Sebastian Vettel began the decade dominating at the wheel of his Red Bull winning 4 straight drivers titles, he set multiple records and was etched into the Formula 1 history books along some of the greatest drivers in F1 history. Although his years at Ferrari haven’t yielded as much success Vettel in his prime was up there with the very best there ever was, but what made Vettel so special, and how good was Vettel in his prime?

Vettel at the 2nd half of 2013 was some of the most impressive drives I've seen in f1 along with Alonso in 2012. Unfortunately the hybrid era took a toll on Vettel and he didn't deliver the same pace he displayed in 2013. That year he was in perfect control with the car and had no problems going all out, he was confident that the car could handle the pace. I think the mentality battle is what hurt Vettel , pressure from fresh drivers that made him lose focus. He also needs a car he can push to the limit rather than holding back pace just to avoid spinning out. It would've been interesting to see how well every f1 driver would perform if everyone got a car perfect for their driving style. So many factors to take in.

@@parkershaw8529 In terms of raw speed it was the McLaren. It may sound strange and you may ask if I'm insane, Hamilton and Button finished 4th and 5th in the championship, over 90 points behind Vettel, how can the McLaren have been the faster car? But if you look at pole positions (8) and race wins (7) McLaren matched Red Bull. But the thing is, while Red Bull and Vettel had their technical failures, but not too many team or driver errors, McLaren could have achieved much, much more if they wouldn't have fucked up every race possible! A bad pitstop in half of the races where they lost time, team mistakes in qualifying (Spain 2012, Hamilton on pole but disqualified for not having enough fuel)and races, driving or judgment errors, bad luck, bad reliability, and the list goes on and on. McLaren choked so hard in 2012 that they didn't finish 1st in the constructors, but 3rd, even behind Ferrari that had an absolute dog of a car in the beginning of 2012 with Felipe Massa being nearly useless in the 1st half of the season. Even Kimi Raikkonen in the slower Lotus finished the championship higher up than both McLaren drivers. The speed was there, but the McLaren team was nowhere near top notch.

That's like saying that the SF90 was an arguably faster car than the W10 in 2019. 2012 is also very debatable but you can at least argue about that though McLaren had worse reliability and worse tyre wear compared to Red Bull.

2011 is probably the season that best sums up Vettel's prime, and even career. That 2011 Red Bull was *fast* , but it never seemed to be more than a tenth to 3 tenths a lap over the likes of McLaren and Ferrari most weekends. Paul Hembery (Former Motorsport director and then Executive director at Pirreli) mentioned how coming into 2011, that Vettel was the only driver to visit the factory and study the tires to try and gain an advantage, and based on Webber and Vettel being neck and neck all 2010 and then Webber being miles off in 2011 whilst struggling with tires, I'd say it paid off considerably. Vettel has never been the fastest driver or most talented driver like Hamilton or Alonso, but his work ethic and the effort he'll put in to gain any advantage he can is what seperated him even further from the rest of the field. Ironically it's a similar strategy that someone with almost the exact same career stats as him had, Alain Prost.

I have mixed feelings about his “arrogance” back in his time with Red Bull. Yes he disobeyed team orders and did everything that would benefit only himself but come on.. he’s a F1 driver. He’s there to win, not to finish 3th or even 2th. Only the top step is what counts for the real champions. Look at Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc.. they’re not satisfied unless it’s number 1. Thanks for this video, agreed Vettel doesn’t get the respect he deserves. It’s amazing how quick people point to the car with Vettel, and point to the driver with Hamilton. Mercedes has been way more dominant than red bull for these past years. I guarantee if you had put another top driver, like Vettel, in that Mercedes for these past years he would have won every title as well But I think that’s beside the point. I feel that when Vettel is in a car he doesn’t like, whilst still being a good driver, he isn’t amazing - and prone to mistakes. He doesn’t have Alonso-esque traits of pulling something out of a car he doesn’t like. However if you put him in a car he likes, everything suddenly just clicks, and then I feel he is unstoppable. In a car he likes, I don’t think that anyone can even come close to him. He just has supreme confidence, and I remember him driving away, breaking drs within 2 laps, disappearing up the road and setting fastest laps for fun. In his championship winning years, and especially 2011 and 2013, I think if you had Hamilton, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Alonso, Verstappen - whoever as his teammate it doesn’t matter. Vettel would still have won. That’s where his real strength lies. When he’s in the zone he truly is unbeatable. He just doesn’t get the love and respect he has earned. Imagine if some 19 year old rocked up and took pole and a race win in a Toro Rosso in their first full season today people would lose their minds. I just hope he gets another chance to prove to everyone why he’s a true champion

The Brawn was the 4th best car by the end behind. Red Bull, McLaren and maybe on par or bit slower than the Ferrari. Also if you notice Barichello still win few more GP in the later stage of the season. Why? As we know Brawn have no Budget and they only have 3 chassis. Barichello damaged his original chassis and got the brand new 3rd chassis that's why. Button spend the entire season with the car almost identical to the car he started the season with. A single chassis. Of course by the end that car is very compromised. Not to mention the car perform best in the very hot weather. While we all know Button perform best at wet. The car didn't actually suit him. If a champion is unworthy because he have the best car. Then there is no champions that is worthy. Not a single one. Anyway nice talking to you. Have a nice day

Good video of the best driver of his era. We see how Hamilton dominates in the Mercedes but I have never seen the epic driver/car combination that Vettel and Red Bull gave us in 2013. Nine straight wins. And that was just one championship out of four. I do hope Vettel bows out honourably, in a winning car. He and the sport deserve it.

