Hollywood is filled with scandals. These days they seem to be a regular occurrence to the point that we often brush them off like its nothing. But there is one scandal that many point to as the first major scandal that changed everything. It resulted in the implementation of the Morality Clause and gave studios full control over everything, even the lives of actors.
In this video we talk about the case of Fatty Arbuckle and Virginia Rappe, the Hollywood Studio System, Morality Clause and how Hollywood took control of everything.

Chris Farley was offered the role of playing Fatty Arbuckle in a biopic, but the requirements were that he had to be sober for two years before he played the role. He tried having a last hoorah with his drugs and that's what killed him. Super sad.

Eric Stonestreet was also set to play him in a biopic for HBO in 2011, but those plans got scrapped.

i watched babylon and i don't know if anyone like me goes to imdb scrolling through trivia and Arbuckle came by and saw ur video i knew it was about him, i love everything about hollywood in 20s 30s & 40s, thanks to L.A. Confidential i started watching noir movies and such, thanks for the content ur providing its really my type of videos.

Are we not allowed to say the words “sexual assault” anymore? I had to repeat that part at around two minutes multiple times to finally understand what the hell he was saying.

Tbh, it's a grey area and we'd rather not take the risk. We've seen other KZfaqrs doing the same. Some people may be sensitive to certain words and phrases and we want to make sure not to affect those people.

I don't really write comments, but the poor quality of this one makes me. Few reasons: 1. very little info on the scandal, which is a problem because the details of it were the reason for such a strong reaction from studios; 2. the morality code is described very generally and the video does not really covers what it led to & does not cover the code's evolution; 3. Expressing surprise that actors/ actresses still need to work/ change to fit into the vision of director /studio in 2024 is just ridiculous. How is that a surprise- its a job, police officers or military personel also need to fulfil the criteria to be hired.

His name lives on in the UK, there is chain of American themed restaurants named after him, though now it's just called Arbuckle's. Interesting aside: it was started by a man named Pete Shotton, who used to play in a band called The Quarrymen. I gather his former bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney went on to achieve some success.

I truly appreciate your points and they're absolutely valid about the ambiguity of the morality clause on the part of the studios but accusations of murder really don't fall into morally ambiguous or legally ambiguous categories. It's appropriate to be concerned when your star is accused of such crimes and what about when actors choose to set aside the behaviors & crimes of directors like Roman Polanski? He seemed to really suffer no consequences from studios, actors, or the academy after becoming a fugitive he even won an Oscar. Sadly, sometimes the only line in the sand for studios and actors is whether or not they can gain from the situation, if they can then they'll be able to agree to do or be willing to overlook a lot.

This is about what Hollywood lets slide when they choose to do so and if you actually looked up the Roman Polanski situation, you'd see it a lot more disturbing than what Hollywood has fed into the main stream media of it just being a simple case of statutory rape. It does not end with Roman Polanski either, so many people in Hollywood look the other way when it benefits them.

I feel like we, the viewing audience, have way to low of a tolerance for suspension of disbelief. It has always bothered me that if a woman on a TV show falls pregnant, she either has to take time off, or they hide her body behind props. We could all just ignore the fact that she is pregnant, the actor is not the character.

Really? I thought the character the actress is supposed to play and signed into is not pregnant. It's just common sense. It's a role.
