I’ll use the 32 kg for single on swings, and on occasion, I do double outside the leg swings with 2 32kg bells. I never rep the doubles past 10, because form is critical (obviously) I’ll definitely do higher rep sets with a single 24 or 32 though.

In my brief experimentation, it seems that if you want to go heavy and high volume with a kettlebell hip hinge, the DK clean seems to be the best bet. You can still move through them quickly, but there's a clear finish that allows the body to briefly "reset" for lack of a better term, and gives clear feedback to the posture being utilized.

Just curious about anyone’s thoughts on adjustable kettlebells vs the solid cast iron bells. I have a York adjustable one with a screw on lock and holds up to 70lbs of weight plates. I like it because I can lower the weight for get ups and then load it up for swings and presses. (I have to use a wrist protector so the weight plates don’t cut into my forearm but no biggie). Can pretty much do everything with the exception of snatches. My kettlebell enthusiast friends keep telling me to get a “real” bell and that I would notice a difference. Is that right - can’t really see how it would matter that much and I’d have to get 2-3 bells to cover the different weights I use for various exercises. If it is that much more beneficial I will invest the $. (I have adjustable dumbbells and a barbell too so exercise variety is not the issue ). Thanks.

Thank you very much for your opinion! I am in a little dilemma right now. I own a 24 kg kettlebell since years. I have been doing Crossfit in the past for a couple of years and I can say I have been instructed on the technique by coaches and believe to be doing a fine swing at least. Currently, I have shifted my entire workout routine from a gym to my home, initiated by the lockdown action going on, but I intend to keep it that way, as I taught myself a solid routine just by using a pullup bar and a pair of gymnast rings. Now, what I am missing is the leg work and lower back/posterior chain stimulation. Therefore I resorted to my 24 kg kettlebell. I was thinking of doing one or two days of intense swings to train these areas that the rings and pullup bar cannot help me with and adding an explosive and breath intense component to my training as well. However, I am capable of doing 100 swings in a row in good form and even then it is the grip strength rather than the glutes, back, or hams that have me resigning. I think it is time for me to increase the weight of the kettlebell, especially as heavy swings are my goal. 100 is just too much ''cardio'' to my taste. I love interval sprints and airbike tabatas as well and I intend to have a somewhat similar effect with the kettlebell swing, instead of going on what feels like forever. I was thinking of doing for example five sets of 5 to 20 swings, and that I just get some more strain on my body and the bigger muscles and stamina. Now, I do not want to waste money on a kettlebell that in the end is too heavy or too light. I do not want to go for a 32, because I remember from my Crossfit times that this did not feel too different from swinging the 24. I thought I would rather go so far that I have my 24 kb for cardio and practicing more challenging movements like the snatch or the getup, and reserving one significantly heavier one for the heavy swings in the lower rep range. I am 31 years old, 6 foot 2, and 190 pounds. I am flirting with a 40 kg kettlebell. Do you think this is a reasonable choice for my goal? Thank you so much in advance.

Regarding your advice to avoid exceeding 32 kg for two-hand swings, does this imply that performing ABC with two pairs of 24 kg kettlebells is not recommended? Also, if a clean is considered a type of swing, as you mentioned, would it be inadvisable to attempt ABC with either a pair of 24 kg or 32 kg kettlebells? This point is a bit confusing to me. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you, Dan John, for all the invaluable guidance and support you provide. Your help means a great deal to me. Thank you so much.
@DanJohnStrengthCoach

The point is confusing because you took a video from "here" with a workout from "there." Two handed swings with the 32s really pull you forward and most people get "uglystyle" swings from there. I suggest the 24s and 32 for the ABC all the time. You can go as heavy as you want on the ABC within reason. And, thank you.

Excellent AND, since I weigh only 120 lbs (wet), I much prefer this sort of conversation, about "how heavy", to be in terms of percent of bodyweight. That said... I recently (last couple months) went from 44% to 58% and now working with 66%. I thought my techniques was pretty good, still think that, but I have learned a huge amount about tiny nuances that increase power by going "heavy". Very small power leaks become magnified and much easier to notice as do small changes in posture, where the weight transfers through my feet to the ground. I doubt I would even have found these with the 44% (24 kg) swings. Possible influence also though is that I went from KB to Core Blaster because...money! Thank you, Dan, for info and for inspiration!

