Your motorcycle's performance has been intentionally restricted by the manufacturer! Guest host Mike Spurgin from ‪@TACOMOTOCO‬ introduces the mods you'll need to tune and calibrate your motorcycle's fuel system to unleash its true performance and potential. Fuel system modifications that tune or even reprogram your bike's performance maps can provide smoother power and better engine reliability by optimizing the air fuel mixture across the entire RPM range. The objective - a stoichiometric fuel and air mixture that burns all fuel with no excess air.

there is a surprising amount of power trapped in your adventure motorcycle your bike's potential has been intentionally restricted by the manufacturer fortunately using modern electronics we can easily transform the way your machine performs. welcome to MOTOTREK. my name is Mike Spurgin. your motorcycle is the result of the compromise and negotiations between three players in the production pipeline the Engineering department wanted to deliver a motorcycle that was amazing exciting fun race-ready. in Sales and Marketing they were after a motorcycle that was safe reliable something sensible had broad appeal and then the Regulatory Agency they needed to have a motorcycle delivered that was quiet and efficient. the indication is that someday they will give us 300 miles to the gallon. So we've got three cooks in the kitchen that are baking up a bland moto-casserole but luckily we don't have to settle on this mediocre performance we've got some magic black boxes that will boost the performance of any adventure motorcycle so to understand this new technology let's take a look back at the humble carburetor

I get the feeling that Mike could deep dive into a lot of this, but still managed to keep it quick and understandable for everyone. That's a very impressive skill to have. When I meet people in life like that I listen, as they are usually the masters of their craft. Well done.

Unfortunately Power Commander do not offer anything for the R1250 GSA, and currently have no plans to do so. Unfortunately here in the UK so many re-map places are a rip-off so am struggling to know how best to get my bike tuned for the full (de-cat) system and end can.

You mention at 4:22 that you can flash the ECU to accommodate the mods you've made to your intake or exhaust. I thought we were focusing on correcting the problem of bikes being underfueled by design, not correcting fueling after mods. Did you digress or is it supposed to be a given that you need to modify your intake / exhaust to get any gains from any of these solutions? Could you clarify for us novices?

You do NOT want to tune to Stoich for power or economy. Stoich is only for emissions reasons. If you want power, you tune rich (~12.5 or 13.5:1). If you want efficiency, you tune lean of peak (15.5+:1, as far as you can, before power drops off more than fuel consumption, all the way up to around 22:1, where the combustion starts to fail, entirely). Running THAT lean does NOT melt anything. In fact, the engine runs hottest at stoich, which is not good, at WOT.
@HPRaceDevelopment
@HPRaceDevelopment 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty accurate. except on these types of engines misfires occur around 16.5:1. To get 18:1-22:1 to run would require more induced inlet turbulence, better quench area (in trade for valve area) and smaller inlet tracts. Economy is a toss up - as we mostly want minimal RPM - as it's number one driver for mileage. So often making more power with more fuel rather than too lean - but at low rpm yields best economy

Is it possible that the factory mapping could develop a glitch on a NEW bike with only 1900 miles, and cause the engine to knock ? Could mapping cause knocking in any way?

Hmmm interesting video with more interesting comments, back in the 1997 EFI was introduced on the BMW R1100GS range, we had a brand new one in the workshop, and started bagging out the EFI issues it would have and how unreliable it would be.....well I bought a new R1100 GS in 1998, and had done 350,000km, it was common that the hall sensor on the timing plate would fail at 150,000km, and that's about it for EFI components that would fail, apart from a injector clean at 200,000km and replaced the throttle bodies as they had worn out...I did come across a rider with a R1150 GS that was running rough as he had fallen off the bike and moved the TPS with his boot, we could have reset the TPS if we had a volt meter. Now for Carburettors....diaphragms tear, floats become porous, jets clog up, but are easily fixed on the side of the track or in the middle of nowhere if you carry the odd small parts. New bikes you need a magic black box to adjust the mixture, old carbie you need jets or just a simple change in the needle position.

I have EFI on my 91 K75, Rob, and it's still going strong after 190,000 miles. Of course I had to change out the rubber bits in the fuel system. Hall sensor is still good. I've adjusted it to experiment with the timing. - Tim

Sure. These ECUs are capable to do that too, depending on the mapping. There is for example the possibility to change the mapping of the throttle body, resulting the butterfly valve to open just up to 50% while turning the throttle into full lock position.

At 8:53 did he say optimal AFR is 14.7? That’s lean and what they come from the factory these days. I bet he meant 13.2.

14.7 is what the stoichiometric say. In real life, not all the fuel is burn so that is why we need more. However, every engine has is own sweet spot because no engine burn fuel exactly the same way.
