers should have ANY say in the education of children.

Charter schools give each teacher a greater degree of freedom and independence within their own classroom in order to meet the individual demands to each of their students. I fully know and believe in every teacher's ability to properly teach without having to adhere to a huge bureaucracy which governs what, when, and how they must teach any subject. Charter schools represent the solution to restructuring the public education system in every state, while using the same amount of funding to empower every teacher to make their own decisions without throwing more money at our failing schools, but yet again excepting better results. As anyone can see from the video, majority of the students enrolled in NYC charter schools come from lower income households who actually need the assistance to become educated in order to emerge from poverty. As someone having graduated from high school less than 5 years ago and having learned at an accelerated pace in college within the realm of electrical engineering which exceeds anything public school ever exposed me to, I know the increased rigor which charter schools provide work much better.

The problem with charter schools is they only fix the problems for some kids. Theres still all the kids who don't have parents that care enough to sign them up. It doesn't solve the bigger problem. It leaves behind the kids at most risk. It's taking out the good kids that have a chance and leaving the ones that don't to fend for themselves while calling it a success. No. As long as there's kids graduating public schools functionally illiterate we don't have success. This just puts a bandaid on it a broken leg. We have to fix the public schools.

Public Schools in America are completely broken. In a city like New York, where the teacher's union contract favors the teacher in every possible way, where you can get a TENURED POSITION in two years, there is a 19-25% attrition rate of teachers in the first two years. Now, Attrition includes firings and resignations, but as we know, even in cases of sexual or violent outburst, it's very difficult to fire a teacher. So why are 20% or teachers quitting in the first two years? These are people who are promised a PAYCHECK for LIFE if they stick out two years. But people with integrity cannot remain in a system that harms children in favor of the pocketbooks of the teachers and administration. Tear down the government school system, they have failed us utterly.

Charter school students represent a different demographic, that is: the parents of these children pursued getting their child into a charter school. That speaks volumes. The parents of these children are putting a concerted effort into maximizing their child's education; They actually care.

it all starts with the parents. providing kids with proper nutrition, regular sleep schedules, scheduling study time, and providing an environment for kids to study (no TV, yelling, screaming, someone to help with homework). Parenting, Parenting, Parenting.

Charter Schools and Their Enemies by Thomas Sowell. I had no idea how low the test scores were in public schools. He exposes how the teachers unions are being favored over the needs of the children. The way out of poverty is through a better education. Charter schools need more funding and I like competition in schools because it leads to innovation and improvements. This is a huge issue. We need school choice. New York has 212 buildings that are half full. These buildings need to be filled with Charter School students. Let’s think our children first.

I think the big reason why charter schools work is because PARENTS who CARE are sending their kids, not everyone. If parents don't care neither will the kids

This video is from 2014 and we are still fighting over this and people are just NOW pulling their children out of public schools. My sister in law got her kids in a charter homeschool just before the pandemic. That's same school now has a waiting list and they are now doing a lottery. People are tired of the public school system because teacher unions have too many right and now enough accountability!

The wonderful results born from the hard work at the Success Academy schools should serve as a testament that answers several questions. 1. Irrespective of their personal packaging (skin color, ethnicity), any student can achieve high marks and reap the rewards, satisfaction & benefits from their effort. 2. Teachers unions and the federal education system are proven overburdened, top heavy, administrative boondoggles. Every year while their budgets increase, students fall further behind the students of competing countries. *_TRUST !!_*
