Fencing is one of the fastest sports in the world, and to the un-trained eye, it’s hard to follow.
With Olympic gold medalist, Olga Kharlan, we slow down the action and look at the fascinating history of this sport, including how 30,000 deaths changed its rules forever.

You don’t really need all the gear to start out, most clubs that have beginner classes lends gear out, but if you’re looking at sticking around then yes you’ll need your own gear

Been fencing for 10 years and I still love it. It has fewer age barriers than most other sports and has events specifically for 50 year olds and above. The clubs I have been to have loaner equipment for first timers as well. Plus 99.9% of the people are super nice, even the ones that give no quarter while fencing.

I'm part of Team GBR for Sabre and I run a new club in London. It was not said in the video but fencing is one of 4 sports that have been in the Olympics since day one. It is not just our reactions that are quick it is also our mind and way of thinking, especially in Sabre. It's a combat sport where it's not about who can hit the hardest or in a certain way, we only need to flick the vest to score a point. You have to be disciplined but imaginative, decide or react, let your mind flow but be cunning and out-think the other person: "build your match" as we would say. Almost like a super-fast game of chest. The video was great and I hope it gets lot's of people more interested in this fantastic sport!

I fence for more then like a year now and I still don't own gear. When you start at a fencing club you can just borrow all the needed gear, so don't let that stop you. It's an amazing sport and I would recommend it to everyone!

So I have gotten to fence before and it was at camp, and let me just say I'll never forget that experience. It was amazing and I just wish I could have done it more in my lifetime. For anyone reading this who has never gotten to experience fencing; I highly recommend it. Even if you only get to do it once, it's a life changing experience. Like the video said, a childhood dream.

Not sure how old you are now but it’s not too late! If you want to fence more fence more! While fencing is an energetic sport there is a lot of mental strategy in it compared to other sports that are pure athleticism. Some of the best fencers ever in the veteran bracket barely move at all! They learn to read what you’re going to do and have their own strategies to deal with it. You go for an attack and they see it 10 miles off and are like “lol no *parry riposte*”. It’s also just good for health. If you want to , do it again! You’d be surprised how many fencing clubs there are in places you didn’t realise!

Fencing is the perfect COVID-19 sport, all participants are 6 feet away and wearing masks. The time is NOW for fencing!

To fence you start as a beginner doing a course at a fencing club. Equipment for beginner's is provided at all the clubs I know of. In that regard, to start fencing is the same as any other sport. Equipment is available for free at my club to any member that needs it.

unfortunatelly not in all clubs and/or only for beginners. I have been fencing for years but since I outgrew my childhood equipment, the amount of clubs I can join fell drastically. I rly want to get all of it back, but atm I don't have an opportunity to by full kit straight away, especially when many serious clubs in London aren't provident any for non-beginners.

Don't worry. I'm 56 and came back to fencing last year, after 28 years. The dream never went away. Just listen to the sound of two blades, was enough for me, to came back to my first love.

@@AndyMBurgess If you enjoyed Olympic fencing then maybe you should also look into HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). It's the root martial art that Olympic fencing evolved out of but it maintains the use of more historical techniques and weapons, such as longsword and rapier (to name a few). If you're based in London there are several quality HEMA clubs you could approach.

Fencing is extremely fun! When I tried it my local YMCA was running cheap classes which covered all the gear you needed. I am a mixed martial arts practitioner and can really vouch for the technique and speed fencing taught me.

I have millennium of knighthood and crusader history in my family (Order of Santiago), since around 1100 AD. And unfortunately due to past surgeries I wasn't able to serve in the U.S Military. However, though I found another way to continue my service to the people of this world, through the medical field. I still have an undying passion to be a warrior. And fencing, as a combat sport has allowed me to vent that out of my system. Truly a beautiful and historic combat sport.

@RedBull there are so many thing to discuss in this video. At first Thanks for this video! I love it. And I am a historical fencer with Longswords and Shields and even Longer Longswords :D So just let me know if you are in Munich to show you something about Historical Fencing! The very very first Book which has been discovered so far about fencing is the I.33. Its a German fencing manual dating to the 1320s. It currently rests in the holdings of the Royal Armouries at Leeds, United Kingdom. It contains oldest extant treatise on Medieval martial arts from as we know nowadays as Olympic Fencing originated. The sword went through a lot of changes and adjustments due to use (civil and military). It evolved from a Arming Sword to Longsword, to Rapier and Sabres and to Epees. Therefore there is only a stick and some safety glassses needed to practice fencing. There are super nice Sabre Simulators from Foam. The entry is easy und super fun If you want to know more about Historical Fencing just let me know!

