How fast can a bicycle wheel spin? How fast do you think it will go before it breaks apart? The physics and G-forces of the wheel are going to me extreme! I love getting ideas for new videos from my viewers, so please leave a comment!

You need remote control of the motor. You should also have some kind of blast shield (similar to the Mythbusters). Ever seen their video of what a tire flying off a big-rig does? It is a lot heavier, but your speed is higher. Also, 400+ mph is getting into the range where if the metal did fail, it could puncture you like grenade fragments. Probably won't die, but it will do some damage. Remember also that doubling the speed multiplies the force (and damage it can do) by 4x. 10x speed is 100x damage, etc (squared relationship). Protect yourselves.

Despite the spokes being pretty thin and the rim being made of aluminium these wheels can bear quite heavy loads. When I am on longer trips I typically have 22kg of baggage with me plus several liters of water and also some food. My bike weighs 17kg, and myself more than 90. So the total weight is about 140kg of which maybe 20kg rest on the front wheel.

Conservation of angular momentum from the tires is keeping it from speed. Take that tire off of the 10 speed wheel and lock the derailer in one gear ( preferably high). More tension on the chain so it dont fly off.

Change the gear ratio to an easier gear, as spinning a bicycle wheel REALLY fast could use more power than you think as the wind resistance power cubes with speed. Even if it only takes say 50 watts to spin at 1000 rpm, then 2000 rpm needs 400 watts and 4000 rpm 3200 watts etc.

What failed the good wheel was you deleting the derailleur system. Put it back on so it can guide and tension the chain. The chain only came off because of that. And you might drill some holes in the base to peg it down for stability. Those spokes made a lot of wind noise at the higher speed without the tyre- maybe you could get some carbon fibre spoke covers or a full disc wheel to test to destruction? Use a small car motor so you can keep gearing it up until a good tyre explodes.

A more practical question that I've wondered about: How fast can the wheel spin under load, before they fail? How fast can you actually ride a bike before the bearings can no longer handle it?
@dominichines9996
@dominichines9996 2 жыл бұрын
Probably actually slightly *faster* since then the tire has a bit more pressure holding it inward. Only question is how much that would counteract the outward pull when it's not in contact with the ground.

I actually have 2 questions. 1. Are the spokes in equal standard tension? 2. Why is the tyre not inflated? Because it can affect its stability and gripping power onto the rim. I suppose these two are affecting the limit of the spinning speed of the wheel, right?

Replace the coaster brake hub with one from a 10 speed, but replace the derailer style gears with the single gear. I predict one of two outcomes: the chain fails or the centrifugal clutch on the engine fails. But before that happens, you might get a bare rim up to a thousand mph before the failure happens.

You need to make a much heavier sturdier rig, you should use a VW engine or a 22r engine out of a Toyota, maybe control it with a peddle or a line, the only reason I am suggesting that you use a 22r engine is because 1 they are cheap 2 they are absolutely indestructible and 3 they are super simple to get running without having to worry about mounting them in vehicles.

I'd try it with a known good, decent quality tire fully inflated so it's fully expanded to catch the bead area of the rim. Also, I'd stake that thing to the ground so you don't have to chase it when it fails. I think the goal is to see when the bike wheel fails, not when the motor dies of oil starvation on its side. Also, attach that break arm to the frame, if its moving around it may well be allowing some drag on the coaster brake shoes. I'd also make sure that thing is well lubed and adjusted, that way you know it failed because it saw its mechanical limits, not just due to it being poorly lubed or neglected. I would think that the most likely failure points would be either bearing failure leading to a thrown chain or broken axle, or separation of the rim at the weld or seam. Balance, or lack of it will be the downfall.

This is even more hilarious to me, because I'm designing & building powerful e-bikes, and now I'm in the position where I can't find much or any motorcycle tires that can fit bicycle wheel sizes, and bicycle tires don't have advertised load & speed ratings like like motorcycle & car tires do. I found e-bike specific tires like from Schwalbe marathon series, and a few e50 tires rated to handle 50kph. But that's it. So for any engine kit bikes, I gear for 50kph or whatever an e-bike tire is rated for. And for e-bikes, getting high voltage controllers and wiring batteries more in series means more voltage, means more top speed and rate-of-acceleration, and through a Cycle Analyst V3 or programmable controller, I can just set the maximum speed the motor will cut off at. So whether its engine bicycles or electric bicycles, I stay within the speed ratings of the tires, so I don't die or hurt innocent people, from a blown tire crash, but try to reach that rated top speed as soon as possible, and even climb steep hills at that speed. If you're wondering why don't I just build a motorcycle. I'm currently living in an apartment, and I'm not parking a bigger bike outside to be tampered with or stolen.

TO ACHIEVE HIGH SPEEDS ON A BICYCLE WHEEL YOU NEED TO: 1. Rotationally balance the wheel "perfectly", if the wheel is off balance by as little as 1 gram at high speeds the centrifugal forces will change the one gram to one once! This will cause the wheel to start oscillating like a sledgehammer swinging from the axle. 2. Use an airtight valve cap like those used on suspension shocks. Why? The centrifugal forces will cause the air valve core seal to open. Or just use a Presta air valve to lock down the air seal. 3. Use a super lightweight road tire with high count TPI, because the tire will want to expand at high speeds. 4. Use aero spokes for very obvious reasons. NOW GO FOR IT!

Neither of these guys has any clue of the potential energy they’re dealing with. When that thing self destructs, it’s going to be worse than a hand grenade and the shrapnel is going to maim and/or kill someone before you can possibly blink. Seeing it jump and rotate the blast radius in their direction, and they’re still shutting it off with their foot instead of devising any type of remote kill, even a 10 foot pole, tells me these fools are due for a serious injury in their future. Sucks because I had a good friend who died doing this type of shit, he even joked how he was surprised he lived as long as he had with all the reckless shit he did. Well one day his luck ran out and 15 years later it’s still a fucking shame.

MY HEART IS POUNDING JUST WATCHING! It would be great if you guys could do it again until the rim explodes. I have this page up on centrifugal force, and objects that spin like a top. I literally prove with engineering text book references to flywheels, that nothing can spin over 1000 mph without exploding. No material can handle that, since the min tensile strength required is 215,000 psi. You also need solidity to spin, a broken ball cannot spin. Thus, from an engineering standpoint, globe earth is a total impossibility. The crust is mostly basalt 1900 psi tensile strength, and it is all cracked up, underpinned by tectonic plates. When you factor in the weight of the behemoth globe, you get trillions of psi of stress around the equator. I found your video when I was looking up spinning objects exploding. I like the fact that the wheel has spokes, but ultimately, it will still explode. It would be cool to calculate how much compression tension the spokes create and compare it to the tensile strength of the rim material, and then see how fast it can go before exploding. It's very dangerous. But so far nobody has exploded anything that big. We will see how much difference the spokes make compared to the theoretical without spokes. What do you think? Here is my page on Blogger spin1.flat.wtf
