Most of the reasons for its "safety" was its Senshado Approved Shells where it fuctions similar to a normal shell but wasn't made to spread shrapnel and penetrate the tank. Other reasons has to be this special coating called plot armor.

In the manga it states, the tanks are layered with carbon fiber, so when they are destroyed nobody dies, and there only has been 2 instances of tankers getting hurt, when Miho saved the people from the sinking tank, and when Hina was unconcious.

Don't worry they just use clones of the tank drivers for the tournaments since they always die when their tank explodes

If i remember correctly, they use live ammunition but the tanks have some kind of special coating where the round doesn't "fully" penetrate the armour, so that it doesn't harm the occupants within the inside of the tanks, and why the white flags show on the tank when its been "knocked out" , and i think miho did say that injuries during matches are very-very-rare except for as someone already mentioned the previous time that miho was part of kuromorimine vs pravda.

Just idea of a tank of an average 33 tons that fly around battlefield just because hit by a shell is sci-fi. Not to mention the entirety of the rest of the Anime. But... It's just funny.

Also in Girls Und Panzer Das Finale part 2 or 3 when Anzio was in a match against St. Gloriana they were using the mobility of their Tankettes to throw the Crusader tanks into the water.

One of the closest cases you couldn't explain away with pimped-out armor was in the Anzio OVA were we see one CV.33 land on its side and yeeting out both crew members. If it had then toppled over it would've squashed one of them.

As far as I understand, the WW2 tanks in Girls und Panzer are covered with extra carbon armor from the inside to protect the crew, unlike the original versions of the tanks.