Great video! As someone else mentioned, adding a betting aspect would probably help. I also would love to see some sort of tech in the suits that lights up when a point is earned. It's so hard to visually catch when contact is made, but if there were a thin layer of LED lights in the protective gear that lit up in that spot, it could make it more compelling to watch.

Speaking as an armorer in the sport...no. We don't need ANOTHER layer of expensive kit that can fail. At Olympic and World Cup events, there are LED lights in the masks on the side to indicate when a hit is landed. For lower level events, there's a cable physically connecting the fencer to a reel with 20 meters of cable in a spring-loaded drum, and that is connected to a scoring box (which can be seen under the shield in the middle of the strip when he's fencing Olga).

@@samsignorelli I’m not suggesting anything to add weight at all, I understand the existing layers involved. It would have to be super thin, but to indicate a specific location- not just that a hit is landed. It might be better as an AR-type overlay in any sort of TV broadcast instead though. That way viewers can follow along better. Sort of how NFL games will add the line of scrimmage so people at home can follow along with the action better.

I love fencing. But the first day we got to practice with sabre, we were one person short so I had to practice with the Dutch sabre champion. Guy was using his wrong hand (right) for better practice for me and I still didn't get more than a single hit of which he clearly let me 😅 but srsly this sport is amazing.

I hope it will be more popular in the next jears. I've been training for 6 years and there aren't very good clubs in Berlin, so it's very difficult to get better. If we had more good people it would be easier to train. If i want to be better later i have to move away from Berlin. Sometimes that makes me really sad because I want to get better but cant.

I always wanted to fence ... but you had to have an opponent. So decided on another sport. I did watch the sweedish olympic team practising in Ulivi stadion back in the early 1970,s was a treat to watch.

Look at all the eSports, especially DotA 2 big tournaments have these "newbie streams", where the casters really explain what is happening in the game, unlike in the normal broadcast, where they cast expecting the audience to know all the basics and even a bit deeper understanding of the game. But luckily we have the internet. I also think that Red Bull is doing really great work for the youth of the world bringing up these different unique hobby possibilities!

I don't see how it's not as accessible in cost. You can get an extremely basic practice set for about $100 USD. Yes it's more than a soccer ball or anything in our usual realm of sports. It's more the ability to find gear and a place to practice with someone. Fencing was a great time and hobby when I was part of a club. But as anything else, the deeper you go the more you spend.

Dude the high school I go to used to have fencing matches in the hallways back in the 90's. Its a tiny private Christian school and evidently the teachers did know about it for like 2 months and then they finally made it a school elective. I wish I had gone there during that time.

It really is a fun sport. And I agree people should try it. I had a blast taking a semester course in college. If people better understood it, it really could be a popular sport. It's fun to watch and it's even more fun to do.

The most simple way to make it easier to watch would be to alternate who has right of way from the start and light the strip up maybe amber for who currently can score. It would change depending on a failed attack or parry of course. This is a cost effective way of making the game more viewer friendly. It's not perfect I know.

I love fencing and it should be more popular, but historiically, there's not concense in where did it began, the firts manuscript teaching fencing is from the XIV century, and it's from Germany, its called the Walpurgis Fechtbuch manuscript, or MS I. 33. Later, a lot of manuscript were done principally to noble aman, and in the XVII and XIX centuries there were manuals for soldiers. The weapons thar now olimpic fencing use correspond to smallsword, (probably french tradition), and military saber (probably french or british). The most renowned hitorica manuals/manuscripts are from Germany, Italy, Spain and France later on. Here comes Hitorical fencing or HEMA, that uses a lot of different weapon to practice.

Gotta say definitely prefer fencing matches with more clashing of the blades. It's simply not as fun when it's just, jump forward recklessly and first to hit wins. Seen this in a lot of tournaments and I've gotten so bored of it that I just stopped watching tournaments. Had to quit fencing too but that's unrelated

There's a common misconception that fencing is still a sport reserved for the affluent. But in reality the sport has become more acesible through the help of foundations such as the Peter Westbrook Foundation which provide free training and equipment to people of varying socioeconomic levels.

Equipment is not really a problem. At list I don't see it this way. It's the floor fees and membership fees that clubs have to charge to even survive and pay rent. In NY it's pretty hard.

Wish this sport was more popular in Ireland, at least outside of Dublin because I know places like Galway have a rich history in dueling, sure the regional flag is literally an eagle with a sword Edit 2 years later: I am now a fencer I started with Connacht in April 2023, best decision ever
