I'm similar in the sense that I also have an US native accent that can easily pass apparently. So far almost everybody including the many Americans I've met say they wouldn't have known that it wasn't my first language, and some still forget sometimes hehe! I also never studied English and literally taught myself the language fairly quickly. Like Izzy, just by playing video games, watching movies and listening to music basically. Nothing more. Fun, free and efficient! :) The reason is somewhat the same as well. I felt it would likely be the most important skill necessary in allowing me to massively extent the scoop of my world and with it the ability to fully interact, understand and experience everything within that additional achieved reach. Not really sure why it sounds so indistinguishable though, besides it being spoken in the forementioned ways I learned it from I guess.

Hey Debora, thanks for writing! In the phrase "native like level," the word "like" functions as an adverb modifying the noun "level." Here, "like" is used to describe the level as resembling or being similar to that of a native speaker. So, the phrase "native like level" means a level of proficiency in English that is comparable to that of a native speaker.

I have a question to those who don’t agree that the person in this video sounds like a native: 1. What do you believe gives him away as far as accent is concerned? 2. If you don’t believe you can totally sound like a native if you have acquired the language late in life, would you agree that it is possible to learn to sound like one some of the time, in other words, for instance, 70% or 50% of the time in a conversation? This is just an example. I am curious to know your thoughts.

@corystajduhar
@corystajduhar Ай бұрын
Grammar is the structure of the language. It's absolutely essential. It can be acquired and learned consciously and subconsciously. Both methods should be used. So many native-speakers need to spend more time learning grammatical structures. In English, native-speakers always have huge problems with the past participle. They often say: "It has began, it has took, I haven't sang, have you ever swam, the dog was ran over" instead of "begun, taken, sung, swum and run." Supposed educated native English-speakers like doctors, lawyers, and pastors often say "Would you like to go to dinner with my sister and I?" They actually think that using "I" is the correct pronoun. They would never say "with I," because it sounds wrong to them, but saying "with my sister and I" doesn't sound wrong to them. When learning a second language, we should learn in context and learn through experiences and by using every resource available, but we can also consciously program our minds by deliberately learning phrases that we can use to memorize important structures (grammar) and we can study rules that can help us understand the reason certain structures/patterns are used. If you speak a language and it conforms to the common patterns and structure of the language in question, you know grammar.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't find it helpful for you. The learning process can happen at any age in life, and what matters more than the age you are learning is the consistency and how much you immerse yourself in the language. I didn’t get how he managed to speak the language like a native. He wasn’t clear enough, what he said didn’t make sense to me. There’s more to it that he didn’t wanna share despite Ethan kept on asking, almost digging into it. He could have been much more substantial and truthful but he ended up being restrained and redundant. How bad!

I was about 5-6 when I watched The Lord of The Rings trilogy for the first time and at the time I became addicted to this like I used to watch it every day or every other day... My family thought I'm really crazy about that because how many times you can rewatch the same movie without getting bored, right? Well, I was pretty solid and sturdy :) It's a masterpiece for me and will be forever and it is much better than movies that are created nowadays. Maybe not all of them but most of them. So this is my humble opinion about LOTR. Harry Potter is also great, even better for kids as there's more young characters in Harry Potter's movies.

@@RealLifeEnglish1 I was just shocked to know that it is the case nowadays since those movies and stories are not for very young children... but yet again I am not their parents😅😅😅😅 nowdays things are very different when it comes to language learning. I have two students that can make even different accents because they play video games and are online all the time. And no you don't need a coursebook to learn... but you do need to learn grammar otherwise here jn England nobody would go to school anymore 😆

He keeps on talking about connection with culture but it is not the point here. This interview wasn’t useful at all for us learners, actually
