How To Make A Radio Hit with Portugal. The Man's 'Feel It Still' and Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know'
Portugal. The Man could never have predicted “Feel It Still” to become the astronomical hit that did. Over 150 million views on KZfaq. 400 million listens on Spotify. It won a Grammy, that means something right?
It was the most-Shazamed song in the country for seven weeks running. And that’s because if you’re still listening to the radio, you would have heard it across nearly every format. It was a crossover hit. A song that transcends genre, so widely accessible you can play it on nearly any contemporary radio station and it just works.
It was the group’s first chart topping single. Going on to conquer the top spot on 6 Billboard charts and almost two others.
Radio Songs
Pop Songs
Adult Pop Songs
Alternative Songs
Adult Alternative Songs
Dance/Mix Show Airplay
Taking Portugal. The Man from indie darlings to Top 40 giants in just weeks.
And these charts are important. Labels use these rankings to entice radio stations to play these songs even more. You see, stations need to retain listeners to keep the advertising dollars coming in and the best way keep people listening is to play the biggest hits around. It’s why you hear the same tracks on rotation all day long. The more a track plays, the higher that rank goes up and the more a single sells. And the loop continues until listener fatigue kicks in and is replaced by something new.
Since 2003, there have only been 12 songs to top 6 or more Billboard charts, including “Feel It Still”
Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (2005)
Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" (2006)
Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring Kimbra (2012)
Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell (2013)
Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” (2014)
John Legend's "All of Me" (2014)
Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" (2014)
Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" (2014)
Adele’s “Hello” (2014/15)
Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Bruno Mars (2015)
Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber (2017)
You’ll see some familiar names from frequent hit makers, but only one of these songs has topped the same six charts as Feel It Still.

I've seen a couple of comments pointing out that this track is closer to 160 bpm, not 79. In Middle 8's defense, though, many bpm trackers - Virtual DJ, Serato, etc. - have trouble with tracks in certain BPM ranges. That's why those programs come with "x2" and "/2" correctors. Trap and drum & bass are notorious for having their tempos halved or doubled by these programs. So, I'm not surprised the tempo is off here. It's an easy enough mistake to make.

I remember seeing Portugal. The Man as a indie punk band opening up for some of my favorite artists back in the early 2000s. I've seen them live in a room of 10 or so people. Its cool that they landed No. 1 on the charts with "Feel it Still".
@PresidentHeartbeat
@PresidentHeartbeat 6 жыл бұрын
The most important thing you need to land a hit in the charts is production. Feel It Still sounds nothing like PTM has ever recorded before production-wise. The drums sound completely different, a lot more beat-heavy and danceable than usual, and there are a ton of little electronic elements and vocal shifts used too which is very common in pop songs, while the vocals are recorded and layered very cleanly and polished. Also the instrumentation is very important - if they replaced the brass section in the middle of the chorus with a guitar or so, it would probably lose the appeal for many listeners. Brass elements have also been used in some other pop songs recently like Dua Lipa's New Rules.

Another EXCELLENT video! Been watching your channel from day 1 and I am so impressed with your content. You have a knack for covering bands I love as well. Having followed them for 10 years now it is wild seeing Portugal The Man get launched in to massive top 40's fame. I do kind of like that, amazing hits can't fully be engineered. There are guidelines, production flourishes (I think the production was a huge part of Feel It Still's success), but no hard and fast rules and formula - it all comes down to an organic moment of inspiration.

I think a often overlocked aspect of this song's success, was it being featured in the ad for Apple's iPad Pro. This super catchy song was aired all over TV, played on KZfaq, advertised on social media, etc. The reason why it was Shazamed so much is because it was played all over the place and the song really didn't see major success until after the start of the Ad campaign.

loved the breakdown. two thoughts i had: feel it still is 79 BPM but the drumming gives the feel of double time, which would put it just under 160, still in the mold of a lot of these other hit songs. i am constantly speeding up and slowing down the BPM on my tracks to find the right fit for mood and danceability. i think 80-90 BPM is becoming more acceptable as hip hop has started to permeate the higher end of the charts. it certainly easier on diction, it's bouncy in a way that a track at say 120 BPM might feel a little breathless, and it lends itself well to being sped up in a remix, which we've seen become a huge part of a hit song's vitality, even giving it a second life sometimes.

before the song became a hit(when it was still being made), Portugal the the man came to my school, and offered our jazz band a trip to their studio to practice the song there. we eventually had a concert at the school with them, but that was before the song technically came out. that is probably one of the reasons why it became an instant hit too. look up rrms, or ron russel middle school and portugal the man. something should show up.

Interesting stuff. Old man here of 25yrs+ in Radio. I think there's another "grabber" to add to the list. Start the song right into the chorus - Brick House, All about that Bass, You got nothing I want (Cold Chisel), Can't buy me love, Paperback Writer, Ain't no sunshine, Rag Doll (Aerosmith) Janies got a gun, Best of you... On air staff love that sh*t.

I remember when Portugal the man was a tiny band. Me and my family have always been huge fans. We were so surprised and happy when feel it still took off. If you liked feel it still, you will love their other stuff. Check them out.

Something I noticed between seemingly out of nowhere radio hits, they tend to have a single catchy riff/bassline that's prevalent and on its own in the beginning and the songs tend to be less compressed with only a few distinct instruments/sounds.

Great analysis! I love how these features describe how a song becomes a hit. However, it is these same features that cause a song to last fairly short. Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen breaks about every rule of becoming a hit. Way longer than four minutes, written by only four men (although we could state it was mostly written by Freddie alone), it doesn't have a danceable tempo, it doesn't have a chorus, the song title isn't mentioned once, the intro isn't under 20 seconds. So the conclusion? Want to make a hit? Follow these guidelines. Want to make an icon? Break all rules and deliver something nobody has ever heard before.

Some more, 1000 years, just a fool, pushers party Also the whole album "satanic satanist" Actually... just download all their albums. They are great. And if you can, go see them live. They are incredible live. They change up their songs and play classics that transition into their own songs. More funk when they are live as well.
