His record against the Big 3 was even better if looking only at Thiem's "prime years" From 2018-20, he was 4-4 vs Nadal 4-2 vs Djokovic and 3-1 vs Federer Ofc the Big 3 were all over 30 by then, but it's still some achievement that the other young players of the time can't boast

Prime Thiem's achievements: In a stretch of 5 meetings vs Nole, Thiem won 4. Included: -A 5th set 7-5 win vs Nole (how often does Nole lose close 5th sets?) Ya that was huge for Domi. In a stretch of 21 slam semis played, that is the only one Novak has lost since Nishikori's major upset at USO 2014. -A final set tiebreak win from a DOUBLE MINIBREAK DOWN. -Bagelled Novak at FO 2017 (Nole wasnt 100% but even then he still normally finds a way, yet Domi BAGELLED Nole at a SLAM. When was the last time someone did that before FO 2017? Then led Djokovic 2 sets to 1 in the AO 2020 final. Couldnt get it done but rare to see Nole lose sets in AO SF + F. And thiem won 2 sets there. And then again ATP finals with no crowd help he beats Djokovic from 0-4 down in the deciding set tiebreak after blowing 4 match points in the 2nd set. Crazy mental effort against the greatest frontrunner + mental warrior in the history of tennis. Beat Nadal once every year on clay from 2016-2019. Also 2 wins vs Rafa in 2020. AO and ATP finals. Perfect 5-0 in tiebreaks vs Rafa in 2020. Thiem was 7-2 in tiebreaks vs Nadal overall. The 2 losses, Madrid 2017 final 1st set and USO 2018 5th set tiebreak in the QF. Domi went 3-0 vs Federer in 2019. Overall Domi led that h2h 5-2. Beat Roger on ALL THREE surfaces. He never beat a big 3 guy in a slam final but he got a well earned slam title in 2020. It wasnt a big 3 opponent but he did it from 2 sets down with no crowd. Remarkable mental effort to come through that final. A bit lucky that Novak did beat himself a week earlier, but Domi really deserved that USO title. Prime Thiem was really really good. A real shame he isnt what he was in 2016-2020. And it looks more and more likely he will never reach that level again. Just doesn't have it mentally anymore and showing no signs he will get back there.

@J_NoNamesLeft73
@J_NoNamesLeft73 11 ай бұрын
@@Bowl849 Yup, 2018. Thiem won the first set 6-0. Nadal only won 7 points in the whole set. Took a lion hearted effort for Nadal to come back and take down Thiem, in the end 7-5 in the fifth and that left him so drained that despite two full days of rest between that epic QF and his SF with Del Potro, his body was not able to recover in time and Nadal retired injured down 2 sets to 0 and didnt play the rest of the year. But thats how good Thiem was in 2017-20. Was able to beat and challenge the big 3 at slams. Even when he lost, many of those matches were really close. Not to mention winning final set tiebreaks from Djokovic from a DOUBLE minibreak down...who else has ever done that vs Djokovic? No one that I can think of. Oh ya, Thiem did that not once but TWICE.
@ominoserzuschauer6286
@ominoserzuschauer6286 11 ай бұрын
Honestly I still haven't given up hope yet. Thiem always had some concentration issues every now and then. Sometimes he lacked motivation or commitment or was just off somehow, even in his prime. For example he lost in the 1st round of the Cincinnati Masters (which where played in NY that year) right before he went on to win teh USO. And it was a dreadful performance. So it's not out of characters for him to lose i strange and unconvincing ways, like he does now often. I think what he really needs is a BIG win against a BIG player. He came close twice against Tsitsipas this season. Who knows what could have happened already this season if he had pulled through in one of them. Or even better would be if he wins a title. I think he just needs to recapture that winning feeling to remind him of what a player he used to be and how that feels. I still believe he has it in him, but I think it should happen this season...

No23VAK was disqualified because he hit the line person, and Dominick Them won that USO title.You claim that he " deserved" that title, and I would like to have seen him " earn" that title in a match vs.Djokovic.Since Thiem won that USO title, I am not sure he won another one , and he is not a young kid anymore.

I'm wondering why you didnt mention his 2017 US Open match with Del Potro or his 2018 Us Open match with Nadal. Those two matches to me were the most telling that Thiem was a serious threat on hardcourt. Those two matches were absolute block busters and the power Thiem was producing was out of this world. Thiem is the reason I decided to switch to a one handed backhand at 21 and it was one of the best decisions in my tennis career

Nice video. Was a little surprised that you didn't mention his change in coaches to Nicolas Massu in 2019, which played a key role to performing better on hard and grass courts. Working under Massu is where he changed his forehand a lot by drastically shortening his backswing helping him take the ball earlier, which was very helpful particularly on grass and hard court, but it also helped on clay. I was very excited for him when he won his grand slam, but sadly injuries started piling up, and he began to struggle with his passion for the game.

Thiem and Federer were my favourite players on tour back in the day. I was incredibly torn back at that Indian Wells final and I thought it would be a passing-of-guard of sorts. Unfortunately, Thiem has been plagued with injuries. One interesting thing I noticed when he started finding more success on hard courts was his increased aggressiveness on the surface. He stood wayyyyy closer to the baseline and took shots very very early. He lost some matches due to the number of errors he was making. But when he was on, he was ON. Really like his honesty and self-assessment off the court too.

As someone who played table tennis, basketball, and fps games and now plays tennis, hitting a more than 45 degree wrist angle parallel to the body puts too much recoil on the wrist, furthermore if you are used to put more force on the wrist to generate more spin. It is insane how it hurts.

But when thiem at his prime, he lost to thiem in a five setter in 2019 semi final, and I don’t think 2023 djokovic is better than 2019 djokovic. Which means thiem is at least as good as djokovic on clay and better than Alvarez. And on Australian open, djokovic beat every opponent easily in three sets during the final since 2019 except for 2020 which he was pushed to five set by thiem, something only nadal did in 2012, and thiem was the only one who had a 2:1 lead against djokovic . Sadly kinda true. He's good but I'd honestly put Zverev above him overall. Same with Medvedev ofc

How many times these guys defeated nadal on clay?🤡dude has defeated nadal 4 times on clay (second after novak) has made RG SF 4 times in a row along with 2 consecutive finals losing both to nadal and also has defeated nole twice in roland garros . Which of the above mentioned player have done this?😂for that reason he is the prince of clay 😏

@@aarinhegde6083 Well Djokovic himself is clearly far better on clay as described by yourself by H2H against Nadal and RG consecutive finals. H2H can be misleading as players match up differently and play each other at different times. I think Thiem was quite fortunate with when he was playing well as it coincided with Djokovic and Nadal being out of form. Thiem is never beating pre-2015 Nadal or 2011-2016 Djokovic on Clay. For Roland Garros win rate (so H2H against all players) Thiem is 35th all time and 9th of all time, behind Khachanov! With regards to Roland Garros SFs and Fs, he has the same Fs as Wawrinka and Ruud, with Ruud also making 2 in a row, and Stan actually winning one of his! Murray also has more SFs than Thiem, also making 4 in a row. As I said Thiem has no big tournaments on Clay, even playing many with Nadal not being there. His record at the big tournaments do not stand out, he can only compete at 250s and 500s (and not even Challengers at the moment, has competed in 3 clay Challengers this year and is 3-5)
