Marvel Snap is, as far as I can tell, a pretty good game. I say "as far as I can tell," because five hours in, they still refuse to let me play it! From a ludicrously long tutorial to hours of forced bot matches, this game does everything in its power to make me hate it.

I faced the same frustrations when i first started playing the game but after a few days it starts to feel more competitive as you lose more matches. I recommend playing the game as intended. Dont worry about card pools and deck building, just be fascinated everytime you see a new card. Use whatever cards that has been given to you in your own deck. By limiting the way you get cards you are forced to learn each and every card and you are encouraged to use it in whatever deck you want.

I mostly agree with this review. I will say that I feel like the game is fun enough without the full playset of cards. Unless you are a deckbuilder there is enough mindgames in each game to make you forget about those sweet future decks. However I think you're being too kind about why they're slowly giving us cards. Once Pool 1 is over they know we know how to play the game. It's just a retention tactic to keep casual players going for a very long Time without having to release big expansions. Which is even worse IMO.

Well, here's the thing: when I say "20 hours," I'm more or less describing finally getting out of pool one. At the rate I'm going, that's about how long it's going to take, and it's an absolutely absurd amount of time to wait before you get to what most people consider "the game proper." The game's already a bust before I can even see that concern, and I think it's telling that pool one is actually artificially padded out with more currency levels than later pools. The game wants to keep you there as long as possible. Overall, I think the battle pass system is probably more efficient at getting you a full collection of cards than, say, grinding your dailies for an hour to get one booster pack in Hearthstone. But here again, the way it's set up isn't the worst, but also definitely not the best.

@@FirstFive 20h is about right yeah, but I wouldn't say the game doesn't start before that. And pool 2 is so slow that missing some cards from pool 1 is exactly the same as being in pool two for 5-10 hours. At least in pool 1 I kept experimenting and modifying my decks with new cards. In pool 2 I'm only playing 2 decks.

That intro describes why I only play Deckbuilders and not CCGs, it feels way better to have a game where you build new decks quickly and in a fun way every time you play the game - rather than spending a long time grinding (or paying) for a deck to then just use the same cards over and over.

I think the progression system is the "make or break" for most people who try this game. On one hand, I like the pool system as it gives everyone almost the same cards and equal opportunities to build good decks. On the other hand, I agree that it sucks to be in pool 1/2, wanting certain cards that are in pool 3 and knowing you wont even have a chance to get them in a while. The progression through cosmetic upgrades is a cool idea, but the game explains very little of how it works. I'm sad that you had such a negative experience with bots and the overall feel of the game, but at least I think you expressed your points clearly and tried to give the game a chance.

It also sucks once you start playing against people with pool 3 cards and their decks just do way crazier things than yours.

Hilarious video this time. Even though I couldn't follow what was going on during the gameplay, I find you explained what the overall concept was pretty well. As much as it might suck for you, I enjoy your "not worth the time" videos the most. I get a good feeling knowing that someone is doing the work for me.

You make fair points, but I enjoyed the core experience enough and now after hitting rank 40 I'm always playing real people, even a few which have very questionable names. I love many TCG/CCGs but right now there isn't another game where I can say I have a thoughtful and enjoyable PVP experience in 3-5 minutes. If that gets replicated anywhere else I'm there. I hope they can keep up the community and give new modes, because otherwise the game will die.

I've been enjoying the game a lot. I actually enjoy the laughably long amount of time the game just puts you against bots and you get to have a 95% winrate. I don't enjoy playing card games very competitively, and probably would have actually played MTGA or Hearthstone - in which I had hundred of hours but mostly hung out at low (as in bad) ranks - longer if I could just build my collection playing against bots. I still find it satisfying trying to figure out the strongest plays even though I know even the wrong moves won't result in a loss. I imagine once my winrate drops to 50% in Snap I'll stop playing lol. Maybe a weird perspective on a "competitive" genre, but I just enjoy dinking around and playing cards, so a card game this casual has been perfect for me so far. I certainly can see why if you want more out of the deckbuilding and competition, then all the things I enjoy would be a turnoff. It should probably be optional so we could both have it our way.

I've seen a lot of articles citing all the stuff that frustrates me as the very things that makes Snap good, so I can definitely sympathize. But yeah, it'd be a lot better if one could opt in or out, especially the vs AI stuff. The fact that my experience has been more or less decided for me only makes all the restrictions feel all the worse.

Nice video thanks so much! Honestly I'm loving the game and I'm fairly hooked. Some positives that I feel make the card building easier was the missions system, i.e. dailies and weeklies and the other battle pass. Both help to add cards to your deck especially early. The games mechanics and how they encapsulate heroes in a card are done so well. This isn't a game like runetera where you sit for hours playing in a sitting, but more the pull your phone out while on a break kind of game for me (although I am having some hour or so sessions ATM). For me it's one of the most enjoyable card games out there and I'd advise anyone to keep playing as you do get cards pretty easily till say pool 3.

