It was not love. Through God, all that he has made and brings to you is good. These women were not of the God of Israel, thus it could not be love. His mind was bewitched. I disagree with that because the bible disagrees with it as well. First of all every king of Israel at that time had to have a hand written copy of the book of the law. So Solomon knew that God's law was against having wives that were not worshipers of the same God that Solomon originally worshiped. In time they got to Solomon and he agreed to let them make altars to their gods in God's own Temple of worship. That was his downfall instead of the sheer number. So if he had a thousand wives that all worshiped the same god he did then there wouldn't be a problem. That is why the bible tells us not to marry outside of our own faith. That is because it will bring us down instead of lifting the other up. Now this doesn't mean that when you become a believer in God if your mate isn't the marriage is over. Instead it is saying to those that are believers not to marry outside of your own faith. Because instead of your good rubbing off on them. Their bad is likely to rub off on you changing who you are.

So again I would say that it was the foreign wives that Solomon took that turned his heart away from serving the true God as the bible states. David Solomon's father had more than one wife. Why did God allow David and other faithful servants of times past to have more than one wife. The bible doesn't say why. But we do know that single women back then wouldn't be able to take care of themselves like they can now without a husband as a provider. If you doubt that it was the foreign wives that turned Solomon's heart away from serving God like David his father then look at 1 Kings 11:1-8.
