Different cultures have different origins. They are fundamentally different. so the question is what is freedom? what is the standard of freedom? who defines the freedom? Chinese culture is totally different with different standards. All those concepts in China such as freedom, democracy and even communism are just perceived differently by Chinese people.

I once volunteered in the depressed area of Baltimore, there if you don't own a car, you have no freedom of movement whatsoever since there is barely any public transportation. The nearby wealthier towns have jobs, but you can't get there. And since you can't get there to make money, you can't afford a car. So these people are trapped in generational poverty. The cheap and prevalence of public transportation has indeed given Chinese people so much more freedom and upward mobility.

Since the Reform and Opening Up (改革开放) was introduced by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, and by the end of 2018, a total of 5.86 million Chinese students have left the country to study abroad. Out of these, 4.32 million had completed their studies, and more than 3.65 million have returned to China soon after completing their studies. In 2018 alone, around 662,100 Chinese students left China to pursue overseas studies. The number increased by about 11.8% compared to the previous year and makes China the largest country of origin for international students. Chinese tourists made 149 million overseas trips in 2018 with total spending amounting to $130 billion, according to a report released by the China Tourism Academy. This phenomenon - of Chinese citizens being allowed to travel abroad and returning - is undoubtedly a powerful indication that China (1) does not oppress its citizens’ pursuit of liberty, freedom, and happiness; and (2) is confident that its own socioeconomic and sociopolitical system are highly competitive; even if they are compared with those of the West, and to the extent that its citizens are expected to return.

Hi Barrett, no need to apologise for China, even though I am a Malaysian Chinese. The march to be a world superpower with safe and clean cities and environment will be part of the march of China into the 21st Century. All society is a continuum of time and progress. No country or society is static. At the beginning of 1949, China was everybody colonies but nobody's responsibility. It has come a long way and lifted some 700 million people out of poverty and soon to be the largest economy in 2030 and by 2050 will have an economy four times the size of the second largest i.e. USA. So do not fear or apologise for China for what she is. She will transform this Century to be the Asian Century which is in reality the East Asian Century.

On the topic of China, coming back to China has made me realize many things, even more things than last year, I know love China even more than before and they has never been a time to be more proud as a Chinese in modern history. China is not what it used to be, it is no longer a sick, ill country, but a glorious nation on the rise to become the most glorious in human history. Let's address the elephanto in the room, in western democratic states and other democratic states pretty much hate China, in Australia, you would never hear anything good about China, you would never hear anything praising or celebrating China and it's achievements. It's all just negativity upon negativity upon negativity. Worst of all, the media and government always use a uglifying and condescending tone whenever they report and/or speak about China, and to be honest, so much of it can be considered as fake or at least, misleading news. From the fake bullshit they do on Xinjiang and the Chinese governments "evil" actions in the area, or the support for the Hong Kong protestors retards who think smashing buildings and throwing molotovs and setting buildings and innocent people on fire will make them more "free", whatever the fuck that means. I'm in support for protest, as long as it's peaceful, by the way it looks now, the Hong Kong protestors have completely lost any shed of legitimacy they might have had a long time ago. Wow I wonder why the police "brutality" only happens when the protestors are becoming super violent and are setting buildings on fire. It's not as if the police are supposed to enforce and act upon the law and maintain social stability amiright 🙄🙄🙄🙄. There are so many people out there, who are so absolutely clueless about China and so childish, naive, foolish, ignorant, uneducated, and have their realities completely distorted, and they're all so fired up and vigilant to believe that they're so right, yet in reality they're actually so wrong. These people are so unknowledgeable on the topic and issue, it's very baffling and even shocking to see that so many people are so embarrassingly stupid and ignorant, it's so out of the world and almost comical, yet very sad at the same time. I absolutely love China. I have come to actually love it and its people even more than I did before. Everyone here are just living happy and prosperous ordinary lives, grow up, find love, get married, have kids, and repeat, no difference whatsoever to the lives of the "Western democracies" or other "democratic states". People wear nice clothes, drive fancy cars, live in fancy homes, have fancy furniture, eat fancy food, girls put on makeup, drip hypebeast stuff, go out shopping, have coffee, have a night out with the boys, or maybe a gaming sesh with the boys, old aunties and the elderly stroll along with full swag, people chill in parks, people sit around and play board games, people sit around and just chill with their mates, people sit around and gossip about all sorts of stuff whilst sipping on tea, people exercise in gyms, children play around joyfully with big smiles on their faces in playgrounds, restaurants open till midnight, street snacks for all the boys, great law enforcement, a very safe and productive society, etc. etc. etc… the list goes on. There are so many embarrassingly clueless and ignorant people out there who just refuse to take off their biased glasses, very sad indeed. I am honestly disgusted and just shocked at the fact in this day and age people still think of China as some sort of communist gulag state like North Korea. Like yeah it's you told me China was pretty shit in 1960, I'd completely agree with you, but if someone were to tell me China is still shit in 2020, they'd probably need to check their head. It's actually so insulting that people view China like this and become so anti-China or anti-Chinese government. When in reality, China is actually MORE free than other countries which are against it. For example, most obviously is the complete lack of universal health care and insurance in America, most of the time, when you contract or get a very serious illness, you either pay the money, or you die, so in a sense, restricting your freedoms so much that your right to live has been taken away. What about China then? Well there is universal health care coverage for all, young people (toddlers, children, teens) and the elderly as well as the disabled and people with special cases such as the one child policy generation families get special and better treatment. And at times a surgery that costs $20000, can be subsidized by the government to be just around $3000 This is not hypothetical, this is a real case with my grandma who had to have a life saving heart surgery. It is very depressing and almost funnily sad that being anti-China and anti-Chinese government has become politically correct and the norm which everyone should follow. I had my doubt about China as well, I used to hate the Chinese government so much and thought that Xi Jinping ate babies for breakfast or some shit. But then I studied, I learnt, I analyzed, and I researched, but mostly importantly, I came to China to see for myself. The elephanto in the room is that everyone think because China doesn't have One man one vote, it is then basically North Korea. Essentially no "democracy" = bad, people need to overcome this mental hurdle and barrier. I overcame it by studying about Singapore and how it went from a poverty striken swamp land to the most developed country on Earth, and especially about its leader, Lee Kuan Yew, and his philosophy and ways of doing things. China is not democratic, because democracy is fundamentally flawed, China is a meritocracy, which is the best political system and there are literally no downsides to it. It is basically where the best people are chosen for the job based on their merit, and their ability to do the job properly and well. Unlike modern democracy, where the best candidate to lead the country is based on how much people feel charmed by them or how well they appear on TV (Look at Ukraine lol they literally elected a comedian to be their president wtf). YES, China is not a PERFECT country, there are many issues, just like every other normal country, what people NEED to do is to take off their stupid biased glasses and understand that China is a normal country where ordinary people live happy, prosperous lives, and honestly most of time, a happier life than most its neighbours and other countries (just take at look at Korea, the country with the highest suicide rate in the world by far, or Japan, where the population is declining, compare with China where it's the happiest country in East Asia, has one of the lowest rates according to population and also booming in population). People need to also understand that the Chinese government is not one sort of 1984 big brother North Korean commie gulag government, but a normal government, with departments, ministries, regional governments, networks and so on... It is a government which sets its aim at making the Chinese people's lives better, and making China greater. Keep doing what you do and show the world the REAL China!!

