@speedshifter101 Yeah, all makes can have that problem. However, the hemi engine is more likely than not to have the lifters fail. It's a poor design that Dodge is well aware of and refuses to fix......thats why the hemi engine is being canceled.

Good to see you making some gas truck videos! Also Good for folks to see the 6.4 (or any HD gas engine) is a very capable/cost effective alternative to the diesel. I have a similar Bighorn, a few less features, and about 200lbs more payload. It can't pull as much or as fast as the diesel, but for folks like me, it does just fine. I live in a hilly area with an 8k# camper. I get up & down grades no problem. 3.73 rear, 8-9mpg towing, 15 unloaded.

I have that same truck and tow a 9000lb Grand Design 315RLTS...hardly even notice the trailer is even there because it drives and handles so well! No doubt the 2994lbs of cargo capacity help! You're spot-on with all you mentioned about it for towing. I added an air suspension kit just to provide additional support (didn't actually NEED them). The only real drawback to mention for those still trying to decide what tow vehicle to buy is that with the gasoline engine you have to be much more careful about refueling due to some gas stations' islands not having enough clearance to safely tow through the fuel islands. Since the Ram is not a diesel, the truck lanes are not an option for ease-of-access to refuel. Still, we select routes that have Pilot or Flying J stations with RV lanes whenever possible, at best...always go to the outside fuel islands at worst. On a good day with lots of flats and a tailwind, we can get between 9-10mpg, but the average is between 8-8.5mpg. Great video -- keep up the great work, JB!

Well JB, I think I have to say that this video helped settle one thing for me. I’ve got to get me a Ram 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi. I want a truck that has better payload and towing capabilities than my ‘18 F150 with the 2.7 Ecoboost. But I don’t have any need for a 1 ton and I do not need a diesel. The DEF problems that I have been seeing and just the maintenance costs as well as the up charge for diesel helped me to decide I don’t need one. Me and my wife is looking at getting a 5er at some point that has a dry unloaded weight of like 9,300 pounds. I’m sure a truck like this would do just fine to tow it every now and then. As well as make a decent daily driver to put to work every so often. I’m also trying to decide it I want the new F250 with the 7.3 V8 gas engine.

There will always be a need for a diesel in pickups as they are now defined. A 350/3500 dually with a 30k towing capacity will need a diesel or the MDT trucks such as the 450/550/ 4500/5500 trucks.

I used to think Diesel was the only way to go when towing my 14k fiver. Bought a used low mileage Ram 3500 4x with 4:10 rear. 31,000 mile, 8' bed Tradesman. $37,000 out the door. Tows great. Not like my Cummins but much higher Payload. Gas prices lower, maintenance cost lower, no DEF, no EGR, no DPF, no Turbo. Another issue with Diesel ; you pick up bad fuel which is common with Diesel, all repairs are on you, no warranty coverage. If you can deal with higher rpm and a little slower up long steep grades, gas works ok for my 6.4.
@JD-fo6gs
@JD-fo6gs 3 жыл бұрын
Everything positive you just said is the same for a diesel everything negative with diesel is the same with gas you get bad fuel with gas or diesel and as far as repairs it's no different with a gas engine and a diesel engine if you have a warranty that covers a engine and powertrain parts for a diesel may cost more but they're also harder to break Maintenance cost equals out to about the same you'll change the oil twice in a gas versus once in a diesel for around the same mileage at the end of the second oil change for the gas engine. Granted they are a few more filters to change in a diesel. I still love the Hemi though the 6.4 is a beast for a gas engine.

Gas is more then diesel where we live, delete arw super easy You buy a spare ecm and swap it in for warranty work so zero tune codes are flagged. The exhuast literally take 15mins to put back on. The diesel engine will last 500k+ without an overhaul. With a tune it won't even know it has a load. I can beat stock vechles with 10k pounds behind me funny seeing people who can't pass a trailer. Maintence is much less on the diesel its built way heavier duty and inless your working it constantly its cheaper in the long run. The emission systems are trash and that's what cause all there issues.

I'm getting anxious, I hate to have more payments... but videos like this are pushing me in that direction. I need a bigger truck anyway don't really want the headaches associated with a diesel engine, although I understand the power and fuel differences realistically 90% of my towing is locally less than 200 mi whenever we do go out, as a daily driver this is a dope truck. Agreed. Diesel will tow 14K at 70 down the interstate with the cruise on without much fuss even pulling long hills and while also having to brake very little because of the exhaust brake. The gas can pull 14K but it wont maintain 70 on hills, it will be shifting a lot, and the engine will be screaming at over 5K RPM.