10:36 Correction: he didn't match Schumacher for the most consecutive wins in a season. Just total wins in a season (like you said) But Schumacher never won more than 7 in a row (however he did 12 out of 13, which is damn good as well 😄) Vettel's 9 matched him with Ascari (unless you count the American GP on an oval in 1953 in which Ascari, like half of the F1 field, didn't even participate. He won 9 consecutive races that he participated in. 7 before, and 2 after that American GP) Whether you count that as 7 or as 9 for Ascari, Vettel is the only driver to date who won 9 in a row in one season

This video is really misleading. He barely mentions tire management at all and it was one of RedBulls greatest advantages in that era. The Pirelli tires when they were first introduced were a nightmare and the redbull cars were always the kindest to them, likely because of how good their aero was. The racing was honestly pretty boring back then. Seb would get pole because the RedBull was the fastest car and then he'd lead the whole race and win because everyone behind him fighting to actually get up positions would shred their tires too quickly. Even in one of the clips in the video you can hear it happening. Vettel sets the fastest lap against team orders, but his time gets pretty immediately smashed by Raikkonen on fresher tires.

I just cant understand fans who dont aknowledge the brilliance of him. For me, as a german I am obviously fanboying, but I think I have a few fair points, which are mainly covered in this video. I want to touch on a new thing anyway and maybe discuss it a little bit: I am generally curious, whether people believe that Hamilton is way beyond Sebs level, because Hamilton is British and Seb is not. Sounds rude, but let me explain. As a formula 1 fan, the media you consume is mostly british. It is normal that the media exaggurates a little bit about sportsmen from their country. I dont want to blame them for that, it is naturall. In germany, Seb was hyped like none other in his prime, too. But people who are not from germany dont consume german media (obviously). Hamilton though is hyped by his fellow statemen, but people from every country listen to the opinions of these experts, who make him out to be in the top 3 of formula 1 ever. Dont get me wrong, I also believe that Hamilton's level of skill is slightly above Vettels, but when I hear phrases like "you cant even compare these 2 drivers anymore", I get really upset. Comparing the dominance of Red Bull with Merc, I think it is fair to say that the car of Mercedes during the last years (exception 2018) was more dominant than any Red Bull car in the 2010 - 2014 era. Vettel got absolutly hated for his dominance back then, but Lewis isnt. Comparing the dominance, Lewis couldnt secure every world championship in his dominant car and was beaten by Nico Rosberg (I know he had but luck, but Nico put himself in a position to capitalize on that). I think 2016 is quiet comparable with 2010. With the difference, that although Vettel suffered bad luck during the year, he was able to maximize his chances and win the world champion ship. Both drivers made history in dominant cars, with Mercedes dominance beeing longer than the dominance of Red Bull, why do people say that you cannot even compare these 2 legends. I hope I made my points clear and didnt set anybody up with my opinion, since it is kind of hard to get a message across properly over writing. Again, I believe Lewis is one of the greatest ever, but I think that Vettel is as well. I am very open for debating about this.

I actually think, the moment he broke was the Monza 2018 qualifying. Until then it was very easily possible, that he, not Hamilton, would become 5times world champion. Most people say, that Germany that year was his breaking point, but let's not forget, that he won Belgium right after that with a great overtake over Hamilton. But I just think, that from that on he didn't feel Ferrari's 100% support anymore, because they made that (in my opinion ridiculous) decision of him being a toe to Räikkönen. Now, of course you could argue, that a 4time world champion should be above that, but I think the pressure you have when driving for Ferrari and the feeling of being let down by his team, somehow just made him really uncomfortable in racing. Before Monza 2018 he drove brilliant races every season, since then I can't remember any race, where it was just pure Vettel-Brilliance. And yes, of course he has won Singapore 2019, but his move on Gasly there could have very easily ended up in tears. So, I would say, he still has the potential to be in his prime again, but he needs an environment, where he feels good and 100% supported by his team. I don't know, if Ferrari can provide that environment, but then again, I also think, that no other team can.

Stop with the hate, support who you support, be it a specific driver or team, and just appreciate that we could see these great drivers compete.

I remember growing up watching vettel every weekend. I had my dad buy me the documentary or the f1 season movie thing about mostly him. I think it was called victorious vettel

Great video! People tend to see him as just a driver who makes a lot of mistakes and forget how amazing he was. I remember what Martin Brundle said about him live when he did make a mistake in the 2011 Canadian GP and Button overtook him: 'Sebastian Vettel finally showing he's human'.

I agree with everything you said about sebastian and he is my favourite driver either, i wish i could see him for one more time as an 5 times champion in his red but unfortunately i won't, now as the ending of his career i just want to remember his redbull years which were absolutely amazing and i felt like a really happy guy watching my first and last one favourite driver being a 4 times champion in F1
