I never thought I'd see the day where Steven Gerrard of all people would become underrated. Anyone who was watching football during his prime saw year in year out that he was the best midfielder if not the best player in the Premier League. He is maybe the most complete player of all time. You could put him up front or at center back in his prime and he'd still probably be one of the best players in the league. He didn't win the PL but listen. Neither did Rio at Leeds. Or Carrick at Spurs. Or Lampard at West Ham. Or Mane at Southampton. I could co on and on. My point is sometimes players who are more than capable of playing for a title winning team move on and do just that. Liverpool were never good enough to win a title when Gerrard was there. United and Arsenal at first, then Chelsea and later Man City simply had way more quality in their teams than Liverpool had. If he had signed for Milan who Ancelotti said tried to sign him twice, or Madrid, where Zidane said he personally told Florentino Perez to make him a Galactico on two occasions, or for Mourinho who said he tried to sign him three times during his Chelsea and Madrid days, or even United when Fergie tried to sign him. He would have a trophy cabinet stacked to the brim. But he turned all that down to stay with the club he loves.

@@TheSamiswellcool You’re on drugs. You know how many midfielders in the Premier League won player of the year? Loads pal. Not Scholes though. I guess he’s one of those rare flukes who was better than everyone but never recognised for it once in a twenty year career 🤷‍♂️
@TheSamiswellcool
@TheSamiswellcool 2 жыл бұрын
@@SonnyK248 ofc. Just because he never won it doesn't mean he wasn't the best ever. He just wasn't recognised due to lack of goals and assists. He would have got into any team in the world. Including the Barcelona that dominated everyone with the likes of iniesta and xavi. Gerrard Couldn't even manage a league title with the class teams he had around him nor did he win a Player of the year 😂 so don't see how that's relevant. Scholes was the best midfielder in the prem.

One of my favourite midfielders in my lifetime and one of the greatest captains I've ever seen. Stevie G was a colossus and RELIABLE even throughout the banter period for Liverpool. 17:30 did they? I checked the clip, and apparently, the defender who lost the ball to Gerrard, and didn't even chase him (which made it look like they let him score on purpose) had actually pulled a hamstring right at that moment. He was subbed off the very next minute.

Bro ok Gerrard was a great leader but how can you be the greatest leader ever with almost no winning in your resume except the most lucky comeback in UCL (Milan really deserved to win this title) ? I know it is a team sport and he had mediocre teams for many seasons but still in some of them he had great enough teams to win big or at least have Liverpool close to the top for consecutive seasons but that did not happen.

10:40 idk what you're talking about man, the ball from Gerrard was great but Cisse hitting that volley with the ball coming at him from behind and to strike it so accurately and keep it low and away was incredible. Neither player would have done well on that play without the other but Cisse's strike was very athletic. Also Gerrards first goal volley was more impressive than his second, as far as difficulty to strike. The second got through because of traffic blocking the goaltenders vision.

How did Rafa not have the best reputation? He'd toppled the Madrid Barca stronghold in La Liga winning b2b league titles and won a UEFA cup with a Valencia team worth a pittance🤦him and Mourinho were the hottest properties in football management at the time. Stoke's defenders do appear to back off generously particularly Shawcross, but it's as if they backed off once they felt Gerrard's acceleration was too much for them, plus Begovic had come off his line too to cover. Probably general confusion over what everyone's responsibilities were in the situation. Muniesa, who was closest to marking Gerrard 100% did his hamstring (he was subbed off instantly after the goal)

Oh, you don't know? Just check out highlights from that one match where he scored 4 goals against Norwich, 3 of which were all Puskas Awards material! He is probably the closest I've come to see a one man army like Maradona, during that crazy 13/14 season. There's also his "assist" for Dirk Kuyt against Manchester United (Kuyt should have just let the ball go in), or the goal where he took a 30 yard ball with his shoulder, then bypassed the goalkeeper. Or his curled header from the edge of the box against West Bromwich. 13/14 Suarez is the best player I've seen "live", ahead of CR7 and Messi.