Yee i feeled the same way when i started playing marver snap, those bots were so annoyingly dumb xD And matchmaking is made 2 fer Its made to match you with people that have same collection level like you, so no metter how good are you you will face players that have amount same nubers of cards as you.. And yes people abuse that by not ubgradeing cards and they reach the max rank with begginer deck.. i find out that 2 late and ubgraded my cards so i miss on free rewards in last season... anyway cool video

Hi! I have a question that I need your opinion on. Lately, whenever I’m playing games on a limited time budget, I always feel like I have to rush through these games because I feel like I have to get through as many content as possible before my time budget runs out. Oftentimes, it feels like I’m gambling my time here; “is this side quest gonna be worth it, or will it just be a dud?” and “this side quest doesn’t have good rewards, I think I’m gonna skip this, despite how everyone said it’s a good side quest”. That feeling sucks, man. How do you deal with this feeling?
@FirstFive
@FirstFive Жыл бұрын
Well, there are a few ways to look at this, none of which is the answer alone, but taking what you like from them might help. 1. You look at it less as "I need to finish this game in x hours" and more as "I need to find games that can be finished in the amount of time I have." That can obviously be easier said than done as basically your only tools to judge that before the fact are here and howlongtobeat, but it's not impossible, especially if you don't bother with whatever the AAA market is insisting on putting out this month. This is my preferred way of doing it and obviously the entire idea behind First Five. 2. Just make peace with not finishing a game, which is something I've gotten a lot better at doing, especially games that aren't really grabbing me or just ended up "enjoyable while I'm playing them" 7/10 nothing adventures. Feeling a little guilty at leaving things unfinished is an instinct I've had to unlearn, but it's easier for me to do this than to resist the pull of the new shiny thing everyone is talking about. 3. If you're having fun but hit your time limit, just skip whatever looks cool next month and keep playing what you already have. In essence, just don't budget, and the game's done when it's done. If it takes three months, it takes three months. I personally struggle to do this, but I feel that's how most people operate and you're certainly under no obligation to play everything that comes out just because it came out. Being choosier with your games is also an option. I suppose the short version of all of that is "Marie Kondo that shit." If you're having fun with the game, there's no harm in continuing to play it and just using next month's budget too. If you're not having fun, shrug and move on to something else.

@@FirstFive that’s a really in-depth answer! Yeah, we have to contend with the possibility of not finishing every game that we play. It breaks my heart saying that, but you’re right. T.T That’s a pretty comprehensive writeup, man, thank you for your answer!

Definitely mirrored my experience. I'm really impressed with the core systems/gameplay I got so sick of how limiting it was and how I kept winning even as I purposefully built my deck with dysfunctional cards so I could level up more efficiently. I think I lost one maybe two games in the hours I played... Back to Gwent for me!

I mean, I strongly disagree with a lot of points. I think the starter decks are really good and fun, there's definitely a few archetypes you can build and a lot of tweaking the exact cards. And I find each match feels different with the different, powerful lane effects. Frankly I think the pool system is great, and addresses the problems you talk about. Specifically, that it ensures that you get complete a full "deck" that's intended to be together every so often rather than just paying for a random card from the entire game's pool, which would make finding synergies way harder (the way most tcgs are). It's not like I'm not playing the "real" game, I'm playing the pool 1 or pool 2 meta, and there will be a different meta later. It's not like the pool 3 meta is the only real one. Also they're putting in a system to get specific cards (for free ingame earned currency) to make it better. If anything they should have even more, smaller pools along the way to ensure you get combo cards together more often. Finally, I definitely remember playing against bots, but I feel like that drops off pretty quickly. I'm very sure I haven't played a single bot in a long time (judging by player names / skill - bots are also usually named marvel characters). Finally I really respect the inability of pay to win in a genre of game that is so heavily based around having to buy new, better cards. I think maybe that some hardcore players should have the option to pay to be skipped ahead all the way to pool 3 / all the cards, but I'm really glad that I don't have to match with people with full collections and get stomped by cards I'll likely never buy/collect (like every other tcg), and they can just play each other while I enjoy a "full" collection of pool 1 or pool 2 cards.

It is worth the time, if you get through the initial 20-30 levels or so. Ultimately this is way way way better than things like hearthstone where it's just straight loot boxes. While respecting your opinion, i think first 5 hours don't represent the overall experience in any game, since no game nowadays is tailored toward 1 particular type of audience, but they rather want to play safe and branch out as much as possible
@7643764
@7643764 Жыл бұрын
Try hearthstone battlegrounds, there's literally 0 grind. It's deckbuilding distilled into what's fun about it. Every match it's about quickly building a broken deck and having it compete with other similar decks in an autobattler style, but with cool cardbuilding mechanics and design.

@FirstFive
@FirstFive Жыл бұрын
The funny thing is that TCGs that are more "short term" totally exist! You can build a solid deck in just a few short hours in Legends of Runeterra, and there's an old indie called Infinity Wars that went and made its entire collection free. Marvel Snap pitched itself as being a part of this camp, and I'm always on the lookout for games that take traditionally long genres and make them more accessible, but alas, here we are.

I think you play bots until rank 40? And if matchmaking takes too long it will place you against a bot. But i will tell you that the endgame high rank bots are no joke they actually play meta decks ans can roll even the best players
@FlorianRachor1
@FlorianRachor1 Жыл бұрын
Yea you are playing against AI roughly till you are ranked 30. And I have to disagree, this game is targeted at casual players, so the system eases them into card game mechanics and it's pretty much perfect. And you don't want to hear that, but no most people can't be trusted with the full mechanics right away. The result is just people net decking, having no idea what the cards do and how the synergies are. I haven't played a card game yet that makes it easier and more straightforward to build your own decks. And if you really are someone who is going to play this game for 5hrs, you are hardly the target group. These games are intended to make people play hundreds of hours, not a few. Also ever tried to suggest GWENT to a friend? Good luck. It's probably the best game on the market mechanic-wise, but I guarantee you 90% are just quitting in the first 5 hours because they have no idea what's going on. You have to be super dedicated to stick with those types of games.
