In this video, sponsored by HP Omen, Rich checks out the mobile version of the GTX 1070. Is it as powerful as the desktop GTX 1070? Can you overclock it? Combined with a G-Sync screen, how good is the 4K gameplay experience?

Indeed. Even more, when you undervolt. Had my GTX 1080 Gaming X from MSI running at 0.8 volt with 1831 Mhz (instead 1.043 Volt and 1949 Mhz), but bumped the Memory from 5000 to 5500 Mhz. (fps dropped only by 5-7%~, don't notice anything thanks to G-Sync) GPU alone consumes only 125~ Watt power during Witcher 3. That's lower, than a RX 470, at almost double the Performance. My older GTX 1060 at 0.8 Volt went down to 85~ Watt. My whole PC with 2 HDDs, 1 SSD, i7 6700k @ 4.4 Ghz consumed around 150~ Watt during Rise of the Tomb Raider when i tested it. That's around the same Watt, a PS4 (Pro) consumes.
@Darkseth88
@Darkseth88 7 жыл бұрын
Evan VMR Yes, you basicly have 2 options there, which are very similar. Both use MSI Afterburner. 1. Use Afterburner, and see the graph "Power%". Example: You have a stock GTX 1080 with a Powerlimit of 180 Watt. If Power% hits 100%, it consumes 180 watt. If Power% hits 50% only, the GPU consumes around 90 watt. easy calculation. My 1080 MSI Gaming X has a Powertarget of 240 watt, so 50% Power% would be 120 watt. 2. HWInfo64. This baby can give you more sensor info, than you ever thought you have in your PC :P And this Tool has the abillity, to "send" those sensor data over to Riva Tuner Statistics server (which is the On Screen Display from Afterburner). HWInfo64 has the ability to read out the watt usage, not just from your GPU, but also CPU package, or also Ram modules. You can find this in sensor tab (not summary), scroll down to GPU, and there is GPU Power with a small Lightning symbol. It can show you the Current watt usage from the GPU alone, Min, and Max numbers too, and also Average. (those are teh same numbers i would get with method #1, calculating the Power%. Press Settings there, Tab "OSD (RTSS)", scroll down to "Total GPU Power". Either the normalized or non-normalized (not sure whats the difference, but it's only 1~ watt off). Click it, pres "Show Calue in OSD", done. Then you will get this shown in MSI Afterburner OSD, below the Afterburner own data. If you want to use more data out of HWInfo64, they will all be in the same Line. So you can adjust that with "Line:" and "Column:" to your taste. i Personally let it show "GPU Power" (which is the value in %) and "Total GPU Power" (which is the Watt value), so i have both there. Edit: If you rightclick on the systemtray symbol --> Settings, you can activate "Minimize Sensors on startup", that's the autostart.

Richard, for future videos of this sort, I recommend you examine the impact "world detail" or "draw distance" settings have on the graphics card. These settings typically are more CPU intensive and won't hurt the GPU much at all. You can leave these cranked up to reduce LOD pop in as much as possible while still maintaining good performance. The settings you should look to lower are post processing effects. This setting in almost every game I've played, hits the GPU with a solid 10-20% GPU usage yet provides almost no immediate visual improvements. This setting usually involves motion blur and bloom effects. Something we can easily live without and get much better performance.

In short, GTX 10xx cards are full power cards, unlike in the past with the freaking M versions. I thought it was well known. Yes laptops with 1070s are quite as good as a desktop of the same specs. Now, also great is that the first news just came about laptops with RX 580s, and I can't wait. They will also be full power cards, albeit not 1070 performance, but sure as hell cheaper

Something I don't get when DF discussing v-sync stuff: if I choose borderless fullscreen most games having variable frame rate between 30 to 60 fps don't have screen tearing. I admit it is more comfortable to have a consistent 60 fps experience, but I don't have a screen tearing in most part of games. So what advantage has g-sync in these games?

@gageracer
@gageracer 7 жыл бұрын
I open it on specific games only so no effects on windows or any media player etc.The whole reason i use sync methods is to get rid of the tearings.Vsync gives huge input lag while fast sync gives little.Fast Sync does work below 60 fps for tearing.My latest example is Quantum Break.On 970 it does not play well without upscaling is on.I get 30-40 fps on high settings and it clears any tearing in that range. Still won't use both for any multiplayer game for input latency.

What's up with the memory usage difference between desktop and mobile 1:38 and 2:05? I hope there's another video in the works for CPU and find out how many frames can the mobile chip push before bottlenecking the 1070 in modern titles. It wouldn't been great to see temperatures get more attention. PS: Sponsored content means more products like these get proper benchmarking here unlike other channels who test CPU performance on 4K with max settings with a GPU that isn't the highest end.

