We all know GameStop is the worst video game store, but it wasn't always that way. How did it go from the fun videogame store to hang out at to a miserable closet full of junk you wanted to avoid?

I haven't gone to GameStop in about 2 years due to switching to PC. The times I did go I always enjoyed talking to the cashier since my parents or brother didn't care about my games 😂 The pre-owned area was my shit since 12/13 year old me couldn't afford new copies.

I loved GameStop until 2010. From 2005-2010 I would go in there about once a month and raid their "buy 2 get 1 free" used rack. Then one day out of nowhere that rack was gone. When I asked about it the manager acted like I was crazy and that they had never had a "buy 2 get 1 free" rack. I never went back to that particular GameStop and have only shopped at any gamestop a few times since.

How easy would it have been for them to just acknowledge they had it and that it was no longer a thing? Instead they make you sound like you don’t know what you are talking about which is just insulting. Classic example of them just lying to people’s face for really no reason.

@@TheBrister you are right and wrong about Gamestop making money off their used games. While they try to make money off used games, it is a hit or miss if they will make money off used games. Their buy 2 get 1 free on used games promotions they have became a hassle some time ago because people like me bought a lot of used games on buy 2 get 1 free with the idea of taking back the used games I had to pay for so I could keep the free used game. The free used game is a grey area for Gamestop because it doesn't effect them one way or the other if people return or don't return the used games they had to pay for to get the free game. Gamestop has admitted themselves that they could easily be stranded by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo if they wanted to and put them out of business. They are really not much of anything anymore.

5:33- I know this is what drove myself and several of my friends away from GS. As an introvert, it's challenging enough for me to go to what might be a very small, very crowded store and ask for help from a salesperson. But then when they try to pressure me into making all these odd and unwanted offers (I'm buying a vintage Pokemon Pinball game; what about that screams "YES, I totally want to pre-order Halo: Nightfall?!?!") it just amplifies the pressure by a hundred. eBay and other places are way cheaper, and I can even resell my old games/equipment and get more than a few pennies for my trouble.

My old Gsmestop from back in college was a total joke. They sold McFarlane sports figures there and the manager and employees would always take the chases and rare figures for themselves and put everything else on the shelves. When someone would come in looking for those figures, the employees would lie and say that another customer came in and bought them. They would also open up all the boxes of HeroClix and take out the good figures and put crap ones inside and reseal the box to resell.

??? I've never experienced this with a GameStop store. It's always been (usually from behind the counter halfway across the store) "Hello, welcome to GameStop. Can I help you find anything?" And when I say no, they're like "Okay, if you have any questions feel free to ask." This has been, universally, my experience with GameStop and associated stores like EB Games and Babbage's.

Gamestop no longer cared about their reputation after forcing out or buying up almost all of their competitors, creating a virtual monopoly for used games that let them set the rules and carried them for quite a few years. They knew they were the only place left in a lot of towns for used games, or even games in general, and the attitude of corporate/store management quickly changed. Now things have changed with alternatives having appeared over the years, digital sales having made newer used games moot, and there's been a Renaissance of sorts with mom & pop used game stores coming back. All those years of treating customers like trash have come back to bite them in the backside and it is just delicious schadenfreude. It used to be you could expect 60-75% of retail for trade in's for hot games and 40-50% for a good number of other games, until they had no competition left and it quickly nosedived to sub 30% on average in my experience. The last time I was ever in a Gamestop was years ago, where I was offered only 25¢ trade in for a game they were selling for $49.99 used. Never went back to one since. If I wanted to be that badly low-balled, I'd just have a yard sale.

When it comes to the store employees, like much of retail, the company gets what they're willing to pay for. I've worked at places that purged all their knowledgeable associates and replaced them with lower-paid but completely ignorant staff, then were shocked when their sales plummeted. Sadly, it's not about getting the best employees, it's about getting the cheapest.

I talked on the phone with my local GameStop 2 weeks ago, I had made the decision to buy a pre owned ps3 and refurbished ps2 from their website. They barely answered their phone with them doing order online and curbside pick up. During this covid pandemic corporate apparently changed its policy about what forms of payment were accepted. Debit cards were not accepted in store nor apparently online I was told I should go get a GameStop gift card or pre-paid visa gift card since it acts as a credit card. Since GameStop had no cash in store at the time. That’s pretty much pathetic most people only have and use a debit card, and it’s accepted everywhere. Also now the warehouse is out of stop on refurbished ps2’s both the slim and fat. The GameStop website does plenty of flim flam moves but this is truly pathetic.

The nearest Game Stop to where I live is about an hour away. There is a local gaming shop that buy/sells used games do lowball for cash, but give decent deals for trade ins. Why is it worth it even though one could get more if they drove an hour? They treat every customer with respect and go out of their way to help in any way they can, even if they don't make a profit then and there. They know how valuable repeat customers are and know there might be a time down the road that same customer that didn't actually buy anything that visit and just wanted some advice, might come in and make them a huge profit at a later date that they wouldn't have had if they treated them badly. How much do they actually lose for talking to a customer that didn't buy anything? Nothing. How much do they make helping that customer? Tons.

Here in Norway they had so much to offer before, when i moved to a town that had Gamestop, some years back. First it was lot of good games ,and lot of dvds and boxes of all kinds . A lot i had not come across before, or not seen in many years and so on. That went to about 2012, then it was suddenly a lot of new faces in store, feeling something not right there, then stories started coming out . Then as streaming turning over, more and more dvds they could not sell elsewhere . Then the merch section came, most of the same store, just a 3 or 4 small shelfs of game, where it had been a dozen plus., It was shell of it self in the end, like a old comedian wanting one last round of applause before curtain falling dpwn for good.