Sick and tired of the common rail electrical problems, fuel problems, sensor problems, cooling problems…. Just bought 2500 with 5.7 Hemi and 6 speed manual. We’ll see how it shakes out. It towed beautifully. 70 mph, all kinds of road surfaces. I did install the tpms sensors in the camper. My mpg was 7.5-8 towing, so that was less than the ecodiesel I had pulling the same camper. That got 11 mpg. Every temp was 30-40 degrees cooler than the 1500. Less sway and never seemed to be working hard to accelerate or maintain speed. The diesel is quieter. I've been looking for a truck to tow a 23' off-grid travel trailer for about 6 months now and just pulled the trigger on a low mile Level 2 2022 Power Wagon with the trailer towing technology package. My decision process was this: I initially considered diesel and talked to a friend at work who owns one. He said never get a diesel unless you plan on deleting it due to all the pollution crap they put on them such as the EGR valve, DPF filter, and the need for DEF. Another thing I considered was I wanted the most capable full-size 4X4 pickup truck available so the decision was made for me. The previous owner put a lot of professionally installed after-market stuff on it: light bar, air compressor, sliding rack for the box, throttle response controller, 37's, lift kit, and a bunch more. I went over the truck from top to bottom and it looks like the previous owner never had it off-road at all.

I think that if folks would put more genuine thought on what they really need the truck for as opposed to "I just want a diesel", more gassers may be purchased. Continual heavy pulling is a different story. With the issues surrounding aftertreatment on the Ram Cummins diesels being the majority of trouble codes, limp mode and out of service events, makes one consider the gassers even more as they have very little of that. BTW, I have a 3rd gen 5.9 Mega Cab since 2006 and before the EPA attack and wouldn't trade up to a aftertreatment Cummins until those issues are resolved which may never happen, who knows. Good video!!

The value in the diesels is undeniable as the miles rack up. Gas are a great option for a lot of people who dont tow heavy/often enough to justify the cost. What you said used to be true about diesels that they were just hitting their stride when gassers started to need repairs… Emissions completely turned that around. Gassers are still going when Emissions screw up the diesel and they need repairs. Diesels are still the best for towing heavy but that’s emissions just kills these trucks. But that 7.3 gasser is given them a good run for their money

The ECM is actually programmed to reduce engine rpm to 4500 if any overheating issues arise. Gas engines are designed to Rev higher, what the difference than hearing at diesel revving at 3500 close to ita recline? I pull 12k lbs of camper with my 6.4L 2500 all the time. Zero issues. But I'm a Hemi tech and really love these engines. With proper maintenance, they will outlive a lot more than they are given credit for. This dude was running 80 mph doing this. @@beaus3472 a diesel will do twice the work with 1/4 the fuel. The 900lbft+ at 1600rpm will always be easier on the ears and wallet than a 5000rpm wear fest in any gas engine. Poor engine taking that kind of abuse.
@jnk26
@jnk26 3 жыл бұрын
@@hahaadventures4838 well a V8 screaming up a hill at 5000rpm will be getting 2.5mpg so 1/4 the fuel is about 10mpg. On flat ground. Fuel usage goes up with rpm. 8 cylinders spinning 5000 times a minute is 20,000(5000rpm ÷ 2 =2500 shots per cylinder × 8 cylinders) shots of fuel per minute. A Cummins cruising along at 1700 is 5100 shots (1700 ÷ 2 = 850 shots cylinder × 6 cylinders) so the math is not far off either. The cummins going up hill isn't kicking back to 5000rpm where the 380ish hp(400ish lbft) is half the capability of the cummins at any speed(1600-2800rpm) the HO Cummins with 930lbft. Is pushing that til about 2100 then the torque starts to fall back up to the 2800rpm mark(385hp@2800rpm = 722lbft) what you are getting for your 5100 shots of fuel is twice the capability of the 20,000 shots in the gasser. Not failing to mention the pumping losses, way more friction, and wear. 5000 miles at 5000rpm will wipe out a gas motor quick. Where the diesel will live at 17-1900rpm for years and years.

