Fantastic interview. Salam was asking brilliant questions and obviously did his homework on this subject and Epstein was very clear with explanations. Maybe I'm bias because I'm an athlete but I think this is the best interview I've seen on Vice. Thank you for your work Epstein, you've convinced me to purchase your book.

Hey, just wanted to point out a few relevant / interesting connections with swimming in particular. First off, many major meets (USA/EU all star meet Duel in the Pool for one) are starting to include a mixed relay - 2 men, 2 women, any one in any place. Second, David mentions he thinks women could consistently outperform men in distance swimming given a long enough race. While I don't think I believe that (arm length counts for a LOT in distance swimming), I do see women outperform men all the time in everyday practices. (NCAA, PAC) They tend to have a more flat performance curve between high-volume season and taper for the end of the season, whereas men really slow down under pressure, but can completely outpace the women at the taper meets.

Soccer is mind and how it connects with body, basketball is more aggression requirement. It shouldn't be taboo, but we should definitely reconsider athletic competition and if it makes sense short term, because activities do effect adjustments in a gene pool, SLOWLY, it has been known through evolution and adaption. Just to say it's gene is definitely a part of it, but ...only intelligent people would know how to take that next step of adaption and evolution.

Look at Kurt Cobain his whole family was musical his great aunt was in the "Annie" musical and his grandfather was a musician in the classic "king of jazz". His aunt Mary put out folk albums. He was genetically diverse also German, Irish & French so i guess it helped create this freak of nature Beethoven/mozart type figure that comes along every 100 years or so... It was also probably his downfall.

Minor correction with the first point in the video. It wouldn't be lightness that would be prized, it would be the wideness of the person's frame. Being a 5'2 man wouldn't be a huge advantage, really that being a 6'2 man with the weight of a 5'2 man would be an advantage. So any one person, GIVEN their frame would do better at a lighter body weight (unless their epidermis has some flying squirrel jeans), not simply lighter people without all the bayesian stuff. Much more technically, the ratio of the frontal surface area of the person's body to the mass of their body. Momentum is proportional to mass, while drag through the air roughly in proportion to the square of the velocity (not quite squared, we know the exponent is slightly less than 2, but its not concise number) Both sexes could exhibit this trait ^ source: bored statistician, who decided to torturously change career paths in order to be 'that guy' in other fields, always denying patterns

Vice, you're fucking awesome for arranging this topic to be discussed. IMO, the tabooness of human diversity and genetics, which is essentially a fear of facing the science at a mythological expense of multiculturalism, engenders anti-social and harmful "bacteria" to grow among people. It allows for false underflying opinions about differences between humans to be developed. There are many imbeciles who would say based off of seeing the NBA populated by Blacks, would overderive a faulty race theory from it.

maybe also linemen in american football, a decent center in basketball ya got the arm length and some speed and some endurance?, volleyball maybe?, soccer goal keeper if ya can lose just enough weight and gain some moderate quickness. There a bunch of stuff that requires large men and and still a bunch for large heavier men. Depends on your strength and speed though :( if it helps I'm only 6' coming out of a family that's literally all under 5'9", I'm very slow to gain weight or strength, I'm to light and have to high a center of gravity with my a weirdly wide chest to not get knocked over easily. I always wanted to be a American football tight end and basketball shooting guard but im too small and weak to really outmatch alot of starting physical freaks or muscle my way in. sometimes we have to accept that we can never physically be a Kobe or Gronkowski and that even sometimes the best our genes provide and hard work are child's play to the elite. Be proud of what you do have :) Coming from the guy who thought he could be an all state selection tight end despite basing undersized af just because he had long arms and could catch lol. just look at the horizon, chances are you arnt a genetic dud, otherwise you'd wouldn't live past the last stages of pregnancy :)

There are lots av Blacks VS Whites comments and this is my take on it: I would say athletes pick they sport based on culture and their social status. Black people tend to choose cheap/outdoor sports such as track and field, basketball, soccer, boxing, running, football... where their physical proportions and muscle fibers suit them well...these sports are kinda cheap and has a low social status. Whites choose indoor/expensive sports: hockey, tennis, golf, swimming, horse riding, cycling, motorsports and so on... which has a high social status, at least where I live (Sweden)...and of course there are exceptions. I've alway had this theory about strongmen that it's and old culture and tradition that has always existed, especially among northern Europeans where you compete a lot. Strength was always needed in colder environments and to eat food containing lots of fats, carbs and protein to survive cold and harsh winters and hunting. This characteristics develops and passes on to next generations to come. This is just a theory of mine. What do you think?