It's just astonishing for me that when a lot of the westerner youtubers comment on China I think they are talking about maybe North Korea or something else. Why not just come to China for once to see if it's as terrible as they assume. Chinese people are just living their ordinary lives like any other people in the West. And in a lot of regions you will actually feel it’s more modernized and fashionable compared to most parts of the western countries that come to your mind.

Keep doing what you do and show the world the REAL China!!

im pretty free as a chinese citizen, well as long as i dont meddle around with some contraversial political affairs. For instance, minorities issue has complicated historic reasons. I dont think anyone without a proper history and sociology knowledge can make proper criticism about this issue. Last time we went easy with those extremist, they killed dozens and hundreds of innocent civillians in Xinjiang. U know, those "Tukistan" guys love to hang out with ISIS, Taliban and Al Qeada dudes. Ofc, there are still lots of negative side of the CPC government, such as corruptions, bureaucracy and bunch of old conservative, studdbern and tough dudes, just like Trump and those senators in US. But hey, US also has lots of shitty affairs (Refer to Snowden and WikiLeaks) and often tried to mess things up as well. I'd say all governments are quite similar in terms of this. Nothing special to me. BTW, We are not USSR or DPRK or Nazi Germany Reich if u still havent noticed yet. If we were llike USSR, i'd be in a labor camp already even before finishing typ No XD just kidding. I'm not getting into any trouble by saying these either, as long I dont behave like a CIA spy or making up the fake news.

“im pretty free as a chinese citizen, we’ll as long as i dont meddle around with some contraversial political affairs” LOL. Actually, I shouldn’t laugh. Because it’s really sad to see some people’s definition of freedom. I know this guy does feel free, and good for him. Perhaps he does not foresee the need to be involved in political activities such as voting. But not all Chinese people feel this way.

@@realguy6964 although chinese leaders got their job not by universal votes, they nevertheless have to pass through the internal CCP party members' votes. All the CCP party members come from the common people, in many way they are more righteous and dutiful citizens of chinese people, they represent the pillar of chinese society, so their votes speak volumes. By the way, China have nearly 92millions CCP members, which are much more than many countries' entire population! So, are these people's votes not validate to western world view? Why do western politicians turn blind eyes to this simple fact?

@@andrewzhang985 ... "All the CCP party members come from the common people". NOT true at all. "Some" party members, not all. "In many way they are more righteous and dutiful citizens of chinese people". LMAO! I don't like to use the word brainwashed, but i have no other word for you if you think there are some Chinese people that are better than other Chinese people just because of political association. Andrew Zhang ... I never suggested you were a party member. I just find it disgusting that you think Party members are more righteous than ordinary Chinese people. I have travelled myself. China by far has many problems . Christians in China experienced, among other things, an increase in attacks on churches in the past year. Open Doors reports that 793 churches were attacked within the reporting period for the 2018 World Watch List, compared with 1,847 attacks reported on churches worldwide in 2019. In 2020, the number is conservatively estimated to be at least 5,576 in China alone, the report states. According to Open Doors, there are at least 97 million Christians in China. Policies enacted by the Communist Party in 2018 to “sinicize” the church - or adapt it to their way of thinking - have been enforced in more and more territories, resulting in the dramatic increase of persecution against Christians, the group reports. People of faith also suffer from continual surveillance by the government. Open Doors cites a CNBC report that says there are nearly half a billion surveillance cameras in China, a number only expected to grow. Additionally, Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from attending church, places of worship are monitored, and pastors are increasingly being asked to register with the Communist government, risking church closure and arrest if they refuse, the report continues. More than 5,500 churches in China have been closed down, and churches in at least 23 provinces have been harassed or shuttered.
