When I was a teen we went down in the pasture and shot an Easton aluminum arrow with a target point straight up......after we released it...... talk about a bad feeling when it we lost sight of it. It was not a good idea not knowing where it would come down. We got lucky and it came down about 30 ft. from where we were standing, it hit on a flat spot of angle iron of my dads 4 row bedder/plow and when it hit it made a big ting noise and went straight back up about 60 ft. before coming straight back down. It was stupid thing to do. Never shoot an arrow straight up. 😅

heavier arrows help carry momentum, same reason why if you throw a tiny pebble it doesn't go as far as rock, the pebble might have faster velocity out of the gate but doesn't have the weight to keep its speed and energy over distance.

@@RaneBane that's not angle dependent that's distance dependant. You can shoot a .243 going 3900fps with a 55gr bullet flat and shoot a .300 Win mag with a 200gr bullet at 2700fps and after 200 yards the 300 win mag will lose less velocity and maintain energy compared to the lighter bullet

Asked my Army Engineer son & he hit me with:- S = v^2 Sin [2 alpha] / g The sine reaches the maximum value 1 when 2 alpha = 90 deg, so alpha = 45 deg. However, he said doesn't take into account air resistance and curvature of the Earth (sorry flat Earthers) so optimal angle is approx 32-33 degrees. Damn, must get his brains from his Mother 😁

If you want to know what arrow is going to go the furthest then look to what flight archers use. For unlimited compound the flight archery record is 1207m/1320 yards. Flight archers typically use X10's or ACE's for off the shelf arrows or they use carbon tubes with extra light points (10 to 12 grains), tiny fletchings and metal nocks. But if you're shooting into the wind you'll want a heavier point. Flight archers will have different arrows to suit the conditions they are shooting in.

Seems to confirm some of what Ranch Fairy and Rocket Man have been posting. That's its best to do what you can to run small veins, less helical, thin shaft... then to maintain stablity in flight you would need to increase foc.

Looked like high launch angle on the first shot, the fun part comes when the arrow lands on a stone or similar and falls over, makes it much harder to find, many years ago I played with some 1200 grain arrows at 20 yds they had a 60 sight mark, never got around to shooting them any further (sand filled), have made flu flus (spiral fletch much shorter range than large straight ish) that go 50 max with new intact fletch

assuming 45 degrees as the optimal launch angle is wrong unless your starting and ending point is on the same plane which it isn’t so you can not assume 45 degrees is the perfect launch angle for a projectile when seeking maximum range. High speed = high drag Low weight = low mommentum There's probably a law of diminishing returns, but you would probably get the most range shooting the heaviest bolt possible off of the crossbow without fletching.

I agree. Launch angle, weight of projectile, velocity are big factors. Also the higher the launch angle the angle of descent will be. At some point with a high launch angle the velocity will diminish, the weight of projectile will overtake and begin the descent of a steep landing angle. Think throwing a baseball or hitting a golf ball. High launch generally means steep landing angle. There’s lots of science in this test.

Interesting video. The world record is as far as I know around 1800 m, with both compound and crossbow. Of course different factors makes a difference, like the bow it self. Some bows are more efficient with heavier arrows than lighter and some bows probably the opposite. One of my guesses why the crossbow did not shoot futher is that short arrows are more unstable than longer arrows. So perhaps they drops a bit (relatively) faster.
@michaelmelling9333
@michaelmelling9333 Жыл бұрын
I'd say it's because shorter arrows have less weight/mass. But then I don't know much about anything.😱
@Corewood_TJP
@Corewood_TJP Жыл бұрын
@@michaelmelling9333 With other things equal yes. But crossbow arrows (or more correct bolts, but I think nowadays most people just say arrows) - are probably of much lower spine values than a compound bow arrow at 28". Of course the shorter arrows at 16-20" length gives a stiffer arrow / dynamic spine - but I would guess that the weight per inch is higher in a crossbow arrow than in a compound bow arrow. You can also see that because crossbow arrows typically weighs 400-450 grains (26 - 29 grams), incl. a 100 grains point. And that is the same as a compound bow hunting, 3D or indoor arrow typically would weigh. So crossbow arrows are not really lighter than compound bow arrows. I would also say that the arrow needs to have some weight - for the sake of the crossbow - or else the crossbow would feel it like a dryfire. 🙂

I was trying to find out how far an arrow would go when I was a kid. I shot an arrow straight up with a homemade bow, it went out of sight. I thought to myself, I can`t see it and I don`t know where it will land. Scared me to death. So I just took off running hoping I would not get hit with it. It came down not far from where I was standing and stuck halfway in the ground. Thank goodness I didn`t shoot myself. I never did that again.

This isn't accurate obviously, but he may have it backwards with weight. The heavier the bullet the farther it will travel at the same muzzle velocity. A problem with our troops in Afghanistan was the the enemy would lob bullets with the 7.62 x 39 AK round 122gr. While our .556 round at 69gr. Couldn't reach them. The bullet drop is greater with a heavier bullet but it still carries more energy. However the AK round has 200ft lbs more energy at the muzzle than the .556. He could run another test just testing weight.

A civil engineer once told me that any object launched, thrown, fired, etc. at a 45 degree angle will go farther than at any other angle. It sounded credible until I shot an arrow at 45 degrees while on a dry lakebed. Then, I increased the angle. And the arrows launched at a slightly steeper angle flew farther. Please explain if you know. FYI, if you use the term "further" in your answer, you're disqualified.
