How Formula 1 Wheel Guns Work & Why Not Cordless?

We're in Japan for the Formula 1 Grand Prix!
Our lifetime worth of TOOL RANKINGS are updated weekly: torquetestchannel.etsy.com/li...
Maxiflex gloves: amzn.to/3xGeVJ2 DeWALT Blower: amzn.to/4atA8ob
Today we're in Japan because we're in the pursuit of knowledge, not because there's a race and good food here to enjoy, that's coincidental. Why does F1 continue to use the Dino Paoli Hurricane 2 while lower formulas and Formula E have switched to cordless wheel guns? Today we take a look at a Formula 2 wheel gun and inside how an F1 wheel gun works to try and explain why some of those reasons might be and why it might go away some day.

To clarify, the cut away gun was not an F1 Hurricane 2, we've not had access to one yet nor 400psi on hand to push these tools to thier max. So any numbers from our side would be not very representative of the real gap, this episode was about learning how they work which we were very happy to be able to do.

I get to help with pitstops on GTP cars within imsa as part of my job, and I can say that, at least for teams that train the crews properly, there's not a huge amount of adrenaline on a normal pitstop. If you train good enough, the race stops feel just like the practice stops, and not really anything special. If there is adrenaline, it's only during a really close battle for the lead where a half second faster on the pitstop is going to help you.

I was about to get a cordless model but worried it wouldn't have the same RPM and power as a corded dremel. I ended up getting a corded knockoff for $30 that I hope will do the business. Interesting timing - just a few days ago a tried to search your channel to see if you ever reviewed any of the Dino Paoli impact tools. Would be really cool to see you do some tests on some of their regular impact wrenches like the DP 1800 plus. I have no reason to be interested in them aside from the fact they make the motorsport wheel guns used in the top race organizations, F1, nascar, indy. I wonder if that same quality and performance carries over into their more realistic/useable line of tools for regular mechanics, there is very very little info about them online though.

That's why my preferred choice for auto type work and wheels is a small pneumatic 1/2" impact gun that turns 11,500rpm, weighs a mere 1.3kg and is under 6" in width. It's like the 2T YZ125 of impact wrenches, only offered up an honest 350-400ft lbs, but boy does it do it FAST. On standby is the MAC tools nano that's on their latest catalogue aka the Facom Nano NS1600 & the Astro Nano 3/8 when I want to just slow things down & relax. Now my high torque fuel big phat heavy full size Milwaukee M18, meh its got beans & powa's but it's big, heavy, clunky, slow, unbalanced and just down right not enjoyable to use with one hand or even two. But...all the cool kids love them, I'm just not cool I suppose 😢

I think it depends on what you already have in your shop. If you have a 25 gallon (100 liter?) air compressor or larger, then yeah... air tools all the way. I have a tiny air compressor since I rarely need it, as much as I need to do typical bolt removal, hole drilling, etc. And for the home gamer, electric has an advantage of portability that air powered does not. I think it breaks down something like Pro/Semi-Pro users are gonna find air tools better. For the anything below that, electric is going to be good enough with a lower initial cost of entry. Just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth (essentially zero).

@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Yeah, impact stuff definitely isn't their strong side. This answers a question I've had for several years, they don't have a battery gun with enough speed and torque. As an OLD slot-car racer, I've rewound little DC motors, worked with armature reactance, and better brushes to achieve *much* more RPMs and torque than stock, which brings up the question of why aren't there custom electric wheel guns that can do this? My modified slot car motors used far more battery than a stock motor so I would expect that a custom wheel gun would too, and15,000 rpm is not that hard to achieve. So, whaddya think??

AWESOME!!! the wheel guns of F1 don't get alot of attention. Have a GREAT time at the race and enjoy it! I very much enjoyed the US Grand Prix at COTA in 2021. And the Japanese fans are awesome.

Eh, at this point even the Max fans want him to qualify P9 or something; this is just boring.

A nitrogen cylinder is cheap to lease or borrow (and cheap to buy used then exchange or have refilled, every gearhead should have one for purging HVAC etc or doing your own tires dirt cheap). Some nearby patron may loan them for a plug. A nearby welders supply would love the recognition. BTW soapy water sux compared to tire mounting compound which I wish I'd used decades ago. A tub it worth it for a DIYer and it doesn't promote corrosion. Soap isn't even close.

I would like to compare the F1, Indy car and NASCAR impact drivers. I’ve seen Indy pit stops where the impact driver is thrown to the wall after installing the tires.

Would love to see LIDL(Parkside) and ALDI(Ferrex) stuff tested, if you are reaching to the european market.

Einhell is for people who dont want to spend much and have something that works but its not good from my experience. Kinda like walking in home depot (I am assuming they have some tools) and buying something.

So would a hammer doing a full rotation, hitting the anvil on that trihammer design, deliver a harder impact than a triple that hits 3 times a rotation?
