I've been fortunate enough to have been able to play a hand full of Pete Dye designed courses. I am from Indiana so we do have a lot here. I played the course he was talking about in Northern Indiana and I played The Fort in Indianapolis and a few others. The Fort, rumor has it, Mr Dye charged a $1 fee for him to design the course just so the developers would keep the course public and affordable. It's next to a State Park and Pete wanted everyone to have the chance to play the course and enjoy the wildlife. He was a generous and great man that did more for golf and golfer alike than he ever dreamed.

Chats like this, and the one with Tom Doak, are such a cool perspective on golf. There’s really nothing like it. There are interviews, but this is a level deeper, more intimate. And I enjoy the game even more because if it. Thanks EAL crew.

Erik you inspire me with every video. Your commitment to the sport and more importantly the people’s stories behind it, is what being a sports fan and journalist is all about.

Amen Pete! First, I want to thank Pete for sharing his love for the course. Its obvious he really cares about the game and the course. Secondly... I think a longer cut could add to the challenge of the game and make it more interesting.

This man would love the course I work at, we cut the greens to the modern day standards. But due to the fact that there are 8 of us on our best day for an 18 hole course, we simply cannot maintain everything to an immaculate level. We charge around 20-30 bucks for 18 holes with a cart for members and and around 50 for non. We try to keep our prices low. Since our new management has taken over the course has been looming better and better though, despite the low employee numbers.

Same here. There's 4 of us for 18 holes. We do what we can do, the golfers still appreciate it. Last year we did 49,000 rounds.

I personaly have to agree about houses and golf courses. In ne florida we probably have 150 golf courses, most through a neighborhood. It honestly isnt as fun as an open track. Alot of times its narrow fairways with water and bunkers on one side and impenetrable swamp on the other. Laws regulating the actual land prevent so much from being cleared or x amount must be left undisturbed. So you literaly have ankle deep mud swamp and chest high palmetto bushes so thick you lose a ball 6 inches into it, all the way down one side, and water seperating the course and houses on the other. Theres no where to miss, theres no bail out spots. You either hit fairways and greens or your ball is virtualy dead.

Golf was never meant to be played in immaculate conditions. Quit raking bunkers and let the rough be rough.

Golf courses should sit in their natural environment. Let the rough be rough and natural. There is no need to have the whole hole like a bowling green. Leave 75 yards of rough in front of the tee. Let the rough grow up 20 yards either side of the fairway. Many UK courses aren't long but are tough because when you miss the fairway you are in trouble. Too many courses around the world as long as you don't hit it into the water you have a shot no matter how wild your drive.

The problem with that is pace of play. 6 inches of rough on a saturday morning is a 6 hour round waiting to happen.
