You only need 2 chords to make a great sounding guitar riff. The best guitarists of all time use this simple technique to make their riffs memorable. It all comes down to playing within the chord. If you listen to great guitar riffs, the one thing they have in common is "playing within the chord". Many of the best riffs involve playing 1 or 2 notes from a chord and then adding some percussive rhythm to it. This guitar lesson will give you some easy ways to create your own guitar riffs.

Hey, Tom! I've noticed that Alan uses his guitar for percussion all the time! I saw a video of them doing a concert, and I forget which song it was, but Alan was playing different lead breaks. The whole rest of the time, he was just scratching away on muted strings, making percussion! I couldn't help but notice. And, he was creating that "swing beat" that so many rock bands do. It was great, and he had so much energy! Anyway, thanks for this video. All your videos are interesting. I love your style. (Playing and video "analysis.") Keep on rocking! 👍 👌 This whole video was great. I just (finally) finished it, got interrupted about 2/3 through. Good insight. Thanks for throwing those other riffs out by other artists. Overall a great video with great licks & insight. I like your analogy to "cooking up" great riffs. I've been doing some of that lately too, while working on some new original stuff, during the same time period as learning a couple of Skynyrd songs!

Leon made a remark in a magazine one time about L.S.'s music "the complexity of simplicity " unquote. Enjoyed the video and PLAY SAFE OUT THERE! Question, do you like the Allen Collins Band album HERE, THERE, and Back?

Great video Tom. One of my favorite Skynyrd songs to play. Thanks for showing the correct way to play the rhythm with the single note run correctly. There’s a lot of small and important details in all Skynyrd songs. That Smell is no exception with all three guitar players playing different stuff throughout the song.

Lots of Aerosmith tunes are similar to this. On casual listen, they sound simple. Then if you dig deeper, you'll kill your fingers getting the riff correct

Great stuff, Tom. I love listening to you play. Really cool all you can do with just a couple chords. I've been working on Gary Rossington's lead solo in That Smell the last couple days. I can play it all the way through, but not fully up to speed yet.

That's awesome Ken! Glad to hear you're getting That Smell down. There's a lot of nuances in there that Gary does. I find working on sliding between 3rd 5th and 7th frets helps with increasing speed.

Perhaps mention that the second chord is A minor - not A - earlier than 2:22?
