I've always wondered how tech interviews became so difficult. This is the story behind it.

I had to build a project for an interviu. It took me around 25 hours or 5 days to complete it. I enjoyed it more than the regular interview, but that's only because I got the job in the end. If I had wasted 25 hours and not been offered a job, I would have been really pissed off about it.

Not sure if you can compare those acceptance rates. Typically you only get one shot at Harvard undergrad whereas people apply to Google every 6 months for life. It’s just misleading.
@infinitekaister
@infinitekaister 11 ай бұрын
It still doesn't change the fact that the statistic is much lower than the chances of getting into Harvard. Even if you account for something like what you stated, it's highly unlikely that the chances will dramatically match or change.

I'm a South Korean, and I remember that when we've got a much better search engine called Naver(still it is the best in our country though) around 2000 ~ 2010. These days we only use Naver for searching for some local restaurants, and most of some serious stuffs are searched through Google. I've heard there were even no such "Coding tests" around 2015... It is kinda amazing to observe how quickly and dynamically the IT industry changes...

@@user-sf9gs2pg1b Yes I remember that was early or mid in 2000. Although Google might have had much better results for searches done in English, Korean one was poor as long as I remember. Now? I even use Google when I want information in Korean haha

I doubt that (Naver > Google) as someone who lived in Korea for over 2.5 years. Generally, the quality of SW (especially regarding UI/UX, localization, caching, diacritics, encoding, and phone numbers) in Korea is quite bad. Few examples: Never map not changing the title of the page (bye bye history) and unrolling the search bar after opening a page (how can I see the name/pictures) and the mobile app just not opening without internet connection Kakaotalk not removing diacritics when searching for contacts (on Android, Windows and iPhone implements that correctly) and sending messages multiple times or reordering them (including images) Careertalk not allowing spaces in names and not knowing how to properly validate phone numbers of countries where the length is different from Korea (apparently no one ever tested that) EG Simcard having everything wrong Woori bank having separate app for English, not remembering my login id, not allowing passwords to be longer than 15 characters (?!?!?) and not allowing certain characters in the password PUBG - game getting stuck on loading screen on alt-tab, game getting stuck when rewinding a replay, random characters appearing on the map, game crashing when inspecting a crate in a replay while someone loots it, players teleporting 100m, vehicles getting stuck in terrain... Asiana Airline - email not containing the boarding pass, only a link to it... which did not work I could go on...

It reminds much of my journey during my past 4 years. I do not agree about they using this process to get the smart young talent. I did crack the coding interview for a big tech in my late 30s. I just took all my efforts because I do not see any bias in this process. I am not only older, but I had no previous work experience as SDE, CS degree, bootcamp,

I don't think big tech companies will completely shift to take home assignment style interview as they get lot of applications for single position so they have to filter out some of the applicants with leetcode style interviews. They can filter 1-2% with easy or medium leetcode questions and give them take home assignment to assess their quality of code.

You can earn as much or more than software "engineers" by learning a trade.

no trade (unless you own a business) will make as much as a principle software engineer (700k-1mil+). I know plenty of people in the trades and I know only one person, an electrician, who (barely) makes over 300k a year.

@@Saitanen Basically they are saying that the old approach didn't filter out enough candidates and the new algo-based questions provide a filter to evaluate only top-level candidates. The problem is I've seen cases where these leetcode monkeys have no idea how to contribute to a production environment.

I can't immgine being a noob again. I just can't. It's been 10 years, I just don't relate. So I went to leetcode to see what all the hype was about. Went to fizz buzz, a classic. OH SWEET JEZUS, the answers there are so bad. I just don't get it. Is this a meme? Or is this the real level? People praising other people, as far as I could tell, non-ironically, for avoiding modulo operations ... because ... writing to memory is faster than an arithmetic operation? Look, I'm no optimizing genious. I don't know if, these days, 3 if statements on the same "i" gets translated to a switch by the compiler, and if it will benefit from branch prediction. I just honestly do not know. Okay, division is more costly than addition or equals check. Sure. But it's a unsigned division at that. There's not much you could that's faster than a modulo. You can't do an equals without also incrementing something else. I doubt you could make an argument that both equals and increment is faster than a single div. You're not being interviewed for an assembly position. No one cares if you figure out a way to write machine code that's neglijably faster than a div. You're being interviewed to see if you can write code that doesn't look like an insane person wrote it. My dudes. Just have a map. Add "divided by" as key, and "response" as value: map.put(3, "Fizz"); map.put(5, "Buzz"). Have an empty string at each for loop start. If "i" is divizible by any key, add value to string. if string is empty, print "i", else print string. Done. Easy, maintainable, fast enough. If they ask you how you'd edit your code to include "Bazz" at divided by 7, just add that to the map. Boom. Done. I have gained so much job security by just going to leetcode. I get why I keep getting offers even when I'm not looking for a job. The juniors are terribad.

Google would be more equitable if they admitted that they don't know how to evaluate talent and just used a lottery once they've done the basic vetting stuff. They'd also have better engineers too because they wouldn't be tainted so heavily by the biases of the current talent. Of course they would also need to revamp performance reviews as well and... Well, we all know Google is too lazy to do anything real that improves diversity and inclusion. They have Asians for "diversity," and excuses for the rest. Enjoy the next failed Google project! 👍🏾

Honestly these questions are pretty easy, especially for those that programmed for a long time. For example, I coded for 9 years when I was in high school, and I qualified for USACO platinum, and honestly these interview questions were just easy versions of Platinum questions. It's just hard for those that think that with a CS degree it's fine and haven't coded until they are in college.

Competitive programming is not the same as production programming. I would expect someone doing competitive programming or A&DS style abstract questions for many years to find leetcode easy enough. But these interviews are targeted at a different kind of candidate, which seems a contradiction.
