At the Silverstone and French Grand Prix, we saw Lando Norris' pedals driving around the circuit with Formula 1's new and improved pedal camera, but how does the camera actually work?
It comes from a small pinhole lens with the box containing the image sensor behind, with three mini LED’s attached to the camera housing, which in total weighs just 62 grams!
Just like last season when the visor camera was tested also at the Belgian Grand Prix, this is now the next step Formula 1 are developing with the hope to roll this out to all drivers come next season. The difference though with this angle, is that we’re now getting the reverse view looking towards the driver from behind the pedals, rather than facing forward like before.

The visor camera was first used in 1994 at Spa. And I definetly think that the 90s had the most camera angle variety ever, feels like every race the car engineers just said lets stick the camera here for no reason

As much as I love their creativity with new angles, I really want them to improve the t-cam. Something like the Indycar one with a wider angle lens that crops in but moves around would be dope

Matt you should go to the Singapore grand Prix to see how the street circuit works and how the light projector are installed and how many Marshall are there in the circuit and how the handle the accident around the circuit

Doesn't the camera on top with the antenna have some kind of active cleaning? I was trying to find an example on how it works. Often dirt is seen moving sideways as a lens cover seems to rotate to a cleaner surface.

For whatever reason, Twitter decided to put your post about this video on my tl today. This is a really interesting video. You say in the video that most cars can only broadcast one video feed at a time. Is that true also for the FIA? I wonder if that is why they have to wait until after the race to investigate some possible penalties.

Some cars can broadcast two signals, such as when we see the forward facing camera with the rear wing looking like rear camera in the graphics. But like you mentioned yes this is also true with the FIA who will need to download the locally recorded files on the car itself to be able to review all the angles from an event!

I hate that the overlay (not the pedal camera) that is over the halo showing some car stuff like speed and pedal work keeps showing the braking input as full or nothing when we see lando seems to be trailbraking or something.

so no one ever noticed that the T cameras of the cars from the same team are different color ? Usually the number one driver gets the black one and the number two driver gets a yellow one, this has been a thing for years now ._.

The fact is, modern F1 cars with two pedals is a bit boring to watch compared with the days when there was a clutch, and non synchronized gearboxes, so drivers had to double clutch while downshifting, and better even do the old heel-and-toe action Italians reffer to as punta-taco! It sure was a whole lot more fun to watch the footwork action in the ooole days.

There is a driver facing camera that the FIA use for accident recording. Why are we not allowed to view these video's even when the driver is ok after a big crash? I remember Grosjean remarking that he had watched his crash from the 2020 Bahrain GP.

No, pedal camera is not a fan favourite. Actually before in the 90s it had some sort of sense, nowadays is quite boring (as before but take off one pedal). Now the driver's eyes camera or on-board cameras those are the ones