Your theory is not exactly correct. In America the "white affluent" sports where illegal for blacks to be a part off. So of course this created a gravity towards so called "black sports" Swimming was heavily stigmatized for black people to take part of. Golf also barred black people from joining. But historical the majority of Horse jockeys in American history were black only until racial laws changed and forced many black people away from the sport. Hocky was originally played by slaves in Canada but of course time changes. So there is a bit of history to keep in mind of the theory

The thing is people get the luck to be born slow or fast running. This is because 1-Your not in shape 2-Your percentage of fast twitch muscle is lower than the slow Tich muscle. But if I start training I can increase the percentage of fast twitch muscle to s higher percentage. Like I could go from 30% to 70-80%. The thing is that you can be successful not being talented or being born with the genes is just that is gonna be harder to be successful if you have been born to run long dist. but if you want to do the sprints but you have been built for long dist then is going to be harder for you to become a sprinter, but it doesn't mean you can't become elite.

but race doesn't exist... we're all the same. We're all part of the human race. Even though we can categorize peoples by groups distinguishable with specific traits/ bone density, genetic disposition to certain diseases or disorders, metabolic rates, fat placement, organ size, skin color- it doesn't matter- these differences could be called 'race' but that would be 'racist.' Race doesn't exist. We're all the same. Except when we're not. But any perceived differences stop at the neck. Except with the hair and skin color which continues to the top of the head.

Different genes result in different abilities. An East African can't sprint or dunk like a West African and a West African can't long-distance run like a East African. More upper body arm strength is higher in Europeans actually than Africans, but Africans probably have greater leg strength that can make-up for it in sports.

Johnathan Strongarm Exactly, this lunatic argue that us black folks are 'superior' athletes, yet if you look beyond the few sports in which black people participate in (Baseball, Basketball, American Football, Boxing and Track), that argument falls apart. It's unfair to associate success of black people in sport with 'genetic superiority', because it's takes away from the hard work, and dedication.

Brandon Mial Blacks tend to have different proportions to whites. Smaller torso longer limbs. Anything which involves maximal speed or jumping will invariably suit black athletes. Anything which involves maximal power or throwing will suit white athletes. There are always exceptions but the idea that blacks would dominate any sport they were interested in just shows how retarded the debate has gotten with this issue. Different populations produce different attributes. The fact that American TV has an almost sycophantic obsession with sports which physiologically suit black athletes has lead to ridiculous myths passing as fact. PEDs have also made genetic traits more exaggerated. Notice how there are barely any black heavyweight boxers these days? That is because whites tend to be larger and hit harder (shorter limbs bigger torsos = more torque) and have larger lungs (=greater stamina) and since the Europeans PED-game caught up with America you get massive caucasians dominating the sport, similarly in the UFC there has not been a black heavyweight champ yet (I don't think...). .Similarly there have been very few white sprinters for decades (Lemaitre a notable exception). Also studies have shown blacks have lower pain thresholds than whites which would help to explain why none of the NFL rejects ever go to europe and play rugby (although stamina is also an issue here too). When you add in the fact that blacks reach physical maturity before any other racial group it shows that the school/collegiate athletes are not playing on a level field so to speak Differences are what makes sport so interesting. Pound for pound the east asians are stronger than everybody else, they just tend to lack height. Hope that helps.

BULL SHIT never limit yourself, the genes are determined by the thought how do you think genes are manipulated to begin with? The organism has a thought and begins to act on it by using the environment and the body tags right along and makes changes. Nature likes to accommodate our imagination.

Wow... First of all, evolution doesn't happen by will. Second, human beings don't evolve in that way (improvement of physical attributes) any more because we aren't in the food chain. We still evolve! Just not like that. Plus, what you're suggesting is exactly the same thing as "wish with all your might and you will change your DNA".

