Ha ha I worked out the energy in a kilo of rubber travelling at that speed last week for the first vid...It is something else! I can't remember and don't want to do the math again but it was like 20 times the energy of a 45 bullet as it leaves the barrel. That cast case of the hub could easily have broken up at 12,000rpm or whatever..It would have simply taken his head off. Now I like the fact they play with danger, but of all the places to stand!!

@@martinda7446 it's not rocket science. Energy (in Joules) equals 0.5*m*v^2 (mass in kg, speed in m/s). The velocity of a point on the tyre is w*r (w wanna be omega, angular speed in 1/s). So after all, 2*pi*f*r (f is the frequency of the wheel spinning in 1/s), so it's easy to calculate let's say the outer parts of the tyre.

The problem with the bigger wheel is not weight, as that only affects acceleration but not the terminal velocity. The real problem is its bigger surface area leading to greater air resistance. There is a tradeoff here to consider in order to achieve the speed of sound. Using a larger wheel requires higher engine power due to greater air resistance, but the tire will be more likely to stay in one piece due to lower centripetal force (because of the lower rpm needed). Using a smaller wheel requires less engine power but the whole thing will probably self-destruct prematurely. It appears that one is most likely to succeed with a large wheel and a powerful engine.

So you do read the comments ;) There was a car back in 1997, ThrustSSC that break speed of sound 1,228 km/h I don't think normal engine and transmission will get to such high speeds, even when the wheel is not touching the ground , you will have to use helicopter turbine
@craig3.03 жыл бұрын
ThrustSSC did a hell of a lot of research into trying to make a wheel that could withstand that speed. I think they ended up using solid metal wheels, out of something with a great strength to weight ratio like magnesium, aluminum, or titanium, I can't remember which. The shape was very hard to design given 1990s engineering FEA software. Other things that influenced design were the facts that the wheels didn't have to drive the car or have much grip and that they were going to be run on a salt bed, so if they were too skinny, they would just dig in to the salt and the car would bottom out.
@olivialambert41243 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't the weight. The problem is that as the wheel spins faster the rubber expands to different diameters. This causes the wheel to vibrate which costs a lot of energy. Larger rubber means more force at the end and more vibration. A large wheel rim without a tire wouldn't vibrate as much and would get far more speed. More power with the rubber tires would just cause more vibrations and very little increase in speed. And more vibrations means more damage to the car as it spins.

@ChrisG-sj8hc3 жыл бұрын
how about a motor at both ends of the differential
@rhyswoodman67813 жыл бұрын
That would double the power but it would also HALF the speed. The speed of the pinion (where wheel is attached) comes from holding one side of the diff still.
@Mark_Bridges3 жыл бұрын
@@rhyswoodman6781 I think you have it backwards. You'll get more pinion speed by spinning both ends of the diff in the same direction, as Chris suggested. If Garage54 welded the diff rather than holding one end still, they'll get double pinion speed (assuming the engine can spin at the same speed) plus less wear and friction (and energy loss) in the diff.