The herding and the TV playing the ads at an insane volume are the number one reasons I stopped going to Gamestop about a decade ago, the last time I was in a Gamestop was when they had a clearance sale and they were selling all the Starlink ships and figures for $2 each and I went in there for that but that was two years ago I think and before that it had been about seven years since I was last in one because I don't like being led around and having ads blasted at me like I am a trained monkey. As it stands shopping at Wal-Mart is a better way to buy games as they let me come in, look around myself, and buy what I want without bugging me to buy other stuff and that is why I bought my PS4, Switch, and Xbox one there instead of at Gamestop. 20 Years ago I never would have believed that Wal-Mart could be a better place to buy games than Gamestop but here we are and until Gamestop fixes that they will continue to fail.

Reggie was friends with the original owners (Dick and Dan) and garnered a lot of good will from the company. He was a valuable contact inside Nintendo. The only reason he was placed on the board of directors was so he could get a payout when the company finally goes under. Golden parachute. No shade on Reggie. Near as I can tell he is an OK guy but the move was purely to line his pockets. Like when a store is going out of business and offers a 80% - 90% discount sale. You're not a bad person for buying a bunch of stuff on sale; its just a shame you couldn't do more to support that store "if you were able to" before it put up that sign that it was closing forever.

Having seen this train wreck and even being on board that train since before it got out of control, I gotta say, the downfall of Gamestop was 1) the acquisition of EBgames and 2) Adopting EBgames business practices. Software Ect was a family oriented company, Gamestop was a customer service driven game company before EBgames. After EBgames "WHEN THE COMPANY WENT PUBLIC" it became TOTALLY profits driven. All that mattered was the stock prices and stockholder payouts. It was terrible to watch but in the end, the monster had to die. R.I.P. Gamestop.

Also I’m really lucky I’ve only worked with a few bad employees the ones who stick around are fantastic people and great associates :edit: and we’re all very knowledgeable, I once was told I was just some girl who took a job opening and don’t know anything because I hadnt played the new siv game yet, I’ve worked that for years and know more about the games in the store then that guy would have ever known, the way women at gamestop get treated by some customers is pretty bad. How did GameStop get to where they are for me? IMO selling used games, systems at or near new prices. Disrespecting customers wanting to buy new. Buying products for dirt cheap then selling at almost full price. Constantly trying to buy phones, ageism. This just makes me upset. GameStop should have respected the market. Kept certain programs that worked and built up customer relations instead of thinking of them as numbers. You make money by bringing customers back not alienating them.

The only reason why I shop at Gamestop is for cheap used games and maybe a figure. But I do avoid going to certain stores because of the associates can be pushy. I understand why they are so I'm not rude to the associate, I just won't go there or leave.

I used to really love GameStop. But now, ever since I learned all their shitty business practices, and the fact that most recently they stayed open during the pandemic and tried to convince people they were essential business......yeah, I’m done with GameStop. I don’t feel like shopping there anymore. They used to be THE place to get your games from. Now? They’re just A place to get your games from. I’d rather shop at Meijer, Target, and especially Best Buy for video games rather than them at the moment. I’m gonna continue boycotting them. Until they change how they run their business and stop treating their employees and customers unfairly, I will no longer shop there.

They just suck! I remember I bought madden 09 for $20. Went in to return it the very next day because I hated it and they gave me $2 for it . That is what started my hatred of them. The final straw was i bought Nascar heat 4 from gamestop.com, pre-ordered the gold edition. Not only did I not get it delivered launch day or the next week, it never got delivered at all. I tried calling gamestop.com numerous times could never get a hold of anyone, emails never got replied to. At that point I was done with game stop. Never again will they get my money.

My Friend used to work at Gamestop from 2003-2008 on Discord to everyone. He told me that they suck just as badly as they do now. He told me that the store would try to force people to pre-orders for Bad Boys: The Video Game and got yelled at because they didn't sell enough pre-orders for the game. Gamestop thought the game would a huge seller despite the game came out after the movie was out.

I stopped buying physical copies of games.. trade ins were always pennies to the dollar for what I paid for them, so trading in was almost pointless, and I kinda got spoiled this gen by booting games from the hard drive :P I never thought it'd happen but I kinda started hating swapping discs. Also I swore off preordering once I got burned by Street Fighter 5, with the rare exception, so GS just stopped making sense.

I stopped going there when they stopped paying fair prices for trade ins. And i'm not talking about cash, but when even while paying for the pro card for more of a trade in value i would get $15 max for games that weren't even 2 months old.

The bombardment you describe has been going on since at least 2008. That's when I noticed the staff starting to get really pushy and badgered customers like myself to the point where we didn't want to go in anymore. I'm guessing the district manager was being quite proactive in implementing corporate policies to the letter. GeStapo has been cultivating this reputation for quite awhile, slowly pissing off more and more people. So when we can get better prices online without being hassled every 10 seconds, it's no surprise that customers just started saying "fuck this."

The odd thing is that I will probably miss them if they go as they represent a part of gaming culture that we will probably never see again. In my area, there are other video game stores (either independently owned or smaller chains) that pop up, usually try to focus on retrogaming and never last more than a year or so. To me this paints an unfortunate picture that the Gamestop model is the only viable way to run a video game store in this day and age and even they're struggling.