That's exactly what Im saying, you see the psyche also plays a big role in evolution very very big role. Evolution does happen by will, we are just not aware of what we actually have control of. People still think emotions is some magical stuff and that sexual preference is not a choice. We are still in the food chain the predator has just become more sophisticated and has taken the form of bacteria and viruses and they also play a big role in our evolution. I suggest you look up bruce lipton he has a presentation named as above so below. Back to what I was saying, the body does what ever it can to survive and that is by changing due to the environment physically but don't leave out the mental part, you see if your mind isn't in tact with present environment you are in, you will not survive at all despite all your physical capabilities. When I say you wont survive I just don't mean death but mental imbalances as well. If you begin to think everyday not that I wish I was a fast runner but Im going to turn myself into a fast runner, a series of events happen in the brain where literally hormonal changes begin to happen. The body is the second brain and it does what ever it can to stay in alliance with the head brain so that you can survive. How do you think butterflies have these beautiful designs on their back that sometimes look like their very own predators or perhaps it looks like a tree itself? They go and they sit on a tree hiding from the predator, the body begins to pick up the signals and in alliance to the brain it literally makes the butterfly camouflage with the wood or sometimes even look like the predator. It doesn't take much knowledge in the sciences to see this even though i do spend alot of time studying biology but you can clearly see it in nature. You must not be aware of the diversity of the animal kingdom? Animals such as leaf bug and such marvelous creatures like it

"People still think sexual preference is not a choice" FIRST POINT. The science disagrees with you. Homophobe. "mind isn't in tact with present environment you are in, you will not survive" mental illness is pervasive across generations. Maybe you meant to say something new-age baseless bullshit again, in which case - just stop. "a series of events happen in the brain where literally hormonal changes begin to happen" Everyone knows this. This happens to everyone. Didn't you watch this clip to the end? He even said "(para)you have to be motivated. But anyone can be motivated, to win the olympics you need genetics" Again, science disagrees with your hippy crap. "The body is the second brain" This just made me laugh. "They go and they sit on a tree hiding from the predator, the body begins to pick up the signals" not even close. The ones that are slightly more brown don't get eaten. Therefore every new generation is slightly more brown. Rinse and repeat. "i do spend alot of time studying biology" now that's a lie, you just showed your ignorance on basic evolution.

Im not a homophobe Im actually one of the very few males who discards the idea masculinity and still be a heterosexual. Just look at my youtube picture do I look like the typical male who is homophobic \ I look pretty much like a sissy bitch, to the average man. Im also not with that new age "bullshit" I personally don't like but I don't like to say bad things about what others believe in. I do see that sooner or later some sort of religion will form out of it bring forth another 1000 years of hell on earth. If you really were about your sciences you would know that science is not stable thing and constantly changes, therefor what you said about science proving sexual attraction is not a choice is actually part of mainstream sciences, First an scientific Idea is shown and it is taken to a place where various scientists evaluate it, you can call this the congress of science and then they take it to their "court" and then they allow it to be stated as fact. But like any big business it is corrupted. Scientific organization owned by those in hollywood and those in hollywood owned by oil companies, certain scientific studies must be presented in such ways to go in favor with an agenda. NO not conspiracies what I am talking about is solid marketing and money $$$. Yet there are studies that show that sexual attraction is a choice but then there are solid studies by biologists, psychologists, and so forth that the we have a great amount of control of our brain . Think Im bullshiting? explain why there are 30,000 scientist going against global warming and 9,000 of them have Ph.D's? perfect example of how marketing has taken over the sincerity of the scientific community, it all has to be in favor with what is culturally popular. No but wait there is alot of solid proof of global warming, we've read books on it, videos, makes perfect sense ... About the body being the second brain that more of a figurative form of speech but you couldn't pick up on that because you're so wrapped up on how what your about to read is so wrong and stupid. Lets do this though I don't respond back to you, and ill keep on with my little stupid belief that we do have control of the changes in our body and and you go ahead keep your science backed up belief that the body does things that we have no control over. At the end of the day nobody is hurt and thats what matters. And next time don't be so mean because sometimes words can really hurt someone. Not me but it can for someone else. So watch it Iwould say

Why is nature vs nurture even a topic? You obviously have to work to get where you want.

Bryan Gomez Because if hard work was really all that mattered than success would be a given, he addresses this in the book, its just a fairy tale we tell our kids so they don't feel like shit. In elite sports you need nature + nurture to make it to the top, and the more popular the sport is the more it becomes true. I've played tons of different sports my whole life, and the hardest working guy is rarely the best. Its usually someone who is very naturally gifted and trains a little bit.

I see, so when white people discuss eugenics in terms of preservation of their most favored qualities its taboo, but when people discuss eugenics within the framework of multiculturalism and race mixing it's A OK. I get it.

Racism is a meaningless term when used by liberal fuckwits like yourself to describe anything from White males to scientific research into biological variation between populations. Your misconception is noted, though.

Auto Didact i think for most people it’s of little concern what “white people” discuss. It’s when “white people” infringe on other peoples rights. Thats when there becomes an issue. Stay in yo lane.
