this is one of those 0.0001% time I disagree with Gary's pitch. Engineers are builders, especially the exceptional top tier ones would almost never advocate or leverage a blackbox driven magical solution like this. Solutions like these unfortunately appeal to non-tech folks like PMs and designers who almost always tend to over simplify this stuff.

ruby on rails have a lot of magic black thing yet was massively used by the startup guys because it's productive. ( you can show your boss something fast with that or built a v1 in a week end ) , I think they want to do the ruby on rails of scaling

I’m not sold by this pitch, as a dev there was no code snippets or examples also sounds like another NoSQL database to me. I’ll wait till this is running on prod at scale before jumping in

Can someone explain to me, with some sort of analogy, how/why building a backend with something like Rama is more scalable/better than using something like AWS Amplify, which also seems to abstract building the nitty gritty of backend. Is the idea that somehow Rama would theoretically scale and be more performant than whatever magic is going on behind the scenes in AWS Amplify?

Justin I see where you’re coming from But this is where people are the platform I trust Gary So if he says it It could be an ad or not I know his intention is good That’s where it’s getting grey but 1. Trust the people 2. Test what he mentioned 3. Tinker 4. Then decide on whether it’s an ad that’s for an amazing product Or just an ad The ad bit doesn’t really matter anymore

Serious question: does early stage startups benefit from this? Feels like premature optimization for scaling issues that may never happen. Since more startups don’t even reach PMF stage in their entire lifecycle. When is it appropriate to spend team engineering time to climb this rather steep learning curve?

The idea of Rama by Red Planet Labs revolutionizing backend development is truly remarkable. The fact that it could potentially replace the need for multiple databases and drastically reduce the amount of code required is mind-boggling. I was particularly impressed by the example of building a scalable clone of Mastodon with Rama, achieving the same functionality with a fraction of the code and development time. Such efficiency and scalability are game-changers for the industry.

Absolutely, the concept of Rama by Red Planet Labs has the potential to revolutionize backend development in profound ways. The prospect of simplifying and streamlining backend processes by reducing the need for multiple databases and significantly cutting down on code is both exciting and transformative.

@@michaelthomson5125 where did i name meta buddy? Lol and you do know there’s developers working on the software that is complete and there are no plans to drastically change it, often the only remaining work is to fix minor bugs and upkeep and minor updates. The comparisons are so misleading. When building a clone, you already have a clear path, as opposed to when building an original/new product, you have to experiment, and make so many mistakes along the way, hence the “millions” lines of code. I don't have anything against RAMA, but this is not an educational/informational video.