Continuing to think about this and back in time: I realized that there is another risk not yet mentioned. As you swing higher %age of bodyweight, if you for some reason start to hinge just a wee bit too early, you can easily get launched "over the handle bars" and either do a quick front roll or face plant, depending on your past training and reflexes. The greater the %age of bodyweight you. are counterbalancing, the greater the risk, so the more perfect your timing needs to be. (Please, don't ask me how I know this)

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach and it will likely continue to do so... Funny story about me beginning my kettle bell journey: started out using a 28kg bell as my first contact with them... was surprised that in less then 2 weeks i got used to it and was having a great deal of fun and beneficial results with it(i was no stranger to barbell&dumbell workouts but my elbows, knees and especially low back&hips were not too happy with me(after a heavy duty work out for the next 2-3 days i was a stiffly walking zombie) but once i began incorporating kettle bell swings&goblet chair squats on my off days(nothing serious just 2-3 sets every other day) everything became pain free&less rigid and my muscle soreness was much less of a burden as before. I'm not exactly a fan of working out but I do it out of necessity to get&keep in shape(before starting to work out at my heavyist i was 129kg and every joint and especially my back was always hurting) So i try to keep my routines as short and effective as possible: 2 full body workouts per week(one heavy in the weekend when i can eat&rest as much as i need and one mid week with about 2/3 of weight&sets) and on my off days before going to sleep I simply do 2-3 sets of kettle swings&squats eat like a hog(sadly the intense hunger sensation is smth i battled with all my life and the most i can go without eating if i'm awake is 6h and unless I eat up before bed i will wake up because of hunger (and fail to go to sleep again afterwards) and 'pass out cold' till my timer wakes me up 7-8h later. Currently i'm 36yrs old(at 1.90m height) and happy to be at around 105kg(I aim to slowly lose about 10-15kg of them as i'm still a bit on the chubby side(can't see the abs but can feel them nice and proper) and currently working with a 36kg kettlebell(can do about 25 swings per set with it with good height on them, the bell goes up about chin high, hands parallel with the ground) and for goblet chair squats can do about 30 per set with it... i've had no injuries and no issues using it. I'm also at the moment considering to buy and use a heavier kettlebell especially for the squats but potentially also for the swings as swinging that 36kg bell seems to get easier&easier by the day... i'm currently eyeballing a 48kg kettle for my next purchase but i don't think i will ever need more then that.

Honestly if you want to hinge heavy get a barbell and do deadlifts or cleans. When there is no snap and power in the swing it’s not a swing imo

Oh my. Here I am doing 50 swings a day with a 64kg kettlebell not realising how stupid that is.

That’s not stupid. That’s just very hard. Now, it might be too much but it’s a great short term experiment

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach hi Dan thanks for the response. I am planning on going back into wrestling. Atm I do 10 2 armed clean and squats a day, 50 swings with that 64kg KB and 50 press ups with a 50kg weighted vest. Do you think that will give me sufficient strength getting back into wrestling? Atm I don’t have alot of time to work out so I just get in what I can. Looking forward to your response.

I'm not well-trained by any means, but I still get surprised hearing about people doing swings beyond even 24 or 28kg. I've often concerned myself with trying to go heavy on swings (and have only gone as heavy as 24kg), but lately I've dialed back to the 16kg and just focus on my form, heart rate, maintaining tension, and building volume. The nice thing about the swing, in my mind, is that the bell feels "heavier" if you're driving ample force into it so that it's really trying to launch away from you. This has been much more satisfying, educational, and sustainable to me than trying to increase the weight.

I was doing casual sets of a dozen head-level swings with the 40 kg, so I hit my wishlist and got the 92 kg from Rogue; this should be interesting. So far, yeah, belt level, ah, sways; swings is too strong a word.

24 and 32 what ?? Can you speak of commercially available weights. Anyways thanks for the valuable advice. I agree the spine has an upper limit tolerance limit.

I'm 70 years old and I warm up with 90lbs and 105 lbs before I swing my 120 lb bell. That's hard style, not that pussy style momentum/squat junk. Anything under 75 lbs feels like a helium filled balloon.

🙋 I’m 5’9”, 150# now at 65yo not >6’, >225#, do these recommendations that that into account? ❓, smaller frame persons? ❓ A: 🤔 There should be a recommendation based on percentages, 🧐 same as in competition there are different weight classes. 🙏🏼

Percents never work. They just don't. I recommend anyone over 35, male, should probably focus on the 20.