They were so good that two of them would've almost won Ballon D'or. And hadn't Scholes been kicked out from that England squad, they would have formed the best trio that had been comparable to Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets. Just, picture this, Scholes was a great deep lying playmaker like Busquets despite of his rash tendency to do a yellow-card tackle, Lampard was similar to Xavi, a great creative playmaker whose purpose was to master the ball tempo, and there was Gerrard, akin to Iniesta, who played his skipper role perfectly and, by that time, was the most complete player of all-times.

Anyone would look good in those Liverpool teams, he never looked good for England. And owen won Liverpool more trophies. I believe he held Liverpool back as when he became all powerful he didnt want anyone there better then him. The way he conducted himself at England was terrible as well not speaking to other players, but i definitely put him ahead of Lampard, Scholes and Gerrard would of scored easily if not more as him if they played that role but they both wanted to be involved in the game more,where Lampard was pretty much a striker and never controlled the tempo and get the players ticking the way Scholes did or inspire and tackle like Gerrard did. That slip he done was unforgivable as i know he wouldn't of forgiven another player. Was a great player but never became a world class like Keame, Viera and Scholes as he never dictated the tempo or controlled the games but just had great moments in games. All his managers thought this as well and why they kept moving him around, deep midfielder, box to box, left winger, number 10 because if he didn't have those great moments his contribution wasnt much a bit better then Lampard but never complete. If England keot Hoddle as manager he would of played Gerrard with Scholes who hoddle akways said was first name on the sheet. He would get a 6 1/2 out of ten from me and im a expert on this and my analysis is final and to be tsken as gospel.

Gerrard is NOT considered the best out of himself Lampard & Scholes. Scholes is undoubtedly the best of the three, the way he was able to adapt his game throughout his career while remaining one of the best midfielders in the world was incredible. Neither Lampard nor Gerrard could do that, which is one of the reasons their careers took a shape downward turn once they hit their early 30s.

what are you on about Gerrard played Dm to start with became a box to Box then an attacking Mid /second striker and then went back to being a box to box player. He literally played every position at some point excluding keeper, You can think Scholes is better, thats your choice but dont just pretend Gerrard did not adapt, that's bullshit. Now its accurate regarding Lampard. But all 3 players were effective top class players throughout their ENTIRE careers

and as for Scholes, he had a better touch , and a better through balls (but not by much) than Gerrard, and in literally every other metric, Gerrard was miles better, Scholes was a better pureist play maker, but in every other midfieled Role Gerrard was better , and was almost as effective as ply maker. Lampard was the est scorer of the 3, Scholes was the best playmaker, and Gerrard was by far the most complete

@@jacksmith4460 Yeah, that was a weird claim. Gerrard was one of the most adaptable midfielders you'll ever see, and excelled in so many positions, so many roles. As well as the many positions and roles you already listed, he also had a whole season under Rafa on the right wing - and scored 20+ goals from there. And in his last few seasons he morphed into a sort of 'quarterback' - playing in front of the defence as a deep-lying playmaker (a little like the Pirlo role). Liverpool almost won the league with Gerrard playing that role (and again he was able to score, despite the change to his position - he finished his career as a deep-lying playmaker, but scored 10, 14 and 13 goals while doing it). And if anything, Gerrard's adaptability hindered his international career. He played plenty of games, but his willingness and ability to play multiple positions so as to accommodate others meant he very rarely played in the more attacking roles he excelled in during his Liverpool peak. Scholes was a great but to undermine Gerrard cos 'Scholes was adaptable and Gerrard wasn't' is just a fantasy.

Brendon Rodgers should have been sacked after that 6-1 defeat not bcos of only the score, that season was souless season every i saw, he benched Gerrard to sit on bench against Real Madrid in CL, he bought shitload of midfielders, Balletoli, Lambert for suarez money and he was sacked after 8 games next season & Klopp entered. Henderson, Milner did well, but Klopp Liverpool needs a Midfielder like Gerrard as well as captian.

Scholesy was unique and was at the heart of United's dominance. Gary Neville said he was the man that made everything tick with controlling games and huge reason why United were so dominant in the prem.