Hmm, this makes me wonder if I’ll have to upgrade sooner than I’d hoped to. I’m running an Alienware 15 R2 with an i7 6700HQ and a 1070 inside the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which should theoretically provide the same performance give or take as a laptop with a soldered 1070 on the motherboard. Only problem is I’ve been experiencing some slight delay from when I hover the mouse over a desktop icon to when it actually registers that it’s hovered over the icon. That, and I notice some games are getting bottlenecked by the CPU at 1080p even with everything maxed out, which should in theory put more stress on the GPU. I know that on all cores, the CPU goes up to 3.1 GHz and it’s two core boost is 3.3, so I’m almost wondering if the 300 mHz boost on all cores would actually help, going from Skylake to Kaby Lake (3.1 to 3.4). I don’t know, I’m just conflicted. If I go with a desktop, most of the portability aspect will be gone, but I’ll get a better experience, whereas I prefer the portability and usability of a laptop, but I know they’re weaker in general unless I go for an overclocked CPU, and that introduces its own problems if the cooling isn’t sufficient. That, and I’ve really only been in the PC gaming space since I bought my laptop last year in April (right before Pascal launched because I was stupid and didn’t pay attention to the rumors, so the onboard graphics is a 980m 8 GB). I don’t know, I’ll figure it out in the next couple of weeks I think, but I’ll take any input I can get as well.

It's for the professional market first yeah, but think Maxwell and Pascal, Nvidia didn't take long to release consumer gpus only 2/3 months later pretty much. If they come out in september or october as expected, they are likely to pull out consumer tier gpus for january. And Volta might have 50-60% faster performance than Pascal, it's a quite a big deal. I'm personnally keeping my G751JY with GTX980M for the next 6 months, Pascal mobile is great, but I would be mad to buy a laptop with a 1070 or 1080 and see Volta coming out 6-8 months later. Unless you really need a new rig, I think it's worth the wait, especially considering that Volta will last much longer than Pascal

Actually you don't get full performance , I believe it was around 80% but you can run a test on userbenchmark, and compare your score to the average and the highest. My sager's laptop 1070 came at a base clock of 1911mhz. And wow I've never experienced a CPU bottleneck even on CPU taxing games like black desert, as my cpu never goes above 60% neither GPU.

Many TVs now support 24, 30, and 60Hz, but also 50Hz. I think you should do a video on the benefits of locking games to 50fps, and changing your refresh rate to 50Hz. The results are almost as smooth as 60fps, and many people may not even realize it's an option.

Granted my monitor is 144hz so tearing isn't really bad, but g sync keeps everything smooth and tear free and changes in framerate that are less than 20fps aren't really felt when i'm above 90fps. at 60fps target it feels smooth within 10fps. Hi, you are one of my favourite channels and I would like to ask you a question.I have collected some money and I want to buy a ps4 pro together with a 4k tv.I'm going to buy the second one either way.However I don't think I will purchase the ps4 pro because I've heard that the ps5 is coming next year and I'm afraid it will be a waste of money.What do you believe I should do,buy a ps4 pro or wait until the ps5 is released.Thank you for your time.

Hey guys quick question is this card still worth it in 2021? Im buying a second hand asus laptop with gtx 1070 and i7 7700hq for 1000$( keep in mind this is here in Australia, prices are absolutely absurd for laptops)

just one thing... you tested cpu temps WITHOUT stressing the gpu, which is not what would be happenign during gaming.

I dunno about anyone else, but my display/gfx card lets me input custom refresh rates along with resolutions. I played Doom in 1080p at 75hz and I'm currently playing Just Cause 3 at 1440p 50hz. Also been experimenting with 1800p. Do most displays require the use of 3rd party software and such to do this? Is my TV just special or something?

I have tried g-sync and let me say you that it is not game changer my laptop has it with a 75hz panel and it's okay but I don't really see why I would pay an extra for g-sync display it's great but not for 200$ more

That's great but I would only get a laptop for gaming if I absolutely have to. It's better to go with a gaming desktop and a cheaper laptop for lighter tasks on the go if it's an option for you.

4k @60hz is a bit wasteful on this laptop, with specs like this a 1440p screen at 144hz would have been a better sweet spot

Great video but it begs the question of why we don't have this kind of tech in a handheld/portable console in 2017. Instead of using mobile ARM chips they should use laptop grade tech in them.

Something is very wrong with this laptop 1070. My laptop 1070 runs stock above 1645Mhz boost, and when overclocked it boosts to speeds around 1825-1850Mhz under load in BF1. In most cases I can safely assume with my 6700K CPU in my laptop I am matching or exceeding some desktop 1070 rigs. My screen is also 5ms 120Hz 1080p so my rig will laptop rig will last years longer.

freesync essentially the same thing... but way cheaper 😊. also I gotta ask about the benefits of over clocking, I mean with the limited cooling ability of laptops throttling will be the bane of your life... what's the point of over clocking when it burns like a furnace and throttles performance back because of it? the sweet spot in laptops is not the high end of the low end and it's certainly not one with a 4k screen because theres no laptops laptop capable of taking advantage of it properly. the sweet spot is the middle ground around this configuration but minus the essentially there so you can say it does 4k screen. 1070 on a 1080p screen on a laptop that's your sweet spot right there