I have a 2019 Laramie, with the 6.4. I've towed the max (14,500lbs) my truck is rated at (maybe a little more). I've never used wdh on mine, and it's been fantastic. The one time I did try a wdh hitch was with a 27 ft travel trailer, but I ended up disconnecting all of it. It wasn't needed, and I was hoping the trailer tounge with drop more, but it didn't. The trucks are wonderful to tow with. Unless you're towing really heavy, I wouldn't bother with wdh. Your call though. Just invest in a decent hitch that can take the weight. I went with a weigh safe hitch, the one that has the little scale on it for tounge weight, only because I dislike the look of the hitches with both the balls on them. The hitch I have is super easy to swap the ball sizes with no tools, and it's rated at 14,500 lbs, same as the trucks tow rating.

Dodge should use this opportunity to use the hellepant's 7 liter aluminum hemi, make it NA, tune it for tq, and pump out 450 hp and 500 tq. Since it will be for trucks, it doesnt have to comply with emission standards. Not saying the current 6.4 is bad. Diesel is here to stay. Unfortunately the country will need to suffer through a generation of terrible electric vehicles before sanity returns. Wether you like it or not eletric will be the future. Once we learn to harness and collect power more efficient it will take over. Eletric motors have so much torq they don't even need transmissions, they will out pull a diesel anyday. There have been combination vechles made with all eletric motors ran by a diesel generator. Pretty neat I suggest looking it up. I think hybrids should be more of our focus then all eletric. But yes batteries have terrible emissions. But the world heals itself faster then we are destroying it despite what you may see on the news. We have more Forrest and trees today then we did 100 years ago. I own a business in Forrest restoration, we work directly with coal mines. They replant 10 times what they destroyed and keep it maintained and under protection for animal sanctuaries.

As far as performance the acceleration was good. I’m a little surprised at the squat. Now I know you don’t exactly know your tongue weight and I also don’t exactly know mine but I would bet they are similar seeing as how I have a 520 Foreman pulled all the way to the front of my trailer. No. Just a B&W tow and stow. I’ve thought about getting a WDH but I really don’t have any sway and mainly too I never have to get on an Interstate. My max speed is between 60-65 mph. I will say it definitely looks squatted with my trailer but it has very minimal rake from the factory. That Ram in this video wouldn’t have even looked squatted without the level kit. I’m having trouble deciding if I want the Ram 3500 6.4 Hemi and 410s or the Ford F-350 7.3 Godzilla and 430s for a 5er in the future. The dry unloaded of the 5er I was looking at is like 9300lbs or so.

That truck is a 🦄 . I do have some footage but need to figure out a way to put a video together with it. Either truck will pull that like it’s not back there 👍🏾

@@JB_WhoWork cool thanks man. I’ve liked the Ford for a little while now but I’ve also been looking at the Ram as well. I was thinking about a 2500 but I know I need a higher payload for a 5er since the 2500s are like 3000lbs of payload. I would also consider the new Chevy 2500HD 6.6 gasser as a daily driver and occasional worker as they have a slightly higher payload than a Ram 2500. From what I understand the only differences is the payload numbers from a Ram 2500 to 3500 as well as the Chevy 2500 to 3500 I believe the tow numbers are the same from the 3/4 to the 1 ton gassers.

@@JB_WhoWork so let me ask you JB. With the Ram 3500 6.4 Hemi with 410s or the F350 7.3 with 430s. Would either of those pull a 5th wheel that has a GVWR of like 14,000 lbs? The one I’m looking at is the Forest River Arctic Wolf 3990 suite the UVW is like 11,300lbs and is like 42 ft long. I’m also looking at the Chevy 2500HD 6.6 gasser with the 373s for a TT that’s 8500 lbs UVW and 9800lbs GVWR it’s 36.5 ft long, it’s the Forest River Wildwood 31KQBTS. Sorry I have so many questions man I just know you have a lot of knowledge in this department.

I would consider thinking about some places you would like to travel in the future and if any of those places would require you to go up/down steep grades, I would consider throwing a diesel in the mix. A gasser from either 3 will pull 14k no problem (so long as you get the highest numerical axle ratio) but stopping it down grades is where I would be mostly concerned. If you live in Fl, then these trucks will feel like deals from the early 2010’s 👍🏾

Gas is gas, requires high quality maintenance in order to have high quality results with no problem. Having mentality that I can beat on gas truck with just OK factory recommended intervals then problem are not far from you. 6.4 hemi used engine is very expensive, same price as used cummins.
