Sited next to a band of cottonwoods and aspens occupying the former riverbed of the Snake River, Black Fox Ranch is a harmonious blend of history and modern living. This 35-acre property features a primary residence and a barn with stables, drawing inspiration from its past as a working cattle ranch. The landscape is enriched with 100-year-old irrigation ditches, remnants of a 19th-century trapper’s cabin, corrals, and game trails that host over 400 elk seasonally.
A Vision Rooted in Wildlife and Conservation
The clients, passionate about wildlife and conservation, chose this site to revive its historic use as a working ranch with livestock and hay production. Their love for horses influenced the placement of the barn, corral, and pastures close to the residence, ensuring a constant visual presence of the horses. The neighborhood offers access to miles of private riding trails that lead to the Snake River and Grand Teton National Park, enhancing the connection to nature.
Architectural Harmony with the Landscape
The three-bedroom residence, with its low-slung design, rises gradually from the meadow. It features a compact second story housing the primary bedroom suite and an office suite with a rooftop deck. The roof, with a long, low slope, is structured using a cross-laminated timber (CLT) system, providing a modern yet rustic touch. A deep overhang shelters an outdoor dining terrace, framing views of the Teton Mountains to the west and the Gros Ventre Range to the east.
Thoughtfully Designed Spaces
The exterior spaces are deliberately composed to wrap the perimeter of the building, offering panoramic views and options for sun or shade throughout the day. The L-shaped plan of the home separates the main living areas-living, dining, kitchen, den, and primary bedroom-from secondary areas including guest quarters, gym, sauna, and laundry room. Ground floor living areas open to sheltered outdoor spaces featuring a fire pit, pizza oven, and a stand of aspen trees.
Material Palette and Interior Warmth
Throughout the long side of the “L,” views are framed of the iconic Sheep Mountain, also known as Sleeping Indian. The exterior of the buildings is defined by a palette of dark-stained cedar, steel, and board-formed concrete. Inside, white oak and polished concrete floors, custom steel, and walnut millwork create a grounded, earthy sense of warmth.
Sustainable Land Restoration
The land restoration involved adding new topsoil and native seeding, while a newly planted bosque of aspen trees introduces shade and a sense of placemaking. This legacy project not only allows the owners to reconnect with their equestrian roots but also brings the historic ranch into a sustainable future, honoring its past while embracing modern living.
